Ch. 81A Conversation!
Key events
- Fukaboshi returns from finding Vander Decken dead—exactly where Dongze predicted—and rushes back to Ryugu Palace, fearing what Dongze might do. Instead, he finds Dongze and Neptune drinking together.
- Over drinks, Dongze tells Neptune that he killed Arlong’s crew in the East Blue, challenges Neptune’s account of what he knew about them, and reveals that Hody Jones helped cause Queen Otohime’s death. He also warns that Fish-Man Island will need strength to secure its freedom, criticizing Otohime’s faith in gaining independence through persuasion alone.
- Dongze says he came to investigate history and meet Shirahoshi. He identifies her as Poseidon and argues that she should see the world and develop the judgment and resolve needed to bear responsibility for the island.
- Dongze admits Neptune summoned Whitebeard. After sobering himself by forcing the alcohol from his body, he leaves to visit Shirahoshi.
- In the Hard-Shell Tower, Robin has befriended Shirahoshi and told her that Vander Decken is gone. When Dongze arrives, Shirahoshi panics: she has dreamed that he brings disaster to Fish-Man Island and kills many people. Dongze decides to use the Voice of All Things to speak with her.
Character developments and interactions
- Fukaboshi shifts from alarm at Dongze’s power to anxiety that his father may provoke him. He is stunned to find Neptune drinking comfortably with Dongze.
- Neptune moves from drunken banter to serious concern as Dongze exposes painful information about Otohime’s death and Fish-Man Island’s vulnerability. He recognizes Dongze’s strength and considers the limits of Otohime’s approach, while admitting he called Whitebeard to protect his family.
- Dongze shows both formidable power and political bluntness. Though he reassures Neptune through his actions and words, he is unsettled by Shirahoshi’s vision and the possibility that her ability lets her foresee disaster.
- Robin has gained Shirahoshi’s trust by keeping her company and sharing news of the outside world. Shirahoshi, however, reacts to Dongze with immediate fear, making their first meeting a difficult one.
Significant themes
- Strength and independence: Dongze argues that moral appeals alone cannot protect Fish-Man Island in a world controlled by powerful oppressors.
- The burden of leadership: Shirahoshi must gain experience and resolve if she is to shoulder her island’s future as Poseidon.
- Power and trust: Dongze’s overwhelming abilities make him both a potential protector and a source of fear—especially after Shirahoshi’s ominous vision.
- Hidden truths and political responsibility: Revelations about Otohime’s death and Neptune’s alliance with Whitebeard complicate the kingdom’s history and security.
