Ch. 41The Professor Looked Well Today

Quirrell invited Gavin to tea and tried to probe his mind for information about the Astronomy Tower incident, but Gavin redirected the Legilimency into a terrifying mental trap. Shaken by the encounter, Quirrell was ordered by Voldemort to leave Gavin alone for now while continuing to watch him.

  • Quirrell invited Gavin to his office for tea and questioned him about the Astronomy Tower incident.
  • Quirrell used Legilimency on Gavin, and Gavin guided the intrusion into a mental landscape that overwhelmed Quirrell with painful emotions and a dissolving sense of self.
  • Quirrell fought his way out of Gavin's mind, and Gavin left after warning him indirectly that the tea had been good.
  • Voldemort scolded Quirrell for wasting power and failing to handle Gavin, then ordered him not to probe Gavin again for the time being.

Ch. 42If you want to move the plot forward, don't be too gentle

Gavin searched for ways to influence consciousness and realized the Philosopher’s Stone might offer a way to break magical limits and save Cordelia. He nudged Harry, Ron, and Hermione toward Nicolas Flamel, and they discovered that Flamel owned the Stone.

  • Gavin searched the library for magic that could influence consciousness, but found little beyond spells that altered memories.
  • When Harry asked about Nicolas Flamel, Gavin connected the Philosopher’s Stone to his need for power beyond ordinary magic and decided he could not wait for the plot to unfold on its own.
  • Gavin suggested that Flamel might be a medieval wizard rather than a modern one, prompting Harry, Ron, and Hermione to search records from the Middle Ages.
  • Hermione found that Nicolas Flamel was a famous fourteenth-century alchemist who owned the Philosopher’s Stone.

Ch. 43There Had to Be Something Under That Turban

Gavin encouraged Fred and George to investigate what Professor Quirrell kept beneath his turban, leading them to torment Quirrell with increasingly foul smells. On the day of the Quidditch match, Snape and Quirrell were both absent, leaving Gavin to wonder whether the twins’ campaign had changed events.

  • Gavin told Fred and George that Quirrell’s turban seemed suspicious, and they began trying to make him remove it.
  • Fred and George’s pranks failed to dislodge Quirrell’s turban, and Professor McGonagall punished them for targeting a professor.
  • Gavin supplied the twins with fermented herring and pickled auk, which they used to make Quirrell’s life increasingly unpleasant.
  • Rumors that Snape would referee the Gryffindor–Hufflepuff match worried Harry and the twins, but Madam Hooch appeared as referee instead.
  • Gavin noticed that both Snape and Quirrell were absent, while Ron remarked that Quirrell had seemed to smell something strange lately.

Ch. 44Gryffindor Thought They Had This in the Bag

Gryffindor entered the Quidditch match expecting an easy victory, but Cedric Diggory’s Nimbus 2000 and decisive Snitch catch gave Hufflepuff a stunning 150–50 win. Professor McGonagall began investigating Hufflepuff’s success, while Snape’s delight carried into Potions class, where he awarded Cedric a point.

  • Before the match, Cedric bet Cho Chang that Hufflepuff would win and hinted that he had improved his equipment.
  • Cedric revealed that he had a Nimbus 2000, surprising the crowd, but Gryffindor quickly took control and led 50–0.
  • Cedric spotted the Golden Snitch and caught it ahead of Harry, ending the match with a 150–50 Hufflepuff victory.
  • Professor McGonagall wondered whether Hufflepuff had developed a new tactic, while Snape celebrated Gryffindor’s defeat.
  • During the following week’s Potions class, Snape praised Cedric’s stirring and awarded Hufflepuff a point.

Ch. 45You Two Actually Make a Good Match

After Hufflepuff’s dramatic Quidditch victory, Cedric used his bet with Cho Chang to ask her out, while Gavin joined the Transfiguration Club and began investigating the limits of magic. The chapter ended with Gavin connecting Polyjuice Potion’s lasting effects after death to a possible way of challenging the Five Exceptions.

