Background / History

Orphanage upbringing and first journey

Bai Shi lived in the Pokémon world for more than ten years before beginning his Trainer career. Raised in Twinleaf Town’s orphanage, he lacked both formal Pokémon schooling and the money to obtain a starter from Professor Rowan or buy an egg. After coming of age, he supported himself through work for Suzuki 1 8 52.

He initially chose to seek a wild Pokémon in the northern forest, preparing improvised armor and researching safer routes. Paul’s gift of Starly ultimately gave him his first partner. Bai Shi trained both Starly and his own physical fitness, then worked guarding Suzuki’s orchard before leaving Twinleaf Town 1 5 10 12.

Before departing, he arranged a Shroomish for his childhood friend Ishimaru, choosing an inexpensive Pokémon whose evolution suited Ishimaru’s interest in Fighting-types. His first destination was Sandgem Town 12.

Sinnoh training and rivalry with Paul

Bai Shi’s early travels combined training with the need to earn food and travel money. After finishing runner-up in a local tournament, he stayed in Sandgem Town to rebuild Staravia’s confidence. Later rewards allowed him to buy detailed reference books and replace improvised training with researched, Ability-based plans 26 31.

Using online reports about Ash, he located his travels within the events he remembered from the anime. He headed toward Hearthome City hoping to obtain Chimchar before Ash and to face Paul again. Team Rocket’s interference cost him that opportunity, although he later took comfort in hearing that Chimchar was thriving with Ash 32 71.

He won Hearthome’s Double Battle Tournament with Dawn, but a later defeat by Paul exposed the gap between their teams. Staravia evolved into Staraptor during that rematch without overturning the result 52 62 79 81.

Establishing a home

Gemstone sales gave Bai Shi enough money to purchase a manor near Lake Verity. He chose Twinleaf Town for its personal significance and because property there offered far more land than an apartment in Jubilife City 88 98 102.

He renovated the property, donated Pokémon books to his former orphanage, and continued training at home. He also brought an Ariados colony under his protection, curbed its attacks on passersby, and trained it to defend the estate 98 103 109 110.

After winning the Twinleaf Festival tournament, his loss to Palmer motivated a trip to Kalos for Mega Evolution. By this point, he had become less interested in taking exceptional Pokémon intended for Ash and more satisfied with raising his own partners 130 131 132.

Unova and the Vertress Conference

In Unova, Bai Shi developed a second, mixed-type lineup alongside his established Normal-type team. He earned Battle Club Special Membership, won Don George’s tournament, and collected eight Gym Badges before entering the Vertress Conference 168 188 221.

His conference victory brought widespread recognition and constant challenges that disrupted his training. He withdrew to a secluded location to prepare Mega Manectric for Marshal. Although he lost their closely contested match, he accepted the result calmly and used it to revise his tactics 257 258 265.

His subsequent travels included helping Keldeo and the Swords of Justice, visiting Blueberry Academy, and defeating Kieran. He declined Cyrano’s offer to enroll, preferring to return to Sinnoh and continue exploring 280 288.

Alola, Kalos, and later life

Bai Shi returned home with nearly twenty Pokémon and expanded the manor’s farming and training facilities. He began experimentally cultivating Revival Herbs with help from Excadrill, Stantler, and Pokémon capable of using Rain Dance 289 290.

In Alola, he defeated Hala, collected ten Z-Crystals, and helped Cubchoo evolve into Beartic. News of the Lumiose Conference then prompted him to return to Kalos because he expected Team Flare’s attack to follow the tournament 302 313 319.

He planned an infiltration of Prism Tower and rescued the imprisoned Zygarde Core, Z2. During the wider crisis, Stantler evolved into Wyrdeer while fighting the Giant Rock 320 326 329.

Afterward, Bai Shi settled back into life at the manor, granted Wyrdeer a reprieve from ordinary battles, and helped suitable orphanage children become Trainers. The final chapter ends with his reunion and an unfinished rematch with Paul: Staraptor faces Electivire 331 334.

