Will's voice came from behind Ranrok, sending a chill down his spine. The boy should have been dead.
He sprang aside as if shocked and turned toward the voice. A short distance behind him stood Will, who should have been eaten away by the spell. Not a speck of dust marked his gray robe, and his silver-gray eyes gleamed with amusement.
Will had learned this trick from Grindelwald.
When Grindelwald had toyed with Corban Yaxley, he had used the play of light and shadow from Protego Diabolica to create a visual distortion, causing Yaxley's spell to miss.
Will had achieved the same effect another way: Transfiguration. His real body had never given away its position. What had fought Ranrok all along was something he had transfigured.
Will himself had remained hidden in the shadows.
Ranrok still had no idea what had happened. He watched Will warily. He didn't know how the boy had done it, but his skill was clearly formidable.
He went on full alert and signaled to his sole remaining subordinate. The goblin caught his meaning at once and edged sideways, apparently hoping to flank Will with him.
Will snapped his fingers. The stones and dust on the ground began to writhe, and Ranrok felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of dread.
The whole cavern trembled. Before Ranrok's eyes, the stones and dust twisted, sprouting long, thin arms and narrow heads.
Alarm bells rang in his mind as he watched the stones turn into shaggy werewolves!
"Ahh!" Ranrok's subordinate screamed.
Ranrok glanced back. A mass of liquid had trapped his subordinate, liquid that looked like flowing stone.
Meanwhile, a horde of werewolves charged Ranrok. He gritted his teeth, and the bracers on his arms glowed dark red.
It was no ordinary magical glow. It belonged to a different system
