Ch. 261The prodigies of every prefecture, an age of great contention

Plot points and events

  • Prodigies and veteran Foundation Establishment cultivators from Qingzhou’s thirty-six prefectures gather at the Garden of Heroes for the Purple Register Heavenly Examination. Tension runs high between aging cultivators risking everything for a final chance at advancement and young elites confident that the contest belongs to them.
  • Chu Bai spends two days in seclusion, strengthening his fortune golden body and glazed flawless bones while preparing for the Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm, a secret realm notorious for its extreme danger and more than 95% death rate.
  • While surveying the crowded hall with his divine sense, Chu Bai notices three exceptional Violet Ordination Ascension Token holders whose presence keeps the other cultivators at a distance: martial cultivator Lin Tingfeng, ice-and-water cultivator Su Qinghan, and array and divine-soul expert Gu Yuan.
  • Gu Yuan detects Chu Bai’s concealed divine sense and invites him to join them. Chu Bai enters the hall, where his battle-forged authority impresses the gathered cultivators and draws the trio’s attention.
  • After they exchange introductions and discuss their records, all four agree to enter dangerous large secret realms rather than safer, lower-reward ones. Chu Bai names the Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm as his choice, impressing the others with his resolve.
  • The four share tea and pledge mutual respect as kindred spirits, while openly acknowledging that once the examination begins, they will fight without mercy for the Purple Abode Dao and the ten Violet Ordinations.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai shifts from his role as a commander and protector back into a ruthless Dao-seeker. He remains composed and humble about his battlefield achievements, but reveals a bold appetite for danger and competition. His aura alone commands respect.
  • Lin Tingfeng is a forthright, battle-hungry body cultivator. He immediately recognizes Chu Bai’s exceptional physique and eagerly looks forward to testing himself against him.
  • Su Qinghan is cool, perceptive, and resolute. She recognizes Chu Bai from reports of his victory over a Demon King and respects his service and leadership.
  • Gu Yuan appears mild and scholarly but possesses extraordinary perception and a formidable divine soul. He initiates the meeting and frames the competition as both a personal struggle and a matter of responsibility to their prefectures.
  • The four establish mutual admiration and camaraderie without disguising the rivalry ahead. Their conversation makes clear that friendship will not soften their resolve in the secret realms.

Significant themes

  • Generational conflict and desperation: Older cultivators see the examination as their last chance, while young prodigies treat it as a proving ground.
  • Risk and ambition: The strongest candidates willingly choose near-lethal trials because great advancement demands confronting danger.
  • Respect amid rivalry: The four can recognize one another’s strength and share a genuine bond even as they prepare to become enemies.
  • Duty and the Dao: Chu Bai’s authority comes not only from power but from protecting the people under his command; the examination is also tied to the fortunes of their prefectures and the dynasty.

Ch. 262Entering the Boundary Gate, the Heavenly Examination begins

Plot points and events

  • The Qingzhou Purple Register Heavenly Examination begins. More than three hundred elite Foundation Establishment cultivators march to the Examination Prefecture’s Heaven-Opening Plaza, where the Boundary Gate connects to shattered worlds.
  • Chief examiner Shen Canghai explains the rules: candidates have three months to earn merit by refining world origins and killing demons or other evil beings. Only the top ten gain violet ordination, and the exam’s death rate exceeds seventy percent.
  • After a ritual invokes Great Zhou’s law net—which records candidates’ contributions—the thirty-six prefecture champions with Violet Ordination Ascension Tokens receive first choice of secret realms.
  • Most choose dangerous but manageable worlds suited to their abilities. When his turn comes, Chu Bai ignores safer options and chooses the forbidden Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm, where the law net barely reaches and native Purple Abode demons may dwell.
  • Shen Canghai warns Chu Bai that the choice could mean certain death and offers him a chance to reconsider. Chu Bai refuses, declaring that a war requires taking the most perilous ground and fighting the fiercest enemies.
  • Chu Bai plunges into the Boundary Gate. The remaining candidates are assigned to other realms, and the examination turns into a struggle for survival.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates boldness, conviction, and a commander’s willingness to accept extreme risks. Despite the crowd’s scorn and Shen Canghai’s pressure, he remains composed and unwavering.
  • Shen Canghai, initially detached, gives Chu Bai an unusually personal warning. Chu Bai’s defiance unsettles him, and he later acknowledges the young man as a “mad dragon.”
  • Gu Yuan sees strategic purpose in Chu Bai’s choice, reasoning that the absence of the law net’s restraints might suit a battle-hardened commander.
  • Lin Tingfeng admires Chu Bai’s courage and vows to yield him the title of Qingzhou’s foremost Foundation Establishment cultivator if he survives.
  • Su Qinghan is shocked; she had thought Chu Bai’s earlier mention of the Heavenly Abyss was a joke.
  • The other candidates react with envy, contempt, or horror, while the prefecture champions’ confidence in safer choices contrasts with Chu Bai’s gamble.

Significant themes

  • Courage versus recklessness: Chu Bai’s decision appears suicidal to others, but he frames it as a deliberate act of duty and ambition.
  • Merit, power, and political privilege: The examination rewards service to Great Zhou, while Ascension Token holders enjoy priority over ordinary candidates.
  • War and survival: The exam is presented not as a contest but as a deadly campaign, where candidates must seize opportunity at the risk of their lives.
  • Fate and defiance: Chu Bai refuses to let danger—or even the authority of a Purple Abode master—change his chosen path.

Ch. 263Eyes Opened upon the Heavenly Abyss, Ancient Writing on a Broken Stele

  • Arrival and revelation: Chu Bai survives the brutal passage through the Realm Gate, protected by his unusually strong physique and cultivation. He checks his sea of consciousness and confirms that a faint Anchor connects him to the Great Zhou Dynasty. He realizes the Purple Register Heavenly Examination is not merely a contest: its candidates are planted as waymarks so the dynasty can eventually invade and absorb the fragment realms they explore. Gaining violet ordination therefore means helping expand the empire at other worlds’ expense. Rather than weakening his resolve, this truth clarifies and hardens his dao heart.
  • Adapting to the Heavenly Abyss: The realm is a silent, barren wasteland beneath purple clouds and two blood-red moons. Its spiritual energy is exceptionally dense but violently corrupted, dangerous to orthodox cultivators. Chu Bai’s Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture can crush and assimilate the foreign energies, turning the hostile environment into a resource. He nevertheless proceeds cautiously, concealing his aura and using tightly controlled divine sense instead of broadcasting his presence.
  • Signs of danger: Chu Bai detects recent traces of killing intent and follows them to a gorge. There he finds enormous claw marks and corrosive purple blood, evidence of a creature powerful enough to rival or exceed a formidable body cultivator. He takes the warning seriously and continues stealthily into the gorge.
  • The broken stele: Among volcanic ash, Chu Bai discovers half of an ancient, battered stele covered in unfamiliar runes. Though he cannot read them, he senses overwhelming resentment, despair, and hatred within the carvings. When he cautiously touches a central rune, a remnant of divine sense pierces his defenses and enters his consciousness. Chu Bai’s golden protective presence prepares to destroy it, but the remnant instead explodes into a vivid blood-colored vision and an ancient roar—ending the chapter on a cliffhanger.
Character development and interactions: Chu Bai is shown as tough, observant, and disciplined: he survives the crossing, interprets the dynasty’s true motives, and adapts to the realm without mistaking opportunity for safety. His only direct interaction is with the stele’s ancient remnant, which responds to his touch with a mysterious vision.
Significant themes: The chapter explores imperial expansion and the moral cost of cultivation, survival through knowledge and restraint, and the power of ancient hatred to endure across ages.