  • Hufflepuff students celebrated their win over Gryffindor and began discussing the possibility of winning the Quidditch Cup.
  • Cedric reminded Cho Chang of their bet and asked her to go somewhere with him over the summer; Cho said she would think about it.
  • Gavin attended the Transfiguration Club, where Percy Weasley warned him about Fred and George, and Gavin teased Percy about his relationship with Penelope Clearwater.
  • Professor McGonagall proposed that Gavin investigate Food Transfiguration under her supervision and possibly write a paper proving or disproving the Five Exceptions.
  • Gavin tried to Transfigure matches into prawn crackers, then connected his failed attempts to the fact that people who died under Polyjuice Potion did not change back.

Ch. 46I Must Be Dreaming

Gavin realized Cordelia’s Obscurus was growing and decided to accelerate his plans to secure the Philosopher’s Stone while preparing for the risks. He practiced the Disillusionment Charm at night, and Justin saw him partially merge with the corridor wall and convinced himself it was a dream.

  • Gavin sensed that Cordelia’s Obscurus had grown, though Cordelia reported no change, and he decided he could no longer wait to advance his plans.
  • Gavin showed Fred and George that their prank products were ordinary and provoked them by suggesting they had never seen a real alchemical item, hoping to draw out the Marauder’s Map.
  • Gavin planned to get Quirrell to pursue the Philosopher’s Stone while ensuring Harry followed the original path, and he added observing and protecting himself to his preparations.
  • Gavin learned the Disillusionment Charm and practiced adjusting it until his body became increasingly difficult to see against his surroundings.
  • Justin encountered Gavin partially blended into the corridor wall during his late-night practice and returned to bed, insisting that he must have been dreaming.

Ch. 47The Wooden Plank Came to Life

Gavin secretly intensified his efforts to wear down Professor Quirrell while practicing the Disillusionment Charm and concealing his movements from Pipi. He also obtained an old parchment from the Weasley twins, and Cordelia’s black hole continued expanding toward its critical point in early July.

  • At breakfast, Justin told Ernie and the others that he had seen a flickering wooden plank with Gavin’s face, but Gavin denied being involved and Justin had no proof.
  • Fred and George challenged Gavin to uncover the secret of an old parchment; Gavin negotiated a month to solve it and later activated it by saying, “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”
  • Pipi worried because it could no longer track Gavin, and Gavin persuaded it not to report his Disillusionment Charm practice to Dumbledore, agreeing to leave a note when he disappeared.
  • Gavin continued using the twins’ pranks and his own hidden disturbances to wear down Quirrell and push him toward acting sooner.
  • At St. Mungo’s, Gavin found that Cordelia’s black hole was expanding steadily and estimated it would reach its critical point in early July; Cordelia noticed his distraction and warned him not to get hurt.

Ch. 48This Isn't a Dog, It's a Dragon

Gavin followed Quirrell at night but stopped to restrain Hagrid’s dragon, Norbert, and learned that Hagrid had been tricked into revealing Fluffy’s weakness. After Dumbledore replied that he trusted Snape, Harry, Ron, and Hermione decided they would investigate the Philosopher’s Stone themselves, while Gavin agreed to watch Snape.

  • Gavin followed Quirrell toward the castle doors but was charged by Norbert outside Hagrid’s Hut and restrained him with a Transfigured chain.
  • Hagrid, Harry, Ron, and Hermione emerged and learned that Norbert had taken to Gavin, who asked Hagrid where the dragon egg came from.
  • Hagrid described the cloaked stranger who gave him the egg and admitted that Fluffy, the three-headed dog guarding something at Hogwarts, liked music.
  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione suspected Snape was after the Philosopher’s Stone, and Gavin advised them to write to Dumbledore while offering to watch Snape.
  • Dumbledore replied, “I trust Snape,” and Harry, Ron, and Hermione decided they would have to investigate on their own.

