As he was now, Oniki no longer even qualified to compare himself to him.

To close the gap between them, he had to become stronger.

His starter Pokémon, Raticate, was already struggling to keep up with him.

The best solution was to catch a new Pokémon with greater potential.

The people who would normally be busy in the fields had already returned to their homes.