Ch. 264A world-ending war, the Heaven-Burying Abyss

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai touches the ancient tablet’s central rune, awakening it and unleashing a flood of deathly resentment that drags his consciousness into a vision.
  • He witnesses the history of the realm: it was once part of a vast, flourishing world, destroyed by an invasion and catastrophic war. The world shattered into countless fragments, including the Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm.
  • The vision reveals that the tablet was a damaged world-anchoring treasure, marked by the dying curses of the world’s fallen inhabitants.
  • Chu Bai returns to the gorge, but the resentment remains bound to his divine soul. His Fortune Golden Body and the people’s faith shield him from possession, though they cannot cleanse the contamination.
  • The resentment provokes violent impulses, which Chu Bai suppresses with pain and the Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture’s stabilizing true intent.
  • He deciphers fragments of the tablet’s message: the Myriad Laws Divine Hall sank into the Heaven-Burying Abyss, and something there was sealed.
  • Believing the Abyss may contain a means to purify the resentment—and a chance for immense merit—Chu Bai decides to travel there rather than limit himself to the safer objectives of the examination. He leaves the gorge concealed and wary.

Character developments

  • Chu Bai moves from shock and physical distress to focused analysis. He recognizes the danger of his contamination but does not give in to panic.
  • He shows strong discipline by resisting the bloodlust and choosing a risky course based on the information he has gained.
  • His ambition grows: he aims not only to survive or complete routine tasks, but to reach the realm’s central ruins and claim a potentially exceptional reward.

Significant themes

  • Danger and opportunity: The tablet’s curse threatens Chu Bai, yet its vision and inscription also reveal a path forward.
  • The cost of ancient catastrophe: The world’s destruction persists through the resentment of its dead, turning history into an active danger.
  • Self-control against corruption: Chu Bai’s survival depends on maintaining command of his emotions and mind.
  • Ambition and risk: He willingly pursues a perilous destination in hopes of both cleansing himself and achieving extraordinary merit.

Character interactions

  • There are no direct conversations with other living characters. Chu Bai’s key interactions are with the tablet and the ancient dead whose curses assault him.
  • His Fortune Golden Body and its Golden Dragon phantom protect his consciousness, while the accumulated faith and vows of Great Zhou’s people help preserve his clarity.

Ch. 265Entangled in Karma, Origin Spell Power

Chapter Summary

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai travels north through the desolate Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm, finding ruined structures, barren land, and fragile space. He recognizes that a powerful battle could make the already-damaged realm collapse again.
  • A sudden gray fog suppresses his Divine Sense, and three Foundation Establishment Middle Stage Strange Creatures attack: a three-headed beast, a bone-armed mantis, and a mass of corrosive flesh.
  • Chu Bai kills them effortlessly—cutting the mantis apart with Geng Metal Sword Qi, destroying the beast with Bing Fire Divine Thunder, and crushing the flesh creature underfoot.
  • The creatures’ deaths release ancient resentment that merges with the resentment Chu Bai had already acquired from a broken stele. It nearly overwhelms his mind, but his Fate Destiny, General Star Destiny: “Slaughter at Your Side,” activates.
  • His Fate Destiny refines the resentment into black-purple Killing Intent, which fuses with his Spell Power and dramatically enhances his attacks. His new Sword Qi corrodes a massive boulder until it melts away.
  • Chu Bai realizes this power comes with a serious cost: the lingering memories and emotions in the resentment could eventually corrupt him into a mindless killer. He resolves to use it only when necessary, not to seek strength through indiscriminate slaughter.
  • He searches the creatures’ fragmented memories and learns of three dangers: a lethal Deathless Poison Marsh to the north, a large Strange Creature colony to the east, and a safer canyon passage between them. He takes the canyon route toward the realm’s depths and the Myriad Laws Divine Hall.

Character development

  • Chu Bai demonstrates overwhelming combat ability and composure, defeating three dangerous enemies without resorting to his strongest techniques.
  • His newfound Killing Intent offers a major increase in power, but he shows discipline and self-awareness by recognizing its corrupting potential and setting limits on its use.
  • He also proves resourceful: rather than simply continuing north, he extracts useful terrain knowledge from the creatures’ memories and chooses a safer route.

Character interactions

  • The Strange Creatures attack Chu Bai as a coordinated group, but their strength is no match for his.
  • Their resentment initially threatens to consume him; his Fortune Golden Body helps resist it, while his Fate Destiny transforms the dangerous energy into usable Killing Intent.
  • After killing them, Chu Bai engages with the traces of their memories—not through conversation, but by carefully separating useful geographic information from the chaotic impressions they left behind.

Significant themes

  • Power and its price: The Killing Intent grants immense strength but risks eroding Chu Bai’s mind and autonomy.
  • Restraint and self-mastery: Chu Bai chooses long-term freedom and clarity over unchecked power.
  • Fortune within misfortune: The resentment that nearly harms him becomes a source of strength and valuable information.
  • Survival through knowledge: Understanding the realm’s dangers allows Chu Bai to avoid threats stronger than the creatures he has already defeated.