Ch. 49Forbidden Forest Showdown

Gavin followed Quirrell into the Forbidden Forest and tried to stop him from killing a Unicorn, but Voldemort’s power overwhelmed him. Hagrid’s arrival drove Quirrell away, and Gavin left injured with the Unicorn alive, resolved to prepare better for their next encounter.

  • Gavin tracked Quirrell from Hogwarts into the Forbidden Forest and followed him toward a Unicorn.
  • Quirrell bound the Unicorn and prepared to attack it, so Gavin cast spells to disrupt him and revealed his presence.
  • Quirrell unleashed a powerful blast that broke Gavin’s concealment and threw him against a tree.
  • Hagrid arrived with Fang, and Quirrell fled before he could reach the Unicorn.
  • Fang recognized Gavin and exposed his hiding place, so Gavin used the twins’ Dungbomb to distract Fang and Hagrid while escaping.
  • Gavin assessed his injuries at the forest’s edge and left after confirming that Quirrell had failed to kill the Unicorn.

Ch. 50Luck Still Counts When It Happens Three Times in a Row

Quirrell, pushed to his limit by Voldemort, was ordered to take the Philosopher's Stone, while Gavin helped Hufflepuff defeat Slytherin by preparing the team to exploit their focus on Cedric. After the victory, Gavin visited Cordelia and learned she had recently been sleeping unusually long, though he found no change in her condition.

  • Voldemort told Quirrell that his body would not last until June and ordered him to take the Philosopher's Stone that night.
  • Gavin warned Cedric that Slytherin would plan around his two quick Snitch catches, then agreed to coach the Hufflepuff team after Cedric brought the players to him.
  • Gavin trained Hufflepuff to exploit gaps in Slytherin's defense while Slytherin concentrated on containing Cedric.
  • Cedric feinted past the Slytherin Seeker and caught the Golden Snitch, giving Hufflepuff a 180-to-zero victory.
  • Ron and Hermione discussed Hufflepuff's success, while Harry watched Cedric as a rival to remember.
  • Gavin visited Cordelia, learned she had slept unusually long several times over two days, and reassured her that she would someday fly on a broomstick.

Ch. 51You Used to Be a Muggle Too. Can You Do It?

Gavin discovered that Quirrell had entered the forbidden room and agreed to help Harry, Ron, and Hermione stop him. A Hufflepuff celebration delayed Gavin, and when he finally checked the Marauder's Map again, the trio and Quirrell had disappeared, leaving him to rush after them.

  • Gavin used the Marauder's Map to confirm that Quirrell had entered the forbidden room while Dumbledore was away.
  • Gavin told Harry, Ron, and Hermione what he had seen, and they decided to stop Quirrell after Professor McGonagall refused to act.
  • Gavin went to the Hufflepuff common room for supplies but was stopped by students demanding to hear how he trained Cedric to find the Golden Snitch.
  • Gavin explained his mathematical model for predicting the Snitch's movements and left Cedric to answer the students' follow-up questions.
  • Gavin checked the map and found that Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Quirrell were no longer visible, so he grabbed his prepared bag and hurried out.

Ch. 52The Plot Went Off the Rails After All

Gavin reaches the chamber after Harry has used the potion needed to pass the black fire, then finds a way through and confronts Voldemort. After revealing that he survived the flames and helping Harry escape Quirrell, Gavin runs out of magic, but Harry’s touch burns Quirrell and the fight turns in their favor.

  • Gavin finds the black fire blocking the way and extinguishes it by giving a toad the purple potion and sending it through the Violet Flame Door.
  • Gavin enters the Mirror of Erised chamber as Voldemort demands the Philosopher’s Stone from Harry, then appears to burn to death in the black flames.
  • Quirrell binds Harry and attacks him, but Gavin sheds a shell of transfigured fabric and reveals that he survived the fire.
  • Gavin raises an Earthen Wall, blinds Quirrell with an intensified Lumos, disarms him, and frees Harry, but admits he has run out of magic.
  • Gavin urges Harry to fight Quirrell; when Quirrell grabs Harry’s wrist, his hand burns, and Harry clutches his scar as Gavin declares that events are back on track.

