After the convoy entered Tear Knight City, a Recorder from the Governor's Mansion and a Legion protocol officer were already waiting inside the city gates.
The two approached with their attendants, first saluting Lorenhill according to Holy City protocol, then presenting the arrangements the Governor's Mansion had prepared for his arrival.
"Lord Lorenhill, His Excellency the Governor is still recovering. He will formally receive you at the Governor's Mansion this evening."
"Your quarters are ready. Legion personnel will also see to your entourage and vehicles."
Lorenhill accepted the document outlining the arrangements and gave it a quick read.
Yasol had not come to welcome him in person, which was entirely consistent with Lorenhill's understanding of the governor.
Lorenhill had become a candidate for succession and secured the Holy War Council's recognition. Yasol needed to accord him the proper courtesies so that every faction in Tear Knight would acknowledge his candidacy.
But the succession still required further deliberation.
Until the outcome was settled, the governor could not show any candidate personal favor. The Legion, Clerics, and local lords would all interpret it as an explicit endorsement.
That would influence their judgments and might render the assessment meaningless before it even began.
So Yasol had sent the Governor's Mansion's Recorder and the Legion protocol officer to receive him with full formal honors, while remaining at the Governor's Mansion himself to await their evening meeting.
His status was acknowledged, while personal preferences were subordinated to protocol.
