Background / History
Rule of the Five Freaks
The Five Freaks sealed the sleeping Cihang Bodhisattva and took control of the city. Their regime manipulates faith, harvests humans, manufactures bodies, recycles souls, and eliminates potential resistance. Death does not free residents from the system 72.
According to Chen Feng’s knowledge, the Five Freaks have ruled for at least four thousand years. With ordinary residents living barely twenty years on average, he estimates that each citizen has undergone nearly two hundred reincarnations. He attributes the population’s exceptional cultivation potential to bodies tempered through repeated lifetimes 120.
Chen Feng’s Intervention
Chen Feng learns the city’s underlying conspiracy through Cihang Bodhisattva’s temporary Daily Intelligence System. She offers to repair one system for each designated enemy he kills, making his campaign against the rulers part of an effort to release her 72.
Their cooperation also strengthens Cihang herself. She takes over the Holy Cow Cult’s Dharma Protectors, recruits powerful yokai defeated by Chen Feng, and gains servants within the Underworld. Chen increasingly fears that defeating the existing rulers may simply allow a more dangerous power to emerge 103 127.
The “Gu Breeding” Era
Queen Mother’s death brings down the Artificial Sun and disrupts the sacrifices maintaining Cihang’s seal. Rather than abandon his home, Great Yokai proposes weakening the barrier and releasing monsters so that surviving residents become stronger—and therefore more valuable sacrifices 143.
The city loses order and essential supplies. Yokai feed openly in the streets, supernatural games kill residents, and enormous Flesh Monsters spread infectious blood mist. P.E.A.C.D. broadcasts that monsters have sealed off the city and are raising its population like livestock 144.
Within a year, six fighters become widely celebrated: the Swordsman, Jujutsu Sorcerer, Magical Girl, Half-Yokai, Savior, and Mu Hao. Chen Feng chooses not to restore Queen Mother, reasoning that the crisis could produce fighters capable of opposing both Great Yokai and Cihang 144.
Wider Conflict
The struggle expands beyond the city when Cihang attacks other universes and captures five of Chen Feng’s chat-group allies. Universe 42 becomes the destination of forces preparing to confront her, while Chen uses other worlds to gather strength and teammates 186 187 202.
Geography and Locations
- Extent: Leaving the urban area requires several bus transfers; reaching the mountain countryside involves further travel through counties and villages 68.
- Mountain districts: Northern Mountain District and South Mountain Residential Community are documented areas. Numerous underground facilities lie beneath the city’s mountain districts 140 154.
- Cihang Mountains: Chen Feng’s full-map technique reveals that the apparent and true Cihang Mountains are different locations 140.
- Cihang River: Located outside the city proper; it shelters an enormous Flesh Whale 154.
- Climate and lighting: July is sweltering under the prefabricated Artificial Sun. After its fall, the city is plunged into darkness 143 175.

Government and Population Control
The Five Freaks
| Ruler | Documented means of control |
|---|---|
| Bull Face | Operates through the Holy Cow Cult and rigs lottery shops to curse winners 72 80. |
| Great Yokai | Tampers with cultivation tribulations and later organizes the city’s survival-of-the-fittest sacrifice scheme 80 143. |

Manufactured Citizens
- Underground nurseries rapidly grow infants, after which Yakshas insert souls and Sappers feed them. The finished people are brainwashed and released into the city 140.
- Queen Mother’s facilities include numerous satellite bases and nested decoys. Her actual base contains substantially more nurseries, ten thousand elite soldiers, and four guards 140.
- The Spider Network shares information about deaths and targets’ movements, allowing coordinated pursuit 133.
- Spider Monsters conceal themselves within public institutions. Holy Water lets Zhang Ruobing perceive their true forms, including a spider-headed city official 132 133.
- Authorities value humans as resources: Hu Qing is ordered to capture Zhang rather than kill her because humans are useful and costly to maintain 133.
Cultivation and Power Restrictions
Spirit Energy
- Spirit Energy is exceptionally dense throughout Cihang City. The First Saint Demon Venerable compares it to the training rooms of the greatest sects in his own world 119.
- Abundant energy and unusually gifted residents do not guarantee successful cultivation: the rulers deliberately obstruct advancement 80 120.
Tampered Tribulations
- Great Yokai makes tribulation lightning strike as early as Qi Refining, with the force of a Nascent Soul tribulation 80.
- An elderly street sweeper is instantly killed while attempting Foundation Establishment 80.