Appearance

  • Initial wilderness clothing: Camouflage, a yellow construction helmet, clear goggles, black gloves, and wooden boards strapped over his chest and back 1.
  • Travel footwear: Running shoes matching those worn by Ash in Pokémon Journeys 12.
  • Cold-weather clothing: A thick padded coat prepared for Snowpoint City 113.
  • Battle accessories: A Key Stone Bracelet and, later, a Z-Ring 62 302.

Personality

Bai Shi is cautious, financially practical, and reluctant to waste his Pokémon’s strength on unnecessary battles. Ishimaru observes that he often understates his chances even when confident of winning. However, his caution does not prevent him from rescuing people or vulnerable Pokémon 5 14 175 296.

He regularly reviews losses and changes his methods. When impatience causes him to mishandle an attempted Ursaring capture, he explicitly recognizes the problem. When Litleo struggles with Flamethrower, he admits that he pushed it too quickly and returns to foundational training 43 149.

His generosity is directed toward both companions and the community that raised him. He gives Ishimaru Pokémon and equipment, supports the orphanage, and rewards his team with meals, massages, and rest. He also credits his Pokémon rather than treating victories as his achievement alone 12 98 152 257 289.

Bai Shi can be vindictive when provoked, particularly toward Team Rocket over Chimchar and toward Barry’s rudeness. Over time, he becomes more accepting of his Pokémon’s preferences, allowing reluctant battlers such as Wyrdeer to rest while continuing to train those who enjoy competition 67 71 331 334.

Abilities & Skills

Pokémon Training

  • Creates individual plans based on temperament, natural movement, Abilities, and observed weaknesses 31 66 104.
  • Uses carefully matched opponents to develop confidence, first with Dunsparce and later with Palpitoad 20 229.
  • Adapts Buneary’s Agility training to its jumping power rather than forcing it to run 66.
  • Recognizes overtraining and provides recovery periods or easier foundational exercises 139 149 188.

High-Speed Battle Techniques

  • Makes Agility-based combinations a foundation of his battle style 62.
  • Develops high-speed versions of Aerial Ace, Wing Attack, Crush Claw, Focus Punch, and High Jump Kick 49 130 151.
  • High-Speed Crush Claw requires buildup time and distance, making it less effective once opponents anticipate it 116.

Custom Techniques

  • Heavenly Frost Fist: Helps Zangoose extend Ice Punch into a ranged strike reaching roughly one meter and coating targets in frost; then applies the concept to Fire Punch and Thunder Punch 104.
  • Electric Domain: Combines gathered Electric-type energy with Manectric’s Charge and Lightning Rod to amplify an attack. Its early version needs to recharge after one enhanced move 168.
  • Spinning defense: Adapts Ash’s Counter Shield idea into a spinning Crush Claw defense for Zangoose 131.

Battle Strategy

  • Exploits recoil windows, including Empoleon’s Hyper Beam and Rhyperior’s Rock Wrecker 130 131.
  • Uses Dig to bypass Monferno’s Counter Shield and Taunt to stop Chandelure’s Pain Split 130 238.
  • Disrupts opposing lineups with Roar and links Seismitoad’s Rain Dance to Manectric’s Thunder 180 294.
  • Builds both a Normal-type lineup for individual battles and a mixed-type Rain Team 188.

Foreknowledge

  • Retains knowledge of the Pokémon anime and fan fiction, using it for training ideas and travel planning 8 32.

  • Recognizes that major intervention can change outcomes; he cannot assume every remembered event will occur unchanged 92 154.

Check-In System

  • Activates check-ins mentally to receive items that appear before him 92.
  • Rewards include supplies, transport, evolution stones, Key Stone Bracelets, and Manectric’s Mega Stone 12 40 152 257.
  • Cannot reliably obtain the reward he wants: requests for a Mega Stone can instead yield unrelated items such as a Team Rocket uniform 62.

Farming and Mentorship

  • Coordinates Rototiller, Grassy Terrain, Rain Dance, and fertilizer to improve the manor’s crops 289 290.
  • Cultivates Revival Herbs in a monitored plot before considering larger-scale production 289.
  • Shares training knowledge with Ishimaru, orphanage children, and Alola Pokémon School students 102 152 302 303.