Ch. 266Clear heavens, turbid earth: exploring Formless City

Plot points and events

  • Chu Bai travels north through Yinfeng Gorge, a dangerous, lightless passage thick with resentment. He detects signs of human cultivation and realizes that living people have survived in this supposedly dead realm.
  • He disguises himself as part of the cliff and observes four foundation-establishment cultivators: Senior Brother Yan, two male companions, and Junior Sister Yun. Their armor and weapons are designed to resist the realm’s miasma.
  • From their conversation, Chu Bai learns of Formless City, a refuge with an inner city protected from the gray fog—but access and residence are costly. The group needs a high-tier baleful core to buy Yun a Soul-Cleansing Pill and pay their taxes.
  • Yun uses a bone compass to search for monsters. Chu Bai evades its detection, but the device identifies what appears to be a lone high-tier Strange Creature several li ahead.
  • Desperate for the core, the group sets out to hunt it. Chu Bai suspects the “lone” monster is bait or a concealed colony, and follows them, intending to intervene if they are in danger and thereby gain their trust.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai shifts from cautious exploration to a plan centered on reaching Formless City, whose records may help him find the Heaven-Burying Abyss and the Myriad Laws Divine Hall. He remains calculating, choosing observation and a possible rescue over confronting the group directly.
  • Senior Brother Yan is stern and tactical, but deeply protective of Yun. He frames the dangerous hunt as necessary to protect their shared future and escape life on the city’s margins.
  • Junior Sister Yun feels guilty about endangering her companions and considers joining the Suicide Corps if her contamination cannot be treated. Despite her weakness, she performs the group’s crucial detection task.
  • The two male cultivators share the group’s fear and desperation, yet follow Yan’s orders and commit to the hunt. Their long-standing loyalty is clear in their willingness to risk their lives for Yun.

Significant themes

  • Survival under an oppressive social order: Formless City offers safety, but only to those who can pay; even refuge is conditional.
  • Loyalty and sacrifice: Yan’s group accepts grave danger to help Yun, valuing their bonds amid brutal circumstances.
  • Desperation and risk: The need for medicine, taxes, and advancement turns a potentially fatal hunt into an apparent necessity.
  • Caution, deception, and trust: Chu Bai hides his identity and plans to earn the group’s confidence through action, while the supposed easy opportunity may itself be a trap.

Ch. 267An Ancient Immortal Awakens, Contact with Formless City

Key plot points and events

  • Four cultivators from Formless City—Yan Tieshan, Tie Niu, a sickly disciple, and Junior Sister Yun—are trapped in a canyon by a Foundation Establishment Late Stage Hundred-Eyed Grudge Spider. It overwhelms their weapons and defenses, severely injuring the men and threatening to corrupt Yun’s Divine Soul.
  • Just as the spider is about to kill them, Chu Bai emerges from the mist. He kills it with a single strike of Geng Metal Sword Qi infused with black-purple Baleful Intent, then uses Bing Fire Divine Thunder to destroy its remains.
  • Chu Bai absorbs the immense resentment released by the spider, converting it into Baleful Intent and strengthening himself without being corrupted.
  • To conceal his origins and gain access to the region, Chu Bai claims to be an ancient cultivator who survived a cataclysmic war and awakened after an unknowably long slumber. The four accept the story as truth.
  • Chu Bai gives the spider’s valuable Baleful Core to the group so they can obtain medicine for Yun. Yan Tieshan invites him to Formless City, offering the Ironblood Hall’s help and access to its Scripture Pavilion. Chu Bai agrees, gaining a guide into the city and a possible route toward the Myriad Laws Divine Hall and Heaven-Burying Abyss.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates overwhelming power, composure, and an unusual ability to absorb resentment. He also proves strategically calculating: he shapes the survivors’ awe into a convincing “ancient immortal” identity and uses their gratitude to secure entry into Formless City.
  • Yan Tieshan shifts from desperate leader to reverent intermediary. Though badly wounded, he takes the initiative to question Chu Bai cautiously, then invites him to the city in hopes of aiding his recovery and benefiting the Ironblood Hall.
  • Junior Sister Yun moves from despair and impending spiritual corruption to relief and gratitude when Chu Bai saves her and gives the group the core that may fund her treatment.
  • Tie Niu and the sickly disciple are gravely injured in the fight and, like Yan and Yun, respond to Chu Bai with shock, submission, and worship after witnessing his strength.
  • Chu Bai’s rescue establishes a relationship of intense deference: the survivors see him as a legendary elder, while he regards them as useful contacts in an unfamiliar world.

Significant themes

  • Power and survival: In the lawless Fragment Realm, strength determines who lives and commands respect.
  • Myth-making and deception: Chu Bai’s partly invented account turns his mysterious abilities into a coherent legend, showing how belief can be shaped by spectacle and circumstance.
  • Corruption versus mastery: Resentment that would destroy ordinary cultivators becomes a source of strength for Chu Bai.
  • Gratitude and mutual advantage: The group’s sincere indebtedness and Chu Bai’s calculated need for local guidance align, creating an alliance built on both reverence and practical benefit.

Ch. 268[World-Cleansing Grand Array], the Immortal Realm

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai and four injured cultivators from Ironblood Hall leave a canyon. On the way, they pass the enormous skeleton of an ancient demon. Chu Bai performs the role of an awakened ancient immortal, speaking wistfully of the world’s lost former splendor.
  • Yan Tieshan explains that a cataclysm shattered the realm and filled the wilderness with corrupting gray mist. Humanity survives mainly in Formless City, protected by the World-Cleansing Grand Array, powered by the Sea-Calming Divine Stone.
  • Formless City is sharply divided: the safer, resource-rich Inner City is reserved for those who can pay steep taxes in abomination cores, while the exposed Outer City holds the poor and vulnerable. The city is dominated by the City Lord’s Manor and three powerful clans; Ironblood Hall is a marginal faction.
  • Yan Tieshan reveals Ironblood Hall’s leader, Lei Wu, is comatose and dying from Netherworld Baleful Poison. Without him, the Wang Clan may seize the hall’s holdings and enslave or abuse its members.
  • Chu Bai agrees to help, presenting his decision as compassion and fate. Privately, he sees Ironblood Hall as a useful local ally and cover for reaching Formless City’s archives and investigating the Sea-Calming Divine Stone, which he believes is the realm’s core fragment of law.
  • After traveling another day, they reach Formless City, a brilliant refuge beneath a vast golden barrier. At its gate, a contamination-testing mirror exposes a refugee, who is executed despite his pleas.
  • Yan Tieshan warns that Chu Bai lacks an identity token, carries detectable baleful intent, and faces Wang Clan commander Wang Teng at this gate. He suggests using another entrance and obtaining false papers. Chu Bai rejects the plan and strides toward the gate.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai strengthens his carefully crafted image as an ancient, compassionate immortal, while privately pursuing his own strategic goals. He sees Ironblood Hall’s crisis as an opportunity and remains confident that his cultivation can conceal his power and intentions.
  • Yan Tieshan shifts from fearful guide to desperate petitioner, openly revealing Ironblood Hall’s plight and offering lifelong service in exchange for Chu Bai’s help. After Chu Bai agrees, he regains hope but becomes anxious again at the city gate.
  • The other three cultivators, including Junior Sister Yun, share Yan Tieshan’s fear and gratitude. Their despair turns to fervent hope after Chu Bai promises to save Lei Wu.
  • The group’s relationship with Chu Bai changes from wary deference to near-worship and reliance. Yet the gate’s guards, the Clearheart Treasure Mirror, and Wang Teng threaten to expose or challenge him before they can enter.