- Li Guolong survives his Foundation Establishment tribulation by sacrificing six hundred years of lifespan through the Mysterious Tortoise Longevity Art 80.
- Chen Feng instead uses a cybernetic body built by Mr. Qipa to absorb the lightning and complete Foundation Establishment 119.
Nine-Bend Yellow River Formation
- A formation left by a multiversal god expels anyone stronger than Strong Nation-Burst Level from the city 210.
- Chen Feng experiences this repulsion after returning with Weak Continent-Burst Rank Battle Qi 210.
- Upgrading Happiness Internet Cafe allows it to withdraw into another dimension, providing a way to avoid expulsion 212.
- Number Zero initially identifies inanimate technology as a possible loophole, but his powerful mecha is also constrained and suffers from inadequate energy supplies 220.
Supernatural Threats
The Five Calamities
| Threat | Location / Behavior |
|---|---|
| Flesh Willow | Grows in the city center; its spreading branches hunt across Cihang City. Repeated reloads can restore prey and accelerate its growth 154 160. |
| Blood Storm / Flesh Kamaitachi | A moving storm roams villages outside the city. Almost nothing caught inside survives; witnesses report a parasitized Flesh Kamaitachi within it 154. |
| Flesh Whale | Enormous creature in the Cihang River. Chen Feng later uses meteor strikes in an attempt to flush it out 154 173. |
| Flesh Sandworm | Lives beneath the city and continually causes earthquakes 154. |
| Flesh Tyrant | Humanoid monster that hunts superhumans. A super-mutated specimen displays intelligence, extreme speed, and powerful regeneration 154 165. |
Blood Mist and Predation
- Mutated animals become gigantic crimson Flesh Monsters, including bus-length centipedes and bears as tall as two-story houses 144.
- Their corpses burst into difficult-to-disperse blood mist that obstructs sight and Divine Sense and infects those who inhale it 144.
- Residents also face parasitic Spider Monsters, free-roaming yokai, and supernatural tales that force participants into lethal games 144.
- A protected school demonstrates that barriers can exclude monsters and red mist while maintaining breathable air and an artificial light source 156.
Traps for Transmigrators
- The city contains traps specifically aimed at transmigrators, including the Demon Lord’s Hyperspace Hound 72.
- Transmigrators arrive one at a time through a failed rescue plan created by the now-dead God of Machines and God of Space for a world already destroyed by apocalypse 72.
- Powerful newcomers are targeted before they can become effective resistance. Chen Feng interprets Jiang Die’s disappearance after rapidly reaching Rank A as evidence of this practice 80.
- All five principal bosses possess mechanisms capable of defeating or bypassing resurrection 141.
The “Cihang Way”
Characters use “Cihang” as shorthand for a combat philosophy built around resurrection, concealed safeguards, deception, and refusing to leave an enemy merely physically dead 222 236 295.
Documented Lessons
- First lesson — Resurrection: Killing a body is not necessarily a victory; both Opinion Desire and the Jujutsu Sorcerer demonstrate this principle in other worlds 222 273.
- Third lesson — Kill body and soul: Chen Feng teaches Sika to prevent enemies from returning and conceals a slain vampire’s soul to obstruct investigation 295.
- Fourth lesson — Be cautious: The Savior’s rule is to act only when completely certain 331.
- Sixth lesson — Never trust a Cihang Native: Chen Feng openly invokes the rule after admitting he lied, and later applies it to the Savior’s own advice 329 331.
Common Practices
- Protect the true core: Opinion Desire advises an ally to leave his core elsewhere so that his body can reform after destruction; a soul attack subsequently bypasses that safeguard 240.
- Use false names: Great Yokai warns against sharing real names in Cihang City. Chen Feng and Sika later introduce themselves under other people’s names to redirect possible curses 65 321.
- Confirm the kill: Chen Feng searches the Logistics Master’s corpse and removes the chip that could allow survival 236.
- Avoid narrow builds: Proficiency rejects specialization and imposes training across all six attributes. India’s battle with Zhuge Liang likewise demonstrates that size, range, and endurance can overcome superior skill priority 256 286.
Trivia
- Chen Feng’s labels such as “Cihang 3.1” are informal designations for other universes contaminated by Cihang, not literal upgrades to the city. Mythic Three Kingdoms receives the 3.1 label 207.
- The Cihang Grand Theater bonus story places a reader in the city with five selected teammates. His knowledge of the novel fails to overcome Great Yokai’s foresight and the Hound’s ability to pursue resets 336.