Ch. 53That wasn't Gavin's magic

Harry defeated Quirrell with the protection of his mother’s love, while Gavin recovered the Philosopher’s Stone and later explained his actions to Dumbledore. The chapter ended with Gavin asking for the Stone because he needed it to save Cordelia.

  • Harry held Quirrell and pressed his hands to Quirrell’s face until Quirrell died, while Voldemort’s remnant soul escaped and threatened Gavin before vanishing.
  • Gavin took the Philosopher’s Stone, and Dumbledore arrived; Gavin asked him not to destroy it and left with Dumbledore and the unconscious Harry.
  • Dumbledore told Harry that his mother’s sacrifice protected him from Quirrell, and Harry reunited with Hermione and Ron in the Hospital Wing.
  • At the Hufflepuff table, Gavin evaded Justin’s questions about the confrontation before Dumbledore summoned him to the Headmaster’s Office.
  • Gavin explained to Dumbledore how he had deduced the Stone’s location and entered the Dungeon, and Dumbledore said he no longer feared Gavin would become another Dark Lord.
  • Gavin asked Dumbledore for the Philosopher’s Stone, explaining that he needed it to save Cordelia.

Ch. 54Time Was Running Out for Gavin

Gavin persuaded Dumbledore to let him test whether the Philosopher’s Stone could help cure Cordelia’s Obscurus, even though the plan required Gavin to become an Obscurial again. As Gavin struggled to control the Stone, Cordelia learned she might have only a month to live and wrote asking him to visit.

  • Gavin proposed using the Philosopher’s Stone to alter Cordelia’s Consciousness Space and volunteered to become an Obscurial for the test.
  • Dumbledore agreed to help Gavin, with the condition that he would stop the attempt if it became dangerous.
  • Gavin began practicing with the Philosopher’s Stone in Dumbledore’s office, where his efforts made objects fly and tremble until Dumbledore ordered him to stop.
  • At St. Mungo’s, Healer Vittel told Cordelia that she might have about a month to live, and she asked him not to inform Dumbledore.
  • After waiting two weeks without hearing from Gavin, Cordelia wrote to him asking him to visit soon.

Ch. 55You're Abusing an Old Man

Gavin used the Philosopher's Stone to enter Dumbledore's Consciousness Space, where he could touch and manipulate Dumbledore's consciousness form but could not move it. Suspecting Dumbledore was simply too powerful for his current abilities, Gavin tested the toad's Consciousness Space and managed to shift its tiny consciousness form.

  • Gavin entered Dumbledore's Consciousness Space and found a giant version of Dumbledore beside an enormous whirlpool and the Alaya Consciousness river.
  • Gavin touched Dumbledore's consciousness form and changed its pose, but repeated attempts to move it failed.
  • Gavin spent another week testing different methods, then wondered whether Dumbledore's consciousness was too powerful for him to move.
  • Gavin rushed back to Dumbledore with his toad and proposed testing a weaker consciousness instead.
  • Gavin entered the toad's Consciousness Space and nudged its small gray-green consciousness form a short distance.

Ch. 56Miss Cordelia, It's Time

After succeeding in entering another person’s Consciousness Space, Gavin learned that Cordelia was near death and had been taken to the Department of Mysteries for Obscurus research. He reached St. Mungo’s as the Unspeakables prepared to take her away.

  • Gavin told Dumbledore that his consciousness had interfered with the experiment, then learned Dumbledore planned to find other test subjects.
  • Dibby arrived at Hogwarts and told Gavin that Cordelia had sent him a letter a week earlier.
  • Gavin found Cordelia’s letter and learned she would not survive the month and had chosen to donate herself to the Department of Mysteries.
  • At St. Mungo’s, Cordelia accepted restraints and prepared to leave with two Unspeakables.
  • Gavin rushed into the courtyard and shouted that Cordelia was not going anywhere.

Ch. 57I Did It

Gavin stopped the Unspeakables from taking Cordelia to the Department of Mysteries, and Dumbledore secured three days to respond to their demand. Gavin then revealed that his Philosopher’s Stone experiment proved his theory could save Cordelia, leaving her overwhelmed with hope.