Significant themes

  • Survival and inequality: Even in a world devastated by catastrophe, power and resources are concentrated among elites, while the poor face dangerous labor, contamination, and execution.
  • Civilization amid ruin: Formless City’s radiant barrier offers a striking refuge, but its security depends on harsh rules, costly taxes, and exploitation.
  • Appearance versus motive: Chu Bai’s public compassion conceals calculated self-interest, while the locals interpret his actions as miraculous benevolence.
  • Hope and dependency: Ironblood Hall’s future rests on its leader’s survival and on the intervention of a powerful outsider.

Ch. 269Entering Formless City, the Netherworld Baleful Poison

Chapter Summary

Key plot points and events

  • At Wuxiang City’s gate, the Clearheart Treasure Mirror scans Chu Bai. Rather than detecting contamination, it shines with blinding white light and begins to crack—an unprecedented reaction to his extraordinary purity.
  • Guard commander Wang Teng accuses Chu Bai and Yan Tieshan’s group of being specter spies, intending to use the arrest as a pretext to weaken Ironblood Hall. Chu Bai defeats him with a single, terrifying glance, and the group enters the city.
  • Yan Tieshan explains Wuxiang City’s power structure: the Tuoba City Lord’s Estate controls the defenses, while the Li, Zhao, and Wang clans dominate medicine, artifacts and mining, and trade and military power. The Wang Household is especially hostile to Ironblood Hall.
  • Chu Bai and the others cross the impoverished Outer City and enter the wealthy Inner City, where stark inequality is visible at every turn. Ironblood Hall’s headquarters is surrounded by Wang Household spies.
  • Inside, they learn the Wang Household has issued an ultimatum: Ironblood Hall must surrender its estate and become a vassal by noon the next day, or face a massacre. The crisis is worsened by Hall Master Lei Wu’s imminent death from Netherworld Baleful Poison.
  • Yan Tieshan announces that Chu Bai can save the hall master, but the gathered cultivators doubt him. Chu Bai ignores their objections, breaks through the chamber’s defensive formations, examines Lei Wu, and declares the poison easy to cure.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai remains composed and self-assured, demonstrating overwhelming spiritual pressure without drawing a weapon. He dismisses Wang Teng’s threat as insignificant and accepts responsibility for resolving Ironblood Hall’s crisis.
  • Yan Tieshan shifts from anxiety to profound reverence for Chu Bai. Despite opposition from his own people, he publicly stakes his credibility on Chu Bai’s ability to save their hall master.
  • Wang Teng is exposed as a vindictive and insecure official, using his authority to advance his family’s interests. Chu Bai’s glance leaves him terrified and humiliates him in front of his guards.
  • Ironblood Hall’s members are divided between loyalty and desperation: some want to fight, while others prepare to flee. Their skepticism toward Chu Bai reflects how little hope they have after Medicine King Valley’s alchemist gives up on Lei Wu.

Significant themes

  • Power and intimidation: Chu Bai’s calm presence proves more effective than conventional force, while Wang Teng’s authority collapses under a single look.
  • Class inequality and exploitation: The Outer City’s hunger and misery contrast sharply with the Inner City’s abundance, built on the labor and suffering of those outside its walls.
  • Political self-interest: The Wang Household disguises a bid for Ironblood Hall’s property and markets as a security concern.
  • Despair versus hope: With their leader dying and an ultimatum looming, Ironblood Hall appears doomed—until Chu Bai offers a possible way forward.

Ch. 270Purple Abode Foundation, Supreme Venerable

Chapter Summary

  • Chu Bai diagnoses Lei Wu’s poison. Lei Wu, founder of Ironblood Hall, has been near death for three months from the Netherworld Baleful Poison. Chu Bai recognizes that it is not an ordinary toxin but a powerful, mutated grudge that devours its host’s Dao Foundation—and grows stronger when treated with conventional medicine.
  • Chu Bai cures Lei Wu and grows stronger. Using the Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture, his General Star Destiny, and overwhelming spiritual pressure, Chu Bai tears the poison from Lei Wu’s body and absorbs it. His cultivation remains at Foundation Establishment, but his Spell Power and Killing Intent increase, and he senses that he is close to the Purple Abode Heavenly Tribulation. He chooses not to break through yet: he wants the protection of Great Zhou’s Law Net and plans to find the Sea-Calming Divine Stone or the surviving core of the Myriad Laws Divine Hall first.
  • Lei Wu awakens, restored. The poison is gone, and much of the damage to Lei Wu’s meridians and marrow has healed. Yan Tieshan rushes in and weeps with relief. After hearing how Chu Bai saved him and displayed seemingly impossible power, Lei Wu concludes that Chu Bai is an ancient immortal-level being. He kneels, pledges his life and Ironblood Hall’s service, and receives Chu Bai’s promise of protection in exchange for help and access to ancient records.
  • A rebellion breaks out in the courtyard. Believing Lei Wu doomed and fearing an imminent attack by the Wang Household, more than a hundred Ironblood Hall cultivators loot the storehouse. Loyal officers try to stop them. Lei Wu is enraged and prepares to intervene, but Chu Bai tells him to wait and leads him outside.
  • Chu Bai takes control of Ironblood Hall. Chu Bai’s presence silences the courtyard, and Lei Wu’s sudden return in full strength stuns the looters. The loyalists celebrate; the traitors drop their stolen goods and beg for mercy. Lei Wu yields authority to Chu Bai, declaring him the hall’s Supreme Venerable. The entire hall accepts the command.
  • The Wang Household becomes the next challenge. The deputy hall master presents an ultimatum: by noon the next day, Ironblood Hall must surrender the deed to Everlasting Joy Street and become the Wang Household’s vassal, or face an attack. Chu Bai crushes the message into powder and orders the hall to meet the Wang Household with him.

Character Developments and Interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates both extraordinary power and strategic restraint. He treats the poison as a source of strength, declines an untimely breakthrough, and turns Ironblood Hall’s crisis into an opportunity to secure a loyal force. He also refuses to waste the traitors through immediate execution, instead designating them as cannon fodder.
  • Lei Wu moves from a dying, helpless leader to a restored and fiercely devoted ally. He recognizes Chu Bai’s superiority, offers his hall’s allegiance, and publicly transfers leadership without hesitation.
  • Yan Tieshan proves his loyalty through his concern for Lei Wu; his grief turns to joy when the hall master wakes, and he tells Lei Wu how Chu Bai saved them.
  • The deputy hall master and loyal officers remain faithful during the crisis, risking themselves to protect the storehouse. Their relief at Lei Wu’s survival contrasts with the looters’ fear and self-interest.
  • The traitors reveal their desperation and opportunism, then abase themselves once Lei Wu returns. Chu Bai’s decision to use them rather than execute them establishes his cold pragmatism.

