Background / History
Sabo was born to Outlook III’s noble family in the Goa Kingdom. Disgusted by the corrupt nobility and longing for freedom, he ran away from home. He met Ace and Luffy, and the three became sworn brothers 106 328.
When Sabo first sailed out to sea, Celestial Dragons attacked him. Dragon rescued him, but he awakened without his childhood memories. He subsequently grew up within the Revolutionary Army, training under Dragon and other teachers alongside Koala 106 113 162.
Ace and Luffy believed Sabo had died. His intention to set sail at seventeen became a promise they carried forward, with both choosing the same departure age in his memory 197 330.
Appearance
Sabo is a blond young man with a burn scar near one eye 197 407.
- Clothing: Blue formalwear and a hat fitted with goggles 327.
- Weapon: Frequently carries a pipe, recognizable enough to help Ace identify him at Marineford 111 485.
Personality
Sabo is sociable and persistent, repeatedly attempting to befriend Lin Mo despite receiving cold responses. He also recognizes boundaries: before trying to rescue Ivankov and Inazuma, he asks Lin Mo to relay a message rather than pressure him into fighting 110 111 252.
His loyalty can override his usual judgment. He defies Dragon’s warnings to pursue Lin Mo and rushes toward Marineford without consultation when he learns of Ace’s execution. Nevertheless, he accepts retreat when a rescue becomes impossible and prevents weaker comrades from joining battles they cannot survive 111 258 438 484.
Sabo is observant and difficult to deceive indefinitely. Once the unexplained mask catches his attention, he questions comrades, retraces his first mission, and investigates the possibility that someone deliberately removed his memories 408 411 416. He values those memories even when recovering them may be painful 461 483.
His everyday behavior is more playful: he enjoys snacks, sneaks food from the kitchen at night, and joins Enel in a drinking contest for free barbecue. Romance, however, leaves him unusually uncertain and easily embarrassed 162 289 421 665 666.
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu and Pipe Combat
- Combines pipe strikes with punches, kicks, aerial flips, and rapid evasive movement 157.
- Dodges Enel’s Lightning Strikes and redirects a pursuing Thunder Dragon into a boulder 157.
- Regularly pushes Kaku to the point that he can barely counterattack during hand-to-hand sparring 162.
- Attributes his strength to talent and instruction from several excellent teachers 162.
Armament Haki
- Coats his hands to strike Enel’s elemental body 157.
- Reinforces his pipe to block attacks and deflect some of Kizaru’s light bullets 438 485.
- Does not make him immune to electricity: crushing Enel’s electrified staff still shocks him 157.
- Cannot fully withstand Admiral-level force; Akainu breaks his reinforced pipe and sends him flying 488.
Dragon Claw
A specialized martial art using tremendous finger and grip strength, strengthened by Armament Haki 389.
- Crushes Enel’s Golden Staff with one grip 157.
- Can crush steel swords and helmets, but struggles against the unusually resistant ice pillar on Snow Island 389.
- Breaks through a ship’s floor to escape an unexpected attack from Kizaru 666.
Dragon’s Breath
- Strikes the ground to spread destructive force through the surrounding terrain 437.
- Shatters a beach and raises a large cloud of smoke, sand, and stones to obscure Kizaru’s vision 437.
- Provides cover for repeated attacks, but does not overcome Kizaru’s sensing and light-speed evasion 437 438.
Tactical Judgment and Endurance
- Scouts Ivankov and Inazuma’s escort route before attempting their rescue 111.
- Deliberately reduces his resistance to Kizaru’s kick so its force launches him toward Ace’s execution platform 485.
- Continues resisting Kizaru for more than half an hour despite broken bones and repeated wounds 438.
- Investigates an apparently sleeping Marine crew before allowing Lin MuMu to attack, correctly recognizing that something is wrong 666.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pipe weapon — His signature melee weapon. Lin MuMu takes an early pipe as payment for rescuing him; he later obtains a replacement. Another pipe breaks while blocking Akainu at Marineford 112 156 488.
