Background / History

Lucius raises Draco to guard the Malfoy family’s public standing. After Draco mocks Harry Potter outside Flourish and Blotts, Lucius warns him that open hostility toward the wizarding world’s celebrated hero could invite questions about the family’s allegiance to Voldemort. He then seeks out Will Behrens and privately delivers a diary on Voldemort’s behalf. Believing Will to be Voldemort’s favored disciple, Lucius orders Draco to get along with him 68 69 70.

As Voldemort recovers, Lucius supplies him with expensive potions, carries letters to Will, monitors the Ministry, and helps turn officials against Dumbledore. He serves partly from fear and partly from the expectation that Voldemort’s rise will secure the Malfoys’ future 144 157 158. Malfoy Manor becomes a venue for Death Eater gatherings, where Lucius uses Will’s seating and introductions to mark his exceptional standing with Voldemort 184.

Lucius’s assignments grow more dangerous. He and Barty Crouch Jr. discover that the remains needed for Voldemort’s resurrection plan have been cremated and scattered 383. Later, Lucius directs an operation to ambush Harry, while privately offering Will rare potion ingredients and books in exchange for protecting Draco. He also tries to keep Draco away from another operation by arranging for him to remain at Hogwarts 505 580.

During Voldemort’s hunt for a mole, Lucius fears that suspicion of Will could implicate both him and Draco. After being unable to help Will at Azkaban, he delivers Voldemort’s soul-study materials and gives Will a Gringotts vault key as an apology, again asking him to protect his son 591 615. He later sends Draco to Will for help with an order to surveil Snape, unaware that Draco is reporting to Dumbledore 719 731.

Lucius has a pale face, gray eyes, and long white or platinum hair. He wears formal robes and carries a silver snake-head cane 68 383.

His loyalty to Voldemort is bound up with fear, self-preservation, and ambition for his family’s status 144 157.

His concern for Draco repeatedly overrides his pride. He humbles himself to ask Will for protection, sends Draco healing-magic books, and tries to shift the burden of Voldemort’s surveillance assignment onto someone he believes can handle it 505 528 731.