Significant Themes

  • Power and allegiance: In the harsh wasteland, people follow strength; Chu Bai’s feats quickly transform him into Ironblood Hall’s unquestioned authority.
  • Crisis revealing character: The looting exposes who remains loyal when defeat seems certain, while Lei Wu’s response shows his willingness to put survival and leadership ahead of pride.
  • Turning danger into strength: Chu Bai converts a deadly grudge into Killing Intent and uses the same crisis to gain followers and resources.
  • Strategic patience: Despite nearing a major breakthrough, Chu Bai delays it until he can secure the right protection and conditions.
  • Mercy as calculation: Chu Bai spares the traitors not out of compassion, but because he sees a more useful role for them.

Ch. 271A blue-robed visitor knocks at night, a single word breaks the grand array

Plot and key events

  • Chu Bai leads Ironblood Hall’s forces through Formless City toward the Wang Clan’s fortified residence. Their march draws the attention of the city’s major powers and covert observers.
  • Lei Wu, whom the Wang Clan believed would die from Netherworld Absolute Baleful Poison, is alive and stronger than before. At Chu Bai’s direction, he smashes open the Wang residence’s gates and confronts clan head Wang Juefeng.
  • Wang Juefeng activates the clan’s renowned Eight Desolations Baleful-Warding Spirit Array, expecting it to protect his household until reinforcements arrive.
  • Chu Bai identifies the array’s flaws and dismisses it as crude. With one touch and the word “Disperse,” he destroys it instantly, stunning both sides and the watching factions.
  • Wang Juefeng attempts a desperate counterattack, but Chu Bai overwhelms him and the Wang Clan with the combined pressure of the purified baleful poison and his Fortune Golden Body’s draconic might. Wang Juefeng and the household members surrender without Chu Bai killing anyone.
  • Chu Bai demands that the Wang Clan trade its ancient texts and maps about the world, plus half its stored resources, for the lives of its people. He enters the residence to rest, while Lei Wu orders Ironblood Hall to take control and suppress resistance.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai remains calm and detached throughout, revealing extraordinary command of poisons, spiritual pressure, and array knowledge. His power turns the Wang Clan’s confidence into terror; he treats its surrender as a practical exchange rather than a personal vendetta.
  • Lei Wu shifts from a supposedly dying leader to a vigorous, fiercely devoted subordinate. He confronts Wang Juefeng with triumph, then eagerly carries out Chu Bai’s orders.
  • Wang Juefeng moves from arrogance and certainty in his clan’s defenses to disbelief, panic, and abject pleading once Chu Bai destroys the array and crushes him.
  • Ironblood Hall’s fighters begin with some fear of the Wang Clan’s defenses, then are emboldened by Chu Bai’s display of dominance. The watching powers likewise go from curiosity to alarm at the scale of his ability.

Significant themes

  • Overwhelming power and hierarchy: Chu Bai’s quiet authority makes established clan strength and reputation seem insignificant.
  • Knowledge versus prestige: The Wang Clan’s celebrated “ancient” array proves full of basic flaws when judged by Chu Bai’s deeper expertise.
  • Fear as a weapon: Chu Bai wins without a conventional battle, breaking the enemy’s confidence before bloodshed.
  • Power used for leverage: Rather than slaughter the defeated clan, Chu Bai demands information and resources, presenting mercy as conditional and firmly controlled.

Ch. 272The Underground Treasury, the Sea-Calming Divine Stone

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai leaves the Wang Household defeated and humiliated, with its patriarch, Wang Juefeng, unable to resist. Acting on Chu Bai’s orders, Lei Wu claims the prestigious Coiled Dragon Courtyard and demands the Wang treasury’s ancient records and half its cultivation resources.
  • Lei Wu and Ironblood Hall strip the treasury, taking the resources as instructed but seizing every old text and record. Lei Wu also settles the feud: Yan Tieshan cripples Wang Teng and several elders responsible for past abuses, while Wang Juefeng signs over disputed market streets and agrees to pay Ironblood Hall thirty percent of the Wang Household’s annual income.
  • Rather than destroy the Wang Household, Chu Bai leaves it alive as a subdued vassal. The survivors’ resentment is mixed with relief and a growing hope that Chu Bai’s protection may shield them from other enemies.
  • In the Coiled Dragon Courtyard, Chu Bai ignores the offered wealth and uses his powerful Divine Sense to rapidly examine the collected records. He finds a neglected, mostly missing map made from the same unusual material as a broken stele he previously discovered.
  • The map points toward the Heaven-Burying Abyss and depicts a ruined divine hall at its center. Its fragmentary inscription links the site to the Myriad Laws Divine Hall and the Sea-Calming Divine Stone. Though the route crosses the dangerous Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, Chu Bai is excited by the discovery.
  • Chu Bai orders Lei Wu to settle Ironblood Hall’s ordinary affairs the following morning, suggesting he is preparing for a major undertaking.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai remains detached from wealth and worldly power, using both as tools while pursuing deeper knowledge. The map gives his search a clear direction and renews his enthusiasm.
  • Lei Wu acts as Chu Bai’s loyal enforcer, transforming his former humiliation by the Wang Household into a decisive victory. He applies both threats and calculated mercy, presenting Chu Bai as the source of protection as well as punishment.
  • Wang Juefeng is reduced from a powerful patriarch to a fearful subordinate. He submits to the seizure of his family’s seat, treasury, territory, and income rather than risk annihilation.
  • Wang Teng and the abusive elders pay for their earlier cruelty and arrogance when Yan Tieshan cripples them.
  • The Wang survivors’ relationship to their new rulers shifts from terror and hatred toward reluctant dependence: they see that submission may also bring protection.

Significant themes

  • Power and submission: Absolute strength can erase resistance and reorder social hierarchies.
  • Mercy as strategy: Chu Bai spares the Wang Household not from sentiment but because a useful, obedient vassal is preferable to a massacre.
  • Fear becoming dependence: The Wang Household’s humiliation gradually gives way to hope that Chu Bai’s protection will benefit them.
  • Material wealth versus deeper knowledge: The treasury’s riches matter to Ironblood Hall, but Chu Bai values the ancient map because it may reveal the realm’s central secrets.

