What could they do?
There were only a handful of them, and more than half were technical personnel with little combat ability. How could they fend off these frenzied Fallen Demon Beasts? The light of the formation protecting the entire camp flickered unsteadily, and no one knew how much longer it could hold. How were they supposed to hold out?
"What do we do?" someone asked in a trembling voice.
Once the defensive formation shattered, the Fallen Demon Beasts would flatten the camp in an instant, and all of them would fall prey to their jaws.
The squad leader gritted his teeth and singled out two men. "You two, come with me."
"What are you going to do?"
"Break out and get word to the others. The patrol isn't far away. If we break out, we can get the message to them."
"Break out? How? Even if all of us charged together, we might not make it out. How are three of you supposed to do it? Isn't that just throwing your lives away?"
"But if we don't try and stay here, we won't live long enough for the others to return either. We'll die all the same." The squad leader clenched his teeth so hard he seemed to taste blood. "The defensive formation won't hold. Sooner or later, the camp will fall. Our deaths are a small matter, but the newly built Teleportation Array absolutely cannot be destroyed! Don't forget our mission and our duty!"
They had come here to keep the camp safe, protect its technical personnel, and safeguard this precious undertaking that could change the situation in the Beast Abyss and the continent's future.
