In a place that counted as no more than a provincial city in that country, a struggle unfolded unbeknownst to the world.
Yet the pressure concealed within that struggle was staggering. The conflict surrounding the miracle known as the Holy Grail could rightly be called a war.
The Holy Grail. A miracle both unique and infinite.
It was legend.
It was a remnant of the age of gods.
It was the end.
It was hope—even if pursuing it was proof of despair.
In that struggle, the miracle called the Holy Grail was said to manifest as a "wish-granting machine capable of fulfilling any desire."
When the war to claim that Holy Grail began, the wish-granting machine called the Holy Grail did not yet exist. What manifested before it were seven souls.
Heroic souls selected through all manner of mediums from the entirety of history, legend, curses, and fiction born on this planet—not necessarily—manifested in the present world as beings known as Servants.
They were both the backbone of the Holy Grail War and an absolute prerequisite for the Holy Grail's manifestation. Powerful souls beyond human comparison were summoned to destroy one another. During the Holy Grail War, the souls of the seven dead Servants would flow into the Lesser Grail. Only once the vessel was filled would the wish-granting machine be complete.