Ch. 273One stone stirred a thousand waves, shaking Formless City

Key plot points and events

  • After Chu Bai destroys the Wang Household, rumors exaggerate his strength until he is regarded as an awakened ancient immortal. The spectacle gives Ironblood Hall the security and prestige Chu Bai wanted.
  • Chu Bai studies a map to the Heaven-Burying Abyss and learns that the route crosses the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, home to powerful Purple Abode Realm demons. He prepares by absorbing the Wang treasury’s Spirit Stones and refining his cultivation.
  • Medicine King Valley sends its First Elder with treasured gifts, hoping to discover Chu Bai’s identity and intentions. Chu Bai accepts the gifts but dismisses the valley’s ancient pill recipe as fundamentally flawed, naming the flaw without even seeing it. Shaken by his expertise, Valley Master Li Qinglian orders her people not to provoke him.
  • The Hundred Refinements Pavilion chooses caution: it strengthens its defenses, recalls its disciples, and offers Ironblood Hall preferential treatment.
  • The City Lord’s Manor also holds back. Deputy city lord Murong Xian reveals that the manor’s Sea-Calming Divine Stone resonated with Chu Bai’s power. Acting on the old city lord’s secret order, the deputies decide not to oppose him, believing he may be the realm’s chance to break its centuries-long stalemate.
  • Over three days, Ironblood Hall absorbs the Wang Household’s territory, purges unreliable members, and equips its loyal core. Chu Bai perfects his cultivation and gives Lei Wu guidance that loosens a decade-old bottleneck.
  • On the fourth morning, Chu Bai leaves Hidden Dragon Courtyard and announces that he and his followers will venture beyond the city.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai uses overwhelming displays of power to deter challengers, while quietly preparing for a dangerous journey. His confidence grows as his cultivation and understanding of the realm deepen. He treats Medicine King Valley’s offering with contempt but gives Lei Wu practical instruction.
  • Lei Wu becomes increasingly devoted to Chu Bai, recognizing that his authority and renewed strength come from his lord. Chu Bai’s brief teaching advances Lei Wu’s cultivation and raises hopes that he can soon approach the Half-Step Purple Abode realm.
  • Li Qinglian shifts from cautious investigation to alarmed respect after Chu Bai exposes the flaw in her valley’s prized recipe. She prioritizes protecting Medicine King Valley over defending its pride.
  • Zhao Panshi responds to uncertainty by isolating the Hundred Refinements Pavilion and avoiding conflict, while extending favors to Ironblood Hall.
  • Murong Xian and Xiao Potian clash over whether to suppress Ironblood Hall. Murong’s evidence of the Sea-Calming Divine Stone’s response—and the old city lord’s order—persuades the more aggressive Xiao Potian to stand down.

Significant themes

  • Power and reputation: The rumors surrounding Chu Bai become a deterrent in themselves, reshaping the city’s political balance.
  • Pragmatism in the face of the unknown: The major factions choose caution, gifts, or observation rather than risk provoking a force they cannot understand.
  • Knowledge as authority: Chu Bai’s effortless diagnosis of the pill recipe’s flaw reinforces that his mastery extends beyond combat.
  • Mentorship and loyalty: Chu Bai’s guidance strengthens Lei Wu both physically and emotionally, helping transform Ironblood Hall into a disciplined, devoted force.
  • Change on the horizon: Chu Bai’s departure and the city’s unusual restraint foreshadow a wider upheaval in the Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm.

Ch. 274Exploring the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, the Hunt Begins!

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai leaves Formless City with Lei Wu and twelve elite Ironblood Hall cultivators, riding Cloud-Stepping Unicorns. City leaders watch their departure with a mix of relief and awe.
  • In the wilderness, Chu Bai’s powerful killing aura drives away ordinary aberrations, allowing the group to travel safely. After seven days, they reach the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, a legendary forbidden zone formed from the remains and resentment of gods and demons.
  • The miasma’s influence nearly drives the escort to madness, but Chu Bai suppresses it with his draconic might. He then manifests a Five-Colored Azure Lotus domain that repels the blood miasma and shields the party.
  • Inside, they travel through blood mud and a forest of giant bones. Chu Bai recognizes that the landscape and miasma follow the structure of an ancient formation, and identifies an approaching rib archway as the boundary between its Life and Death Gates.
  • As they pass beneath it, blood-energy tentacles erupt from the ground, destroying two unicorns and hurling their riders away. Lei Wu suspects they face a sentient Blood Fiend Demon King. Chu Bai senses a Purple Abode-level foe below and welcomes the encounter.

Character developments

  • Chu Bai remains composed and confident, displaying overwhelming power and strategic perception. His goal of reaching the Myriad Laws Divine Hall keeps him pressing forward despite the danger; the emerging threat excites rather than frightens him.
  • Lei Wu proves a loyal and capable commander, but the forbidden zone exposes the limits of even his strength. His faith in Chu Bai deepens after Chu Bai rescues the squad from the miasma’s mental assault.
  • The Ironblood elites begin the journey as disciplined soldiers, become awed by Chu Bai’s protection, and regain their courage—though the ambush demonstrates their vulnerability.
  • Li Qinglian and Zhao Panshi, observing from the city wall, reveal contrasting but cautious reactions: Li Qinglian is conflicted and impressed, while Zhao Panshi is relieved Chu Bai is leaving.

Significant themes

  • Power and hierarchy: Chu Bai’s presence suppresses both ordinary aberrations and deadly environmental forces, establishing him as vastly beyond the Wasteland’s usual standards.
  • Loyalty and dependence: The escort treats Chu Bai as its guide and protector, relying on him to survive a realm beyond the reach of ordinary laws.
  • Danger as opportunity: Chu Bai interprets the forbidden zone’s hazards as evidence that his map is accurate and that his objective lies beyond them.
  • Ancient ruin and unnatural order: The blood miasma and bone forest are revealed not as random wasteland features but as parts of a vast, ancient formation.

Character interactions

  • Lei Wu reports the party’s preparations and leads the escort, while the soldiers follow Chu Bai’s directions without question.
  • Chu Bai’s power first shields the group from the miasma’s madness, then creates a safe path through it; the elites respond with reverence and renewed vows of loyalty.
  • During the ambush, Lei Wu attacks the tentacles and warns Chu Bai, but Chu Bai remains unshaken, recognizing the enemy as worthy prey.

