Background / History

Hogwarts and the War Against Voldemort

Lupin was an excellent Hogwarts student who loved reading and learning, and served as Head Boy. He later fought against Voldemort before spending years wandering, struggling to find work because of his lycanthropy 67.

At school, he belonged to the friendship group formed with James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Their closeness did not always protect him: James carelessly mentioned his condition within earshot of others, while Sirius’s actions nearly caused Snape’s death and risked making Lupin responsible 240 546.

Meeting Will Behrens

Will encountered Lupin near an entrance to Knockturn Alley during the winter holiday. Carlo Gentus’s gang had sold Lupin a counterfeit “Werewolf Potion,” then threatened him with the poison it contained and demanded more money. Although already endangered, Lupin tried to protect Will; after Will stunned Carlo, Lupin defeated the remaining attackers and fled with him 46.

Lupin subsequently collapsed, and Will took him home and treated the poisoning. He intended to leave secretly to keep the boy safe from his next transformation, but Will persuaded him to remain as a tutor until the full moon on January 19 47.

A Stable Life in the Muggle World

Will suggested seeking Muggle employment and gave Lupin a business card for Green’s Bookshop. Lupin proved knowledgeable, efficient, and popular with customers, rising to manager within a few months. The position allowed him to approve his own full-moon leave, while his home’s basement provided somewhere to endure transformations safely 48 67.

The bookshop was his first steady job, and he continued working there even after accepting a Hogwarts appointment, planning to leave at the end of July. His employer, Mrs. Green, developed romantic feelings for him, which he struggled to address directly 181.

Returning to Hogwarts

Lupin initially declined Dumbledore’s offer to teach, fearing discovery, parental objections, and the trouble his condition could bring to the school. Harry’s reported death later drew him to Hogwarts in grief; learning that Harry was alive restored his hope and willingness to help 67 164.

Dumbledore renewed the offer, emphasizing both teaching and staying close to Harry. Access to an improved Wolfsbane Potion developed with Snape persuaded Lupin to accept. He succeeded Moody as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and received a warm welcome after protecting students from a Dementor on the train 165 192.

Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew

Lupin confronted Sirius in the Shrieking Shack believing him responsible for the Potters’ deaths and Peter’s murder. Sirius’s account—and his identification of Scabbers in the Weasley family photograph—forced Lupin to reconsider what he had believed for twelve years 249 250.

He concealed Sirius’s presence from Snape and later disarmed Hagrid when Hagrid attacked Sirius and refused to hear that he was innocent. After Peter’s capture, Lupin helped explain the painful history to Harry and Ron and welcomed Sirius’s official vindication 251 264 290 291.

Umbridge’s Campaign and the Cure

Umbridge targeted Lupin as a means of damaging Dumbledore’s reputation. Her plans included gathering evidence of his transformations or provoking an attack on a student so that he could be sent to Azkaban. Her surveillance eventually became so persistent that Lupin feared encountering her even in the toilets 521 555 561.

Will offered a dangerous procedure to remove Lupin’s werewolf form. Lupin accepted immediately, even knowing it might kill him. The prospect transformed his mood, and he privately resolved to protect Will during Voldemort’s return, even at the cost of his own life 561 562.

The procedure was scheduled for November 7, the same full-moon evening on which Ministry officials and reporters arrived to expose him. Despite severe pain during treatment, Lupin was subsequently found resting in human form under direct moonlight. Umbridge’s accusations collapsed, and Dumbledore later explicitly confirmed that Lupin was no longer a werewolf 565 569 572 576.

Werewolf Advocacy

Lupin asked Will to extend the treatment to others through the Werewolf Mutual Aid Association. He also taught at the association, which provided a Full Moon Room, practical support, and living allowances for werewolves willing to build independent lives 655 696.

After his three-year tenure as Hogwarts’s Defence professor, Lupin continued working with the werewolf community. At a Yorkshire farmhouse, he led an Order mission to a hostile group, stopped an escalating fight, and offered rehabilitation to those without criminal records who had harmed no one. He ordered that injured criminals receive treatment and be handed to the Ministry rather than killed 731 784 788.

Appearance

Lupin’s appearance changes sharply with his circumstances, from a destitute wanderer to a carefully dressed, scholarly gentleman 46 67.

  • Hair: Brown or light brown, initially messy and streaked with gray; later neatly combed 46 67.
  • Face: Sallow and lined, with scars that become nearly invisible during his more stable life 46 181 249.
  • Clothing: First seen in a thin, patched coat despite the December cold; later wears a neat bookshop uniform and respectable professor’s robes 46 67 249.
  • Glasses: Contribute to his academic appearance at the bookshop and Hogwarts 67 249.
  • Transformation-related exhaustion: Before his cure, full moons could leave him pale, disheveled, and visibly drained 164 208.

Personality

Lupin is gentle, conscientious, and strongly concerned with other people’s safety. His first instinct after Will saves him is to leave rather than risk hurting the child. He also objects when Will uses a Sleeping Charm on Mrs. Green, refusing to treat magic as a convenient solution to difficulties with Muggles 47 181.

Years of rejection leave him melancholy and fearful of becoming a burden. Even after gaining a stable home and employment, he finds security difficult to trust. His longing for an ordinary life makes him vulnerable to fraudulent cures and later willing to accept the potentially fatal reversal procedure 46 47 67 561.

As a mentor, he respects determination without endorsing self-destructive ambition. After seeing Will’s fear of mediocrity through a Boggart, he warns that relentless striving can become a burden and reminds him that friends and teachers are available to help 201.

His gentleness is not passivity. He can confront suspected betrayal with controlled fury and command a dangerous operation firmly enough that even Moody yields. He distinguishes innocent victims of lycanthropy from criminals, offering the former support while insisting the latter face justice 250 788.
