Ch. 21Demon Traces
Key plot points and events
- Head Constable Yang Xiao rides to Li Family Hamlet with four young Yamen Runners: Zhao Tieniu, Sun Ming, Zhou Qiang, and Zhou Gang. They trust his abilities after a previous patrol.
- The village has suffered three months of disappearances. At first livestock went missing; later, fifteen villagers vanished without signs of struggle or bodies.
- Constable Li Tie, exhausted from overseeing patrols and night watches, briefs Yang Xiao at the Runner Guardroom. No one has found a clear clue, though the disappearances suggest a Demon.
- Li Tie shows Yang Xiao the village: most missing villagers lived in the east, livestock first disappeared in the west, and the north borders a mountain forest. Yang Xiao suspects the Demon may already be hiding inside the village.
- As dusk falls, Li Tie invites the group to eat. Yang Xiao detects a faint trace of Demonic Qi.
Character development and interactions
- Yang Xiao is practical and alert: he presses Li Tie for details, studies the village layout, and quietly considers that the threat may be within the settlement.
- The four young Runners’ confidence in Yang Xiao is clear; they accompany him willingly. Sun Ming openly disparages Li Tie for failing to solve the case.
- Li Tie appears welcoming and cooperative, but his fatigue and the village’s unsettling atmosphere leave the situation uncertain. He guides Yang Xiao around the area and offers him a meal.
Significant themes
- Suspicion and hidden danger: The apparently ordinary village feels unnaturally numb, and the Demon may be concealed among its residents.
- Duty under pressure: Li Tie’s prolonged effort to protect the village has worn him down, while Yang Xiao takes over the investigation.
- The limits of appearances: There are no visible clues to the disappearances, and the first concrete lead is an unseen trace of Demonic Qi.