Ch. 276The resentful blood of gods and devils, slaying the demon king

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Bai leads Lei Wu and twelve Ironblood Hall elites into the deadly Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, where the corrosive environment weakens their protective spells.
  • A huge, barbed tentacle attacks Lei Wu. Chu Bai catches it barehanded, spreads his black-purple killing intent through it, and forces its owner—a mountain-sized blood fiend—out of hiding.
  • Though the creature’s pressure seems to rival a Purple Abode cultivator, Chu Bai recognizes that it is only at Foundation Establishment perfection, borrowing strength from the local earth-vein formation.
  • The blood fiend unleashes a storm of corrosive blood rain. Chu Bai counters with black-purple Netherworld Separation Flame, which devours the poison and resentment and grows stronger from them.
  • When the fiend tries to flee underground, Chu Bai kills it with a single strike of Geng Metal sword qi.
  • The resentment released upon its death attacks Chu Bai, but he absorbs it using his general-star fate destiny. His fortune golden body, strengthened by the people’s vow power, suppresses its corrupting influence.
  • Chu Bai searches the purified remnants of the fiend’s memories and compares its knowledge of dangerous areas with a map taken from the Wang Household. He discovers the map’s supposed shortcut leads through zones inhabited by ancient, far stronger horrors, then marks a safer route to the Heaven-Burying Abyss.
  • After allowing Lei Wu’s group time to recover, Chu Bai orders them to continue deeper into the miasma.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates overwhelming physical strength, spellcraft, and control over poison and resentment. He turns the fiend’s attacks and posthumous karmic backlash into resources, while relying on humanity’s fortune to protect his mind. His soul search also shows patience and strategic judgment, not just combat power.
  • Lei Wu moves from tense confidence to terror as the danger becomes clear, then to reverent devotion after witnessing Chu Bai’s feats. He warns Chu Bai about the karmic backlash and cautiously checks on him afterward.
  • The Ironblood Hall elites are incapacitated by the fiend’s roar and later kneel before Chu Bai, seeing him as an immortal or god.
  • The blood fiend shifts from aggressive confidence to fear when its poison is consumed, then attempts to escape before Chu Bai kills it.

Significant themes

  • Power through transformation: Chu Bai turns poison, resentment, and karmic burdens into fuel rather than being harmed by them.
  • Appearance versus reality: The fiend’s Purple Abode-like aura is borrowed from its surroundings; Chu Bai sees through the intimidation to its true cultivation.
  • Humanity’s fortune as protection: The people’s collective vow power safeguards Chu Bai’s spirit against ancient corruption.
  • Knowledge and caution: The fiend’s memories reveal that a seemingly convenient shortcut conceals catastrophic dangers, making hard-won intelligence essential to survival.

Ch. 277The killing aura of war, words that became law!

Plot and events

  • Chu Bai, Lei Wu, and Ironblood Hall’s twelve elites venture into the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma, where visibility and divine sense are severely restricted.
  • A massive blood-soaked tentacle attacks Lei Wu. Chu Bai catches it barehanded and draws the hidden monster out: a flesh-and-bone aberration whose power is amplified by the surrounding earth-vein formation.
  • The creature unleashes corrosive blood rain. Chu Bai counters with black-purple killing intent, enhanced by the Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture and his General Star destiny. His flames consume the rain and trap the monster.
  • When the aberration tries to escape, Chu Bai kills it with a single strike of Geng Metal Sword Qi, then devours the vast resentment and karmic burden released from its corpse.
  • Chu Bai suppresses the resulting mental corruption with the humanity’s fortune embodied in his fate-forged golden body. He then searches the purified memories, discovering that the Wang Household’s map marks a deadly shortcut through the miasma’s most dangerous regions.
  • Combining the monster’s memories with the map, Chu Bai charts a safer route toward the Heaven-Burying Abyss. He orders Lei Wu’s group to regroup before following him deeper into the forbidden zone.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai displays overwhelming physical strength, composure, and confidence, defeating a threat that appears to rival the Purple Abode Realm without using his trump card. He also proves capable of absorbing and refining dangerous resentment, though doing so requires him to actively defend his mind.
  • Lei Wu shifts from wary leadership to helpless terror, then to reverence after witnessing Chu Bai’s power. He warns Chu Bai about the karmic backlash and follows his commands.
  • Ironblood Hall’s elites are initially endangered by the monster’s roar and later kneel in awe, seeing Chu Bai as an ancient immortal.
  • Chu Bai’s calm explanations counter the group’s panic: he clarifies that the monster’s apparent Purple Abode-level pressure comes from borrowing the formation’s power, not from its own cultivation.

Significant themes

  • Power and perception: The monster’s fearsome aura masks a lower true cultivation level, while Chu Bai’s actual abilities exceed what the others can imagine.
  • Mastery through transformation: Chu Bai turns poison, resentment, and karmic burden—normally deadly forces—into fuel for his own power.
  • Humanity’s fortune and inner discipline: The fortune gathered through his service to ordinary people protects his mind from the evil he absorbs.
  • Knowledge as survival: The monster’s instinctive memories make the difference between a deadly shortcut and a viable route to the group’s destination.

Ch. 278The Breath of Origin, Exploring the Abyss

Plot and events

  • Chu Bai leads Ironblood Hall through the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma using directions taken from the Demon King’s memories, avoiding deadly spatial hazards that the Wang Household’s map wrongly marks as safe.
  • The party enters Heart-Demon Miasma, which provokes violent greed, rage, and personal illusions. Chu Bai uses the Fortune Golden Body’s dragon-cry to dispel it and restore the group’s reason.
  • They reach an ancient battlefield haunted by undying war souls. Ordinary attacks cannot harm the spirits, whose strikes target the soul. Chu Bai reveals his General Star Destiny, then uses the Golden Edict to command the heroic dead to lay down their arms and rest. They salute him and fade away.
  • With the battlefield’s killing aura gone, Chu Bai discovers a White Jade Altar belonging to the Myriad Laws Divine Hall. Its inscriptions reveal that traitors to the Heavenly Dao opened the world to an invasion by Extraterrestrial Demons, shattering the realm. The Divine Hall was built to suppress the Heaven-Burying Abyss, where a fragment of a “Great Terror’s” remains is sealed. Reactivating its formation requires three Immortal Boundary-Steles; the broken stele Chu Bai encountered earlier may be one.
  • The departing war souls leave their battle intent to Chu Bai. It condenses his baleful energy into a Black Baleful Crystal Core, greatly strengthening his control and combat power.
  • Chu Bai’s party exits the miasma and reaches the Heaven-Burying Abyss. A colossal, ancient Purple Abode Realm beast guarding the bridge awakens, recognizes that Chu Bai carries the scent of its homeland but is not native to this world, and demands his identity.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates foresight, spiritual power, and authority beyond ordinary cultivation: he protects the party from the miasma, honors the war souls rather than destroying them, uncovers the realm’s history, and gains a major power increase.
  • Lei Wu and the Ironblood Hall elites move from fear and dependence to intense reverence for Chu Bai. Lei Wu nearly succumbs to an illusion and later suffers a soul-targeting attack, underscoring the party’s vulnerability without Chu Bai.
  • The war souls are revealed not as evil spirits but as ancient defenders bound to their duty. They respond to Chu Bai’s battle aura and accept his decree, finally finding peace.
  • The chapter ends with a tense confrontation: the awakened guardian singles out Chu Bai while the rest of the group remains overwhelmed by its presence.

