Background / History
Farming origins and paid instruction
Chu Bai grows up as the eldest child in a family that has farmed for generations. His father supports a sickly wife and three children. By the opening chapter, Chu Bai has studied literacy at Azure Cloud Academy for two years, but its outer-division breathing exercises lack the formula needed for true cultivation 1 2.
His private status panel awakened half a year before Chapter 2, after sustained fieldwork, study, and practice. It initially displayed skills; his diligence-related fate appeared later. Even with this advantage, the incomplete method leaves him unable to progress beyond its cap 2 3.
The inner-division course costs ten taels. His family supplies six taels and borrows four from his second uncle, enabling him to study under Daoist Zhang. Chu Bai accepts the money with a promise not to waste their sacrifice 3 4.
Earning resources and becoming a disciple
Cultivation rapidly increases Chu Bai’s food requirements. When his second aunt publicly demands repayment, Tutor Liu guarantees the debt if Chu Bai fails the entrance examination and helps arrange paid work through Zhang 9 10.
Chu Bai and Gu Qinghe become living targets for Zhao Xing’s spells, earning three hundred copper coins per session. The work funds better meals and provides close observation of spellcasting. A month of consistent attendance, resilience, and rapid learning earns Wu Shang’s respect and leads Zhang to assess Chu Bai personally 10 12 13 14 15.
Zhang accepts him as his sixth personal disciple, gives him practical equipment, waives his tuition, and offers unrestricted cultivation guidance. Chu Bai immediately shares the news with his family, whose financial pressure is substantially eased 15 16.
The Three-Bath River
Chu Bai discovers water-aspected qi near the Three-Bath River but seeks his master’s advice before absorbing it. With a filtering method, he safely integrates Pure Bathing Spirit Flow into his neutral foundation 17 18.
Seeking richer qi farther from shore brings him into a mutated fish’s territory. He kills it in a desperate fight, then turns its nourishing flesh into a cultivation resource. Zhang identifies it as an unintelligent, spiritually strengthened animal rather than a true demonic beast 20 21 22.
When the Spirit Flow drifts away alongside an enormous underwater creature, Chu Bai refuses to pursue it. Two months of slower, regular cultivation follow, ending with his breakthrough to Qi Refining during a thunderstorm 24.
County selection and departure
Before the selection, Chu Bai repays his uncle’s four-tael loan with five hundred copper coins in interest and brings gifts. He declines to ask for lodging after his aunt’s hostile reception; Zhang instead houses him and explains the examination’s three trials 29 31 32.
In the qi-absorption assessment, Chu Bai fills his examination Jade Ring to capacity after ten hours. In Heart Inquiry, he rejects an illusory life of wealth and power and becomes the first candidate to awaken. His eventual results earn him Grade A in all three subjects and the title Three-Grade Champion 36 39 43 44 47.
His success attracts wealthy patrons, but he refuses potentially compromising commercial offers. He accepts modest village gifts to establish goodwill toward his family, leaves his parents twenty taels, and departs with fellow successful candidate Li Han 45 46.
Prefectural Dao Academy
At the Prefectural Dao Academy, Chu Bai receives gray ordination and joins Class Three. He shares Room Seven with Jiang Kuo, Zhou Tong, and Chen Shi, and begins learning the broader foundations of cultivation 47 48 49.
Instructor Ji Yu recognizes his rare combination of a solid Pure-Origin foundation, water-aspected energy, and high technique proficiency. Offered either immediate water specialization or broader compatibility, Chu Bai chooses the Origin Return Formula 50.
He adapts quickly to the new method. Dong Feng, an influential clan prodigy, challenges his examination standing, while Li Han discloses information about Chu Bai to gain Dong Feng’s favor. Jiang Kuo intervenes; Chu Bai declines to be drawn into the rivalry and returns to cultivation. He later ends his association with Li Han when the latter attempts to justify the betrayal 52 65.
Academy assignments earn Chu Bai Dao Merit for spells and resources. His progress in cultivation, combat, and Spirit Water Needle brings him to the top of his class in Spell Arts and practical combat. He deliberately adds Formless Cloud Hand and Origin Guard Shield to address weaknesses in control and defense, reaches Qi Refining Second Layer, and pursues a Five-Element foundation with Supervisor Chen’s guidance 59 60 63 66 80 81.
Despite being a first-year student, Chu Bai enters the Immortal Official Examination. He adds movement and healing arts, trains with Wang Qingli, wins an unprecedented Immortal Clerk appointment, and finishes his studies early with White Ordination 91 107 115.