- Mask — A keepsake tied to his first Sabaody mission and forgotten connection with Lin MuMu. He insists on recovering the original when it falls into the sea rather than accepting a replacement 411 460 461.
- Den Den Mushi — Used to contact Dragon, report failed missions, and announce the return of his childhood memories 111 278.
Relationships
- Ace — Sworn brother. Ace initially believes him dead; they reunite during the Paramount War and fight together to escape 106 197 485 486.
- Luffy — Sworn younger brother. Sabo protects him from the Admirals and later knocks him unconscious to prevent him from approaching the rampaging Lin Mo 486 488 490.
- Dragon — Rescuer, teacher, and leader. Sabo respects his guidance but disobeys him when personal loyalty demands action; Dragon also supports his search for erased memories 106 258 483.
- Koala — Childhood companion, fellow Revolutionary, and training partner. She worries over his injuries and recklessness. Sabo describes them as friends and comrades when Lin MuMu predicts they will marry 113 394 411 503.
- Lin Mo — Friend and benefactor. Sabo repeatedly offers help, joins efforts to rescue him from Impel Down, and continues to consider him a friend despite Lin Mo’s dismissiveness 113 252 273 501.
- Lin MuMu — Rescuer, traveling companion, and eventual romantic partner. Their relationship survives false identities, erased memories, and repeated sacrifices for one another 112 439 461 665 666.
- Garp — A familiar adult from his childhood with Ace and Luffy. Garp helps him reach Lin Mo in Impel Down, embraces him after learning he survived, and unsuccessfully encourages him to become a Marine 277 280 283.
- Ivankov and Inazuma — Revolutionary comrades. Sabo risks capture trying to rescue them; they later cooperate in moving Lin Mo to Impel Down’s Level 5.5 111 277.
- Kaku and Enel — Sparring partners and allies associated with Lin Mo. Sabo trains with Kaku, shares a disastrous drinking contest with Enel, and later helps rescue the amnesiac Enel 157 162 666.
- Kizaru — Recurring opponent who repeatedly outmatches him. Their encounters force Sabo to rely on endurance, diversions, and rescue priorities rather than direct victory 111 438 485.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Sabaody Mission
- Sabo accompanies Ivankov and other Revolutionaries to free captured comrades. After the initial rescue succeeds, Ivankov and Inazuma are themselves captured 111.
- He attempts to free them from a Marine escort but encounters Kizaru. Lin Mo’s disguised Shadow Clone rescues him using Flash Step 111.
- The clone claims to be Lin MuMu, Lin Mo’s twin sister, and distracts Kizaru. Finding his charred pipe afterward, Sabo believes she died protecting him 112.
- Lin Mo tells him MuMu survived but forbids another meeting. Relieved, Sabo promises to help both supposed siblings whenever they need him 113.
Baltigo and the East Blue
- During Lin Mo’s visit to Baltigo, Sabo spars with Enel and repeatedly asks about MuMu. Lin Mo eventually claims she died and that her ashes were scattered near Foosha Village 157 158.
- Lin Mo deliberately mentions Foosha Village as a possible trigger for Sabo’s lost memories. Sabo requests assignment to a future East Blue mission rather than abandon the Army’s immediate needs 158.
- Traveling with Koala, Sabo passes Ace at sea. Both feel an unexplained reaction, but neither recognizes the other 197.
- Sabo reaches Foosha Village carrying white lilacs and goes ashore alone 197.
- On a later liberation mission, he helps a rescued woman seeking Lin Mo, whom she identifies as her missing son. Dragon agrees to bring her and her daughter to Baltigo 234.
Impel Down and Childhood Memory Recovery
- Sabo pursues Lin Mo after seeing him leave Punk Hazard aboard a Marine battleship. Tsuru allows him aboard, where he offers assistance and asks to speak privately 252.
- After news of Lin Mo’s predicament spreads, Sabo insists he will rescue him as a friend, despite Dragon’s warning about the political consequences 258.