Significant themes

  • Leadership and trust: Chu Bai’s judgment repeatedly saves his followers, who increasingly regard him with near-religious awe.
  • Conviction, duty, and release: The war souls’ devotion is honored, then freed from an endless watch.
  • Authority aligned with principle: Chu Bai’s commands work through rightful order and recognition, not brute force.
  • A fractured world’s buried history: Betrayal, invasion, and the sealed threat beneath the Abyss frame the larger danger.
  • Power earned through inheritance and service: Chu Bai’s new strength comes from the battlefield’s final gift.

Ch. 279Endless Slaughter, an Unwavering Dao Heart

Key plot points and events

  • Abyssguard’s overwhelming Divine Sense pins down Lei Wu and the Ironblood Hall elites, but Chu Bai’s Fortune Golden Body shields him from the worst of it.
  • To avoid being treated as an intruder, Chu Bai claims to be a Realm Patrol Envoy sent by the Celestial Venerable who created the realm’s seal. He explains his low cultivation and damaged Divine Soul as consequences of crossing the broken world barrier.
  • Chu Bai convinces Abyssguard that he knows the ancient calamity’s secrets, including the Heavenly Dao Traitor and the Extraterrestrial Demons. Abyssguard nevertheless demands proof that he can cleanse corruption.
  • Chu Bai allows Abyssal Origin Breath—a substance that could corrupt even a Purple Abode expert—to touch him. His Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture purifies and assimilates it, convincing Abyssguard that he is a legitimate successor to its masters’ teachings.
  • Abyssguard bows, accepts Chu Bai as its honored Envoy, and explains that restoring the destroyed Myriad Laws Divine Hall requires recovering three Immortal Boundary-Steles: one fragment lies in the Ten Thousand Bones Blood Miasma; another is held by the Fallen Immortal Alliance on the abyss’s first three levels; and the most intact stele fell to the ninth level, the Eye of Returning Ruins.
  • Bound by its duty to guard the broken bridge, Abyssguard cannot accompany Chu Bai, but gives him an Abyssguard Scale to help him pass the entrance barrier and resist corruption. Chu Bai leaves Lei Wu’s group in Abyssguard’s protection and enters the abyss alone.

Character developments and interactions

  • Chu Bai demonstrates composure, quick strategic thinking, and confidence under mortal threat. He improvises a convincing identity, uses his knowledge and aura to win Abyssguard’s trust, and proves his power through the purification test.
  • Abyssguard shifts from suspicious guardian to devoted ally. Its long-held hope of restoring the Myriad Laws Divine Hall motivates it to reveal crucial information and entrust Chu Bai with its scale.
  • Lei Wu and the elites are helpless under Abyssguard’s pressure and stunned by Chu Bai’s successful deception and transformation into the guardian’s superior.
  • Chu Bai’s exchange with Abyssguard moves from interrogation and a dangerous test to mutual respect, an alliance, and a clear mission.

Significant themes

  • Composure and ingenuity under pressure: Chu Bai survives not through force, but by controlling the conversation and exploiting the situation.
  • Legitimacy and inheritance: Abyssguard ultimately recognizes Chu Bai through the purity and power of his Daoist inheritance, not merely his claimed title.
  • Duty and perseverance: Abyssguard has guarded its post for ages, while Chu Bai accepts the perilous task of seeking the steles and restoring the hall.
  • A step into the unknown: Chu Bai’s solitary entrance into the abyss marks the beginning of a much more dangerous stage of his journey.

Ch. 280Inner and Outer Flawlessness, the Broken Realmguard Stele

Plot points and events

  • Chu Bai enters the Heaven-Burying Abyss, where extreme gravity, compressed space, and the corrosive Abyssal Breath cripple movement and Divine Sense. The Abyss-Suppressing Scale protects him from most of the Breath.
  • After he kills an Abyss Wraith, he discovers the first layer is crowded with tens of thousands of powerful wraiths. His General Star Destiny can absorb their resentment, so he treats the horde as a chance to strengthen himself.
  • Using the Black Baleful Crystal Core to amplify basic spells, Chu Bai massacres wraiths and rapidly increases his power. But absorbing their resentment also exposes him to fragments of their memories and emotions.
  • The accumulated hatred, grief, and madness begin corrupting his Dao Heart. Chu Bai loses control, becomes violently reckless, and even attacks his own shadow.
  • He is saved when memories of the people of Anping County—their devotion, prayers, and ordinary hopes—resonate with his Fortune Golden Body. Its golden light clears a path through the corruption and restores his awareness.
  • Chu Bai stops unrestricted absorption and uses the Fortune Golden Body to filter incoming resentment, allowing only purified energy to reach his core. This slows his gains sharply but restores control and steadies his Dao Heart.
  • He then investigates the source of the wraiths with his Divine Sense. He discovers a vast suction drawing souls and resentment into a bone altar bound by black chains of law. An eerie object rests atop it, which he suspects is connected to the Abyssal realm’s central secret and the Immortal Boundary-Stele.

Character development

  • Chu Bai begins confident and pragmatic, viewing the wraiths as an opportunity to break through toward the Purple Abode.
  • His hunger for rapid power overwhelms his caution, exposing how easily ambition can become self-destruction.
  • After nearly losing himself, he recognizes the danger of greed and chooses restraint, accepting slower cultivation in exchange for control.
  • His connection to Anping’s people proves to be more than a source of power: their goodwill anchors his identity and protects his Dao Heart.

Character interactions

  • Chu Bai confronts the Abyss Wraiths first as an attacker and then as a relentless hunter, exploiting their resentment while they overwhelm him in numbers.
  • Within his sea of consciousness, the Fortune Golden Body struggles to cleanse the corruption and ultimately helps save him when Anping’s Human Willing Force strengthens it.
  • Chu Bai’s relationship with the people of Anping is central despite their absence: their faith and affection restore his clarity at his moment of greatest danger.

Significant themes

  • Power and its cost: Rapid strength gained without restraint can destroy the person who seeks it.
  • Greed versus discipline: Chu Bai’s efficient but reckless devouring nearly proves fatal; purification and patience offer a safer path.
  • Identity and memory: The wraiths’ memories threaten to bury Chu Bai’s own self, while his bonds with others help him remember who he is.
  • Humanity as protection: The people’s sincere goodwill becomes a spiritual defense against the abyss’s despair and madness.
  • Uncovering hidden causes: The wraith sea is revealed as part of a larger system centered on a mysterious bone altar and its unknown relic.