Demon-Suppression Office and Heavenly Examination
Chu Bai returns to Anping and joins the Demon-Suppression Office under Zhang Cheng, seeking field experience while remaining close to his family and former master. He uncovers corruption, gains allies including Hu Hao, and advances his cultivation alongside his official duties. His Demon-Slaying Squad reduces local demon cases, and his annual assessments bring rewards that strengthen his cultivation environment 115 122 138 140.
He rejects compromising gifts and later declines a higher local command post to preserve time for cultivation. Having entered Qi Refining Late-Stage, he aims for Azure Ordination through the dangerous Heavenly Examination. By his departure, he has reached the ninth layer, secured protection for his family, and said farewell to his squad 138 144 145 157.
In the Azure Nether Realm, Chu Bai turns its hostile energies into a cultivation advantage and discovers that Azure Nether Pearls can awaken a ruined Land God statue. His actions during the examination save thousands of candidates. He establishes the Cosmic Cycle Wheel Dao Foundation, receives Azure Ordination, and attains Foundation Establishment, but a political dispute ends in a sentence of exile to the Far North 161 173 176 177 180.
The Far North and return
A golden shackle suppresses Chu Bai’s power and bars his return south until he has traveled thirty thousand li. He walks into exile deliberately, using its pressure and the northern terrain to cultivate. At Falling Star Slope he develops the Geng Metal Body-Forging Art; later hardship completes his golden body, and Earth Vein Essence helps carry him to Foundation Establishment Middle Stage 180 198 199.
Seeking to break free of the restraint, he negotiates a practical alliance with Zuo Qiu and the True Spirit Society rather than pledging himself to it. He travels through hostile tribal territories, confronts powerful opponents, and reaches God-Severing Peak. There he awakens the Primordial Origin, Beneficent Waters True Spirit and breaks the ancient seal. His shackle eventually dissolves, and he returns bearing substantial Heavenly Dao merit and influence in the Far North 210 211 215 216.
At the Merit Office, Chu Bai presents a resource-access treaty and evidence of his achievements. His exile sentence and criminal record are canceled, and his Azure-ordained official status is restored. He subsequently balances offers from several prefectural powers without surrendering his independence 216 217.
Return to Anping and the Purple Register examination
Chu Bai reunites with Lü Qing and returns to the Prefectural Dao Academy. He honors his former teachers and studies its Dao Repository to remedy gaps in his understanding of the Purple Abode path. An imperial edict then appoints him Lord of Northern Peace and Magistrate of Anping County. He accepts the opportunity to gain governing experience, merit, and the fortune needed for further advancement 218 219 220 221.
He returns home, supports his family, promises protection to Locust Elder, and begins reforms addressing winter fuel, local administration, and irrigation. Popular trust and merit nourish his Divine Soul and Fortune Golden Body. He later brings his Foundation Establishment cultivation to its limit and enters the Purple Register Heavenly Examination, choosing the exceptionally dangerous Heavenly Abyss Fragment Realm 225 230 254 261.
Within the fragment realm, Chu Bai takes command of Ironblood Hall and pursues records concerning the Sea-Calming Divine Stone and the realm’s ancient ruins. He rejects indiscriminate slaughter as a means of rule, seeking willing public support instead. After trials involving the realm’s abyss and its resentful spirits, he attains the Purple Abode realm 272 283 282 294.
Heavenly Abyss City and southwestern rule
Chu Bai develops Heavenly Abyss City into a military, commercial, and administrative center. Victory over a demonic assault at Azure Cloud Gorge lets him secure the gorge and adjoining territory. He distributes battlefield rewards by contribution, strengthens the Mystic Guards, and advances to Purple Abode Middle Stage 303 304.
As his authority grows, he links regional earth veins through World-Suppressing Steles and draws neighboring powers into a Southwestern Alliance. Ten years of cultivation bring his Purple Abode to its limit. Discovering a plan to drain Qingzhou’s spiritual marrow for the Divine Capital, he prepares to stop the delegation while gathering what he needs for a supreme Golden Core breakthrough 309 312 315.
Chu Bai survives his tribulation and forms a flawless Supreme First-Rank Golden Core. Free of the Supreme Golden Register’s bond, he unifies the Southwestern Alliance and Heavenly Abyss Merchant Alliance under his control. He rejects an imperial summons but avoids immediate civil war: a loyalist memorial and a discreet gift to the emperor preserve formal legitimacy while securing broad regional authority 325 326.
He absorbs local armed forces into a unified army and establishes free cultivation academies for children with spiritual roots regardless of family background. When a Super Beast Tide strikes the southern frontier, he mobilizes that army and investigates what allowed a Golden Core demon to arise in the Ten-Thousand-Demon Marsh 326 328.
Appearance
Chu Bai’s initially slight frame becomes firmer through sparring, improved nutrition, and cultivation 14.
- Early clothing: A short, rough-spun tunic washed gray 1.