- He becomes lost at sea, catches a ride with Kaku, and enters Impel Down disguised as a Marine. Garp quietly helps him reach Lin Mo 273 276 277.
- Sabo cooperates with MuMu, Ivankov, and Inazuma to carry Lin Mo to Level 5.5 277.
- MuMu’s mention of Ace and Luffy restores his childhood memories. He immediately calls Dragon, then identifies himself to Garp 278 280.
- He explicitly reassures his Revolutionary comrades that recovering his past will not make him leave the Army 280 327.
Snow Island and Selective Amnesia
- Sabo follows MuMu when she pursues someone resembling Lin Mo. Both fall into an ice cavern; he shields her during the descent and gives her his coat despite the risk to himself 389 390.
- After recovering from severe frostbite, he cannot remember how he entered the cavern and senses that something important is missing 394 400.
- His unexplained attachment to a mask drives him back to Sabaody. Perona remembers his closeness with MuMu, while Rayleigh suggests deliberate memory removal 411 416.
- Learning that MuMu received the Memo-Memo Fruit gives him a likely explanation, prompting a renewed search for her 416 417.
Protecting MuMu and Reconciliation
- When Kizaru attempts to capture MuMu, Sabo shields her, rescues her from the sea, and accepts a challenge to land a hit within an hour 437.
- Kizaru severely injures him. MuMu returns to surrender in exchange for his safety, then takes a beam meant for him 438.
- After Kizaru throws her into the sea, Sabo endures another attack to reach her. He brings her ashore, clears seawater from her lungs, and collapses once she resumes breathing 439.
- MuMu later admits she erased every memory involving herself. Sabo forgives her, accepts her promise not to repeat it, and asks for his memories back if restoration becomes possible 460 461.
- In a later flashback, he asks Dragon to investigate restoration despite the possibility of painful memories 483.
Paramount War
- News of Ace’s execution sends Sabo rushing to Marineford. He fights Kizaru, advances toward the execution platform, and asks Ivankov to protect Luffy rather than assist him 484 485.
- Once Ace is freed, Sabo explains his survival and amnesia. The three brothers embrace and fight through the Marines together 486.
- He protects Luffy from Akainu, losing his pipe in the clash 488.
- When Lin Mo loses control following a crewmate’s death, Sabo is wounded trying to stop him. He knocks Luffy unconscious and entrusts him to Hancock before attempting to help Lin Mo himself 490 491.
- Rayleigh pulls Sabo and MuMu clear before Lin Mo’s explosion devastates Marineford 498.
Postwar Journey and Romance
- Sabo accompanies MuMu to search for the missing Lin Mo, temporarily separating from his newly reunited brothers 498.
- At Water 7, MuMu reveals that she knows possible futures. Her prediction that Sabo will marry Koala leaves him incredulous; he insists Koala is his friend and comrade 503.
- MuMu later loses the Memo-Memo Fruit, returning the memories she removed to their owners 534 536.
- Sabo continues helping her without demanding repayment and insists on a medical examination when she experiences heart pain 663.
- Their romantic misunderstanding is addressed directly: he explains that he never wanted her to honor a life-saving promise against her wishes. Their relationship is openly acknowledged afterward 665 666.
- Together with Karasu, they rescue Enel and expose a memory-eating seahorse. Sabo also ensures the boy controlled by the creature is taken to an inhabited island rather than abandoned 666.
Alternate-World Dressrosa
These events concern the alternate-world Sabo, distinct from the Sabo whose memories returned in Impel Down.
- In this world, Ace died protecting Luffy. Sabo recovered his childhood memories upon reading the news and remained unconscious from the shock for three days 669.
- Sabo reunites with Luffy at the Corrida Colosseum and takes his place in the Flame-Flame Fruit tournament 679.
- The visiting Ace, disguised as Saito, withdraws and entrusts the fruit to him without revealing his identity. Sabo wins the competition; the provided account states his intention to eat the fruit but does not depict its consumption 679.
- He later joins the gathering aboard the Thousand Sunny and requests a match against the disguised Ace 680.