  • Dumbledore arrived at St. Mungo’s and found Gavin standing between Cordelia and two Unspeakables who planned to take her for research.
  • Dumbledore persuaded the Unspeakables to leave Cordelia at St. Mungo’s for three days while he prepared a written response.
  • Gavin confronted Cordelia for agreeing to donate her body, and she kissed him and explained that she wanted to spare him further pain.
  • Gavin refused to let Cordelia give up her life, insisting she repay him in this one.
  • Gavin told Cordelia that the Philosopher’s Stone had helped him move a toad’s consciousness, proving he could change her connection to the Obscurus and save her.

Ch. 58By the Sea in Wales

Gavin and Dumbledore took Cordelia to a Welsh beach, where Gavin tried to draw her consciousness away from the Obscurus. The attempt unleashed dangerous dark magic, but Cordelia’s mother, Elizabeth Rowle, appeared in her Consciousness Space and stopped it.

  • Dumbledore flew Gavin and Cordelia to a remote beach on a Flying Carpet, where Gavin began entering Cordelia’s Consciousness Space with the Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Gavin found Cordelia beneath the black Whirlpool and pulled her forward, triggering a surge of her painful emotions and dark magic.
  • Cordelia’s silver bracelet shattered as black vapor erupted from her, and Dumbledore’s sealing spells failed to contain it.
  • Dumbledore trapped the dark magic beneath a silver dome, and the vapor eventually began retreating into Cordelia.
  • Inside the Consciousness Space, Cordelia attacked Gavin with dark magic until white light emerged from the Whirlpool and took the form of a woman.
  • The woman embraced Cordelia, stopped the attack, and introduced herself to Gavin as Elizabeth Rowle, Cordelia’s mother.

Ch. 59Elizabeth Rowle

Gavin met Elizabeth Rowle in Cordelia’s Consciousness Space and learned that her Love Magic had kept the Obscurus from killing her daughter. Elizabeth helped Gavin lead Cordelia toward her own Whirlpool, then vanished after asking him to tell Cordelia that she loved her; Cordelia woke healed, and Gavin told her the truth about her mother.

  • Elizabeth revealed that she had used Love Magic to protect Cordelia and keep the Obscurus from killing her.
  • Elizabeth said Gavin and the Philosopher’s Stone had helped Cordelia break free, and she could do no more to help.
  • Gavin and Elizabeth took Cordelia’s hands and led her away from the black Whirlpool toward Cordelia’s tiny white Whirlpool.
  • Elizabeth placed Cordelia’s hand in Gavin’s, asked him to pass on her loving message, and dissolved into starlight.
  • Cordelia woke beside Gavin and Dumbledore, felt healthy again, and thanked Gavin for saving her.
  • Gavin told Cordelia that her mother, Elizabeth Rowle, deserved most of the credit.

Ch. 60I Want to Learn

Gavin told Cordelia how her mother’s dying Love Magic had protected her from the Obscurus, and Dumbledore showed her the memory so she could hear Elizabeth Rowle’s words for herself. After Gavin found the Obscurus greatly diminished, Cordelia chose to learn magic, ending the chapter delighted by her first Lumos and the glowing sea it illuminated.

  • Gavin told Cordelia that Elizabeth Rowle’s Love Magic had protected her from the Obscurus and that her mother had never blamed her.
  • Dumbledore used Memory Replay to show Cordelia Gavin’s memory of Elizabeth’s final words, and Cordelia told her mother she loved her.
  • Gavin checked Cordelia’s Consciousness Space and found the Obscurus reduced to washbasin size while the white whirlpool had grown nearly as large as Dumbledore’s.
  • Cordelia said she wanted to learn magic so she could hear her mother’s voice again, and Gavin began teaching her Lumos.
  • Cordelia cast a dazzling Lumos that lit the bay and drew glowing fish toward the shore, and she said she was starting to like magic.