- Physical development: Faintly defined muscles appear after a month of training at the Zhao Residence 14.
- Cultivated bearing: His previously somewhat dark skin gains a faint sheen; his gaze becomes more contained, and his presence grows composed and steady 24.
- Later clothing: Commonly wears the blue Azure Cloud Robe given by his master 16 26 29.
- Official bearing: During his exile, he wears an issued blue official robe and an Azure Ordination tablet rather than prison garb 180.
- Returned-to-simplicity appearance: Following his Purple Abode breakthrough, his hair is again glossy black and his visible demonic mark disappears. In a plain white scholar’s robe, he appears unassuming despite his power 294.
Personality
Chu Bai is methodical about improvement. He values small, measurable gains, reviews failed casts, and treats proficiency as an investment that makes later practice more efficient. His determination can approach overexertion, but he stops when his body signals injury and preserves emergency Spell Power during river training 6 13 27.
His caution is deliberate rather than timid. He consults Zhang before mixing unfamiliar qi, abandons a valuable Spirit Flow when a stronger creature appears, and refuses to seek lethal combat merely to activate a fate 17 18 24 28.
He remains composed under both humiliation and praise. He answers his aunt respectfully without conceding impossible repayment demands, accepts Li Jinyuan’s friendship without flattery, and stays modest after his examination victory. Although socially perceptive, he finds the crowd of congratulatory patrons difficult to handle 8 9 44.
Family loyalty shapes his spending and choices. He insists that everyone share the meat he earns, conceals dangers to spare his parents worry, and returns home to reassure them even when his master offers further instruction. His respect for Zhang continues after gaining public standing 14 41 42 44.
His original ambition centers on escaping poverty and gaining access to cultivation. Heart Inquiry clarifies a deeper goal: to keep advancing, discover higher realms, and learn what lies beyond the Celestial Court and the known world 1 7 39.
Later, Chu Bai repeatedly weighs ambition against survival and obligation: he suppresses an ill-timed breakthrough during the demon whale’s catastrophe, negotiates carefully while seeking freedom from exile, and regards governing well as part of his path rather than a distraction from it 199 210 221 225. He remains willing to forgive an old opponent, but distinguishes reconciliation from accepting a betrayal without consequence 65 222.
As a ruler, he combines material incentives and political calculation with concern for ordinary people. He rejects a massacre that would produce fear rather than willing support, builds opportunities for children outside established lineages, and resists a plan that would devastate Qingzhou’s inhabitants 283 315 326.
Abilities & Skills
Status Panel and Diligence Fate
Chu Bai can summon a pale-blue panel visible only to himself, displaying his realm, skills, progress, and acquired fates 2.
- Reliable feedback: Progress bars confirm whether practice is producing results and expose the limits of incomplete instruction 3.
- “Toil Without End, Labor Without Rest”: Sustained practice produces progress and eventual breakthroughs; later panel renderings call it “Relentless Toil, Relentless Effort” 2 42.
- Bottleneck assistance: Makes the hundred-strand compression into Spell Power proceed smoothly 24 26.
- Beyond ordinary technique limits: Continued practice eventually carries his Origin Return Formula and Spell Arts beyond limits previously treated as their pinnacle 138 139 173.
- Limits: Does not supply missing formulas, remove nutritional requirements, or prevent harm from excessive practice 3 6 9.
Food Injury Leaks Elegance, Quick-Witted
This fate improves comprehension and efficiently converts consumed energy into cultivation. Once active, it increases cultivation speed by 50% 16.
- Helps him grasp circulation patterns and extract more usable energy from meals 16.
- Makes nourishing meat—especially the mutated fish—an effective cultivation aid 14 22.
- Greatly increases hunger; inadequate food can deplete his vitality and damage his foundation 9.
- By Qi Refining, ordinary grains and regular meat no longer adequately meet his needs 42.
- Later helps him turn regular Spirit Cuisine into sustained cultivation and improvements to his meridians and aptitude 65 66.
Seven Killings in the Fate Palace
A combat-oriented fate appears after Chu Bai kills the mutated fish. Its stated effects include greatly increased combat instincts, explosive power, and growth through battle 21.
- Produces an urgent danger warning when a massive creature accompanies the departing Spirit Flow 24.
- Chu Bai suspects that genuine mortal peril, rather than controlled sparring, is needed to activate it; this remains his hypothesis 28.
- Still inactive in his post-examination review; by the Half-Year Grand Competition, Chu Bai counts it among his combat advantages 42 66.
Seals and Merit Nurtured Each Other, Deeds Forged Destiny
Ordination creates a fate tied to his entry into the dynasty’s registered cultivation system. Initially inactive, its merit-related enhancement later contributes to his cultivation and the development of a Fortune Golden Body 48 122 230.
