Sylvia belongs to the Corvus branch of the Lestrange family, which is comparatively accepting of Muggles and places little importance on blood purity. She distinguishes it from the blood-purist Radolphus branch and identifies Cyril as the family’s third branch. Although some Lestranges became Death Eaters, she describes those relatives as only distantly connected to her household 12 33.

Her family supported Dumbledore against Voldemort and faced attacks from other Lestranges because of it. Bellatrix subjected her grandfather Roy to the Cruciatus Curse; Dumbledore arrived in time to save him 42.
