So whoever had used those two Spell Arts should not have had a trace of Spiritual Power. Yet her proficiency was astonishing.

He turned his head and saw the person who must have saved him sitting by the window. Her head was tilted, and he had no idea what she was thinking. Her fingers deftly formed seals that sent spells toward him, but her gaze had long since gone vacant.

Sunlight poured through the window. Birds chirped as they hopped among the treetops, and a breeze stirred the leaves. A few fell, drifting back to the earth.

A shaft of sunlight slipped through the window lattice and landed on her cheek, where it seemed to dance.

Clean, beautiful, gentle, radiant.

Pei Ling's dark eyes held no light, but his fingers curled slightly. I want to destroy her.

Beautiful things should be torn apart bit by bit, until they bloom into colors even lovelier and more despairing.

The movement was slight, but Qiao Ranran noticed. She slowly came back to herself and met his gaze. His eyes were terrifying. Every time she looked into them, she felt as though darkness was about to swallow her, and her none-too-robust Divine Sense shook violently.

He was an almost impossibly handsome young man, yet his eyes held the despair of someone at the end of his life. If she had not known his cultivation was low, she might have suspected he was some ancient monster who had crawled out of the mountains.

Those eyes were a real problem, though.

"Awake?" Qiao Ranran calculated the time. The young man had woken early again. "Your internal and external injuries can be healed with time, but I can't do anything about the poison yet. I can use Silver Needles to seal it off for now, though. Until we find a cure, it shouldn't flare up easily. In short, I can't heal you completely, but you won't die anytime soon..."

The young man stared at her without expression.

Qiao Ranran kept chattering, heedless of his reaction, and said with a bright smile, "So, shall we talk about my fee and the cost of the medicine?"

When she had asked Doctor Tao to help wash the young man, she had discovered he was even poorer than she was. She did not have a storage bag, but at least she had a small bundle. Apart from his injuries, all he had was a set of ragged clothes.

The clothes had looked fairly well made, but they had been reduced to scraps. Even the apprentice would have found them too shredded to wipe down the cabinets.

"But for now, you'd better get some sleep." Having a grown person stare straight at her like that took all the satisfaction out of casting her Spell Arts.

As she spoke, she slipped a Silver Needle between her fingers. Reflected in the young man's dark eyes, it seemed to bring them a sudden glimmer of light.

Unfortunately, the needle never reached him. He raised a hand and caught her wrist, stopping her.

Qiao Ranran raised an eyebrow. She truly had not expected him to wake early, much less be capable of moving already. His hand was cold and steady, without a trace of the weakness a severely injured patient ought to have—because his grip hurt!

Again?

What was she supposed to do with her right hand pinned?

Simple. She still had her left!

Then he caught her left wrist too.

Qiao Ranran: "..." Well, this is awkward.

Losing consciousness was unpleasant. Pei Ling knew the woman before him and the Silver Needles in her hand had had a great deal to do with how easily he had passed out earlier. He would never give her another chance.

In that brief moment, many thoughts had crossed his mind. He thought of his greatest obsession from his previous life. Beyond the blood that could never be washed from the Pei Family, there was the fact that he had arrived too late. Regret and despair had drowned him, devouring him little by little through all those years he had been trapped in the Abyss.

He did not know what had happened after heaven and earth shattered in his previous life. He did not know why someone burdened with sins like his had been given a chance to turn back time, or even why he should go back to save the Pei Family when they were on the brink of death.

He only wanted to see the faces of those who had laid a trap and waited for him to walk into it when they discovered it had all been for nothing.

More than that, he wanted to see whether the despair on their faces when the world collapsed again would look the same as it had in his previous life.

"Hey!"

Qiao Ranran struggled, but the gap in their strength was too great. She could not break his hold. Sometimes being too good at Medicine was not a good thing. And their position was unbearably awkward: both her hands trapped, their eyes locked. No matter how she looked at it, it seemed wrong.

She did not know the young man's name, so she ventured, "Could you let go first?"

The young man silently released her.

Qiao Ranran sprang back out of reach and rubbed her bruised wrists with a sigh. Not only am I getting no fee for saving him, I'm coming out of this worse off.

When she turned, she found that he had already propped himself up. His deathly pale face showed no expression, and not even his eyes flickered. Yet a single glance made her ache for him. The bones throughout his body were broken. She had given him medicine, but too little time had passed, and her low-level Spell Arts did not work that quickly. His bones had not healed, so he would feel every bit of the pain.

Yet he not only sat up but took several steps. In the blink of an eye, he had reached the door.

He looked no different from an ordinary person.

She suddenly remembered how he had looked when she found him by the roadside. Even with injuries that severe, he had struggled onward. He must have had something important to do, somewhere he absolutely had to reach.

Qiao Ranran clicked her tongue and cast two more Spell Arts at him. "If you're leaving, at least wait until I finish the acupuncture. The poison isn't under control yet. You won't make it out of Clear Spring Town before it flares up."

The young man stiffened and stopped, bracing himself against the doorframe. Then he slowly turned. His empty gaze settled on Qiao Ranran's hand—or, more precisely, on the Silver Needle she held. Somehow, she understood what he meant.

She raised her hand in assurance. "Don't worry. I won't knock you out with it."

Worry? He did not trust her at all. This woman had appeared from nowhere. She had no cultivation, yet she wielded Spell Arts with practiced ease, and there was something strange about her Acupuncture Technique. He could feel that although his injuries had not improved much, they had been brought firmly under control.