- Merit: Accumulates Fortune, strengthening all other active fates while that blessing lasts.
- Wrongdoing: Accumulates Karmic Burden, causing misfortune while adversity sharpens his Dao Heart.
- Separate consequences: Merit and wrongdoing cannot cancel each other out.
- When it first appears, Chu Bai has not yet established what actions the fate recognizes as merit or wrongdoing 48.
- Later merit and public faith nourish his Divine Soul; concern about karmic burden also informs how he handles wavering allies before his Golden Core tribulation 230 320.
Cultivation Methods and Pure Bathing Spell Power
His foundation begins with balanced, attribute-less Pure-Origin Spiritual Qi and later incorporates purified water qi 7 18.
- Minor Qi Gathering Technique: Combines body-tempering moving practice with still cultivation; high proficiency improves circulation and absorption 4 23.
- Qi-Filtering Method: Expels gray-black baleful impurities before wild qi reaches his dantian 18.
- Pure Bathing Spirit Flow: Nourishes meridians and improves qi purity 18.
- Pure Bathing Spell Power: Cleanses accumulated impurities and foreign qi from his meridians, giving him substantial endurance in absorption assessments 34 36.
- Origin Return Formula: His selected higher-tier method preserves existing insights and accommodates multiple attributes, but offers less specialized killing power and elemental burst strength 50.
- Adaptability: At high proficiency, the Origin Return Formula converts varied and even hostile environmental energies into usable power. It helps him endure imbalanced secret realms and sustain combat where specialists exhaust themselves 69 71 161.
- Five-Element foundation: Integrates Innate Geng Metal Qi and other elemental energies, eventually completing a balanced Five-Element cycle 80 81 153.
- Cosmic Cycle Wheel and Dragon: His Foundation Establishment Dao Foundation transforms power among the Five Elements and devours energies and traits; Earth Vein Essence later drives its Cosmic Cycle Dragon transformation 177 199.
- Higher-realm methods: Begins the Five Phases Returning to the Celestial Palace Art during exile and later cultivates the Origin-Opening Daoist Scripture 180 254.
Spirit Water Needle
Taught by Daoist Zhang, Spirit Water Needle is a quiet, low-cost offensive spell distinguished by its piercing power 23.
- Pierces a board and earthen wall after his Qi Refining breakthrough; later penetrates Ironwood and several inches of the wall behind it 24 32.
- At proficient mastery, casts instantly and becomes more transparent and difficult to detect 28.
- Can form five simultaneous needles and guide them through simple midair curves 28.
- Can conceal needles among raindrops and strike moving fish while accounting for refraction 27 28.
- Limits: Dividing spiritual sense among multiple needles requires precise control. Chu Bai identifies strong defenses and close combat as weaknesses in his otherwise narrow spell repertoire 27 42.
- Under Ji Yu’s instruction, gains a flexible spiral motion; later casts drill-like attacks that pierce an armored puppet’s core and needles precise enough for silent assassinations 53 59 153.
- At Minute Precision, his water needles exceed ordinary Qi Refining limits; he later judges himself capable of releasing more than a thousand at once 146 156.
Water Control and Combat Judgment
Chu Bai develops practical defensive skills while serving as Zhao Xing’s target and sparring partner 14 25.
- Angles his shield to deflect fireballs rather than absorb their full impact 14.
- Uses spiritual sense to read spell trajectories and improve evasive movement 25.
- Disrupts fireballs with water droplets, obscures vision, and interrupts casting 25.
- Holds back enough to avoid seriously injuring Zhao Xing and disguises a potentially decisive result as a near-tie 25.
- Later combines Origin Guard Shield, Formless Cloud Hand, and targeted needles to block attacks, redirect momentum, and strike exposed points 63 69 71.
Talisman Use
Chu Bai successfully activates a Clean-Clothes Talisman during his first general-studies lesson by channeling energy through its cinnabar lines 49.
- Demonstrates basic talisman activation, not talisman-making proficiency 49.
Later Spell Arts and Divine Abilities
Chu Bai deliberately broadens his repertoire beyond a single offensive technique 60 66 81 91.
- Formless Cloud Hand: An adaptable control art that manipulates objects and redirects an opponent’s force; it compensates for close-range weaknesses 59 60 63 71.
- Origin Guard Shield: A mobile shield whose attribute response adapts to incoming attacks and whose strength increases with purer Spell Power 66.
- Golden Eye Illusion-Breaker: Perceives illusions and energy flows and can deliver a costly, penetrating attack 81.
- Firestep Dash and Spring-Rejuvenation Seal: Address movement and recovery. Stored healing seals activate when he is injured 91.
