Son Gohan scratched his head awkwardly. He felt too embarrassed to turn down her kindness.
"Come with me."
"We're all living in a hidden basement now."
Mai quickened her pace as she spoke.
The two exchanged a glance, then followed her.
A little later, they watched Mai lift a manhole cover. They climbed down and wound their way through the fairly clean sewers.
Then, without warning, the way ahead lit up, revealing a broad open space.
"Whoa!"
Trunks stared, his mouth hanging open.
Rows of beds stood beneath the lights. The people bustling among them all turned to look.
"Mai!"
Ashu called out happily.
"I ran into these two."
Mai smiled.
"There are more survivors?"
"That's wonderful."
Ashu sounded delighted too.
Son Gohan and Trunks looked around the spacious room at the faces, some young and some old. Smiles spread across their own faces.
"There are so many people here!"
Mai smiled too. "There are!"
"I met them while I was out and brought them back here."
"With the Artificial Humans roaming aboveground, we have no choice but to hide down here."
At her words, Son Gohan's expression changed. He clenched his fists.
"I'll defeat them. Then everyone can live aboveground again!"
Trunks gritted his teeth. "Me too!"
Mai took one look at them and laughed. "You two? You'd better stay hidden."
"If those vicious Artificial Humans find us..."
Her face grew sorrowful.
"All we can do is run as hard as we can!"
Son Gohan and Trunks said nothing, but the resolve in their eyes was unmistakable.
After that, the two of them met everyone in the underground base.
"Besides Gohan, my mom and Xia Le are still out there."
"We still hope you'll all come with us."
"Gohan, Xia Le and I will protect everyone."
Trunks spoke earnestly.
