Dugu Bo led the group through the dense layers of Sunset Forest. The deeper they went, the thicker the mist grew. It carried a faint, sickly-sweet smell. It was poison mist.
Yang Wudi frowned and held his breath. Niu Gao and Bai He each circulated their Soul Power to ward off the poison. Zhu Zhuqing followed behind Lin Yuan, her face a little pale, but she gritted her teeth and said nothing.
Lin Yuan patted Little Moon on his shoulder. Little Moon vanished with a Teleportation and appeared on Zhu Zhuqing's shoulder the next instant, holding out a pill to her.
Zhu Zhuqing paused, then took it and slipped it into her mouth. A cool medicinal force slid down her throat, and most of the discomfort caused by the poison mist vanished at once.
Xuanwu Guga poked his head out of Lin Yuan's arms. Sensing the poison mist all around them, he drew his neck in. He jumped to the ground, opened his mouth, and breathed out a pale-blue curtain of water that formed a translucent shield around the group. The poison mist was shut out, and the air inside the shield instantly turned fresh.
Once he was done, Xuanwu Guga obediently ran to Zhu Zhuqing's feet and wrapped his two stubby little arms around her ankle.
"Guga."
Zhu Zhuqing looked down at him, then bent and picked him up. Xuanwu Guga curled into a ball in her arms and nuzzled against her in comfort.
Dugu Bo glanced back. When he saw the curtain of water the little fellow in Zhu Zhuqing's arms had produced, a strange look flashed across his face.
They passed through the last bank of obscuring mist, and the view suddenly opened up.
A valley ringed by lush vegetation appeared before them. The air inside was far fresher than outside; an invisible barrier kept the poison mist at bay. Sunlight slipped through gaps in the canopy and fell across the valley's center.
Half the spring was icy blue and bone-chilling, with bitter cold rising from its surface and a thin layer of frost coating the surrounding rocks. The other half was crimson and scalding, steam billowing from it until even the air warped in the heat. The two waters met in a single spring, one half icy blue and the other crimson. They did not mix, yet existed side by side, forming a natural wonder of ice and fire.
The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well.
All around the spring grew strange flowers and herbs, shimmering with color. Some were as clear as carved crystal, some glowed with flowing blue light, and some bore golden droplets on their petals—every single one was a treasure that would drive the Soul Master World mad if taken outside.
Little Moon sat on Lin Yuan's shoulder, gazing at the wondrous sight.
"So pretty, guga!"
In Zhu Zhuqing's arms, Xuanwu Guga stared at the glittering Medicine Garden.
"Shiny, guga."
Drooling, Guga ran toward the flowers.
"So many pretty flowers! Can I eat them, guga?"
Yang Wudi's expression froze.
He stood rooted to the spot, his gaze sweeping from one Immortal Herb to the next. His mouth hung slightly open, and his whole body seemed locked in place. Then he walked forward, step by step, faster and faster, until he was nearly running. He rushed up to a purple ganoderma and crouched. His trembling fingers reached toward it, then stopped in midair, afraid he might damage it.
"Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma... This is Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma..." His voice shook. "Is that Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng? Fuck, look at the quality... That's Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, and this is Serene Fragrance Silkweed..."
He spoke faster and grew more agitated with every word. At last, he dropped to his knees, his eyes red and his voice so hoarse he could barely speak. "In my whole damn life... In my whole damn life, I've never seen so many top-grade medicinal herbs..."
Dugu Bo stood nearby and snorted at the sight of him. "What's all the fuss? They're just pretty weeds."
Yang Wudi whipped his head around and glared at him. "You call these weeds?!"
The shout stunned Dugu Bo for a moment. Then his face darkened. "What else would I call them? I've lived here for years. Aside from their colors, I've never seen anything special about them."
Yang Wudi's mouth twitched. He drew a deep breath, decided the man wasn't worth talking to, and turned back to study the Immortal Herbs.
Lin Yuan stood beside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and looked around at the shimmering Immortal Herbs. Then he turned to Dugu Bo.
"You've guarded this Medicine Garden for years, yet you don't recognize a single Immortal Herb."
Dugu Bo's face darkened.
"If you'd recognized even one of them, you would've cured your poison long ago." A trace of mockery entered Lin Yuan's voice. "And you wouldn't be stuck as a level ninety-two Titled Douluo."
Dugu Bo fell silent.
Because he truly didn't recognize them. He had known only that the herbs looked pretty. Sometimes he picked a few to steep in wine and felt they helped his cultivation a little, but he had never imagined they could cure his poison. He had consulted countless renowned physicians and tried countless methods, all without success. Never had he imagined that he had been guarding a mountain of treasure while begging for food outside it.
"You're saying these plants can cure my poison?" Dugu Bo asked in a low voice, unable to hide his doubt.
"You don't need them to cure it." Lin Yuan lifted his chin toward a golden fruit growing not far from the spring. "Look over there."
The fruit was golden all over, its surface covered in fine, overlapping patterns like dragon scales that gleamed faintly in the sunlight. Its broad, thick leaves shone like jade. One half absorbed cold, the other heat, and a halo of intertwined blue and red light flowed across them.
"Earth Dragon Golden Melon." Yang Wudi followed Lin Yuan's gaze, his voice rising. "That thing can completely reshape a serpent Martial Soul. If it's absorbed properly, a Jade Phosphor Serpent might even evolve into a Jade Phosphor Dragon—or something greater."
Dugu Bo frowned.
One medicinal plant could fix the flaw in his Martial Soul that had plagued him for decades?
He had searched for half his life, visited countless renowned physicians, and tried method after method. He had tried everything, and nothing had worked. Now a teenager was telling him that a single melon in the Medicine Garden he had guarded all these years could solve it all?
"Why should I believe you?" Dugu Bo's voice turned cold.
He opened his mouth, and a jade-green Core Pearl slowly emerged, hovering over his palm. Dark light moved across its surface, and it gave off a suffocating stench. This was the Core Pearl formed by his Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor, containing nearly half his power.
"Swallow it," Dugu Bo said in a low voice. "This is my Core Pearl. If you try anything, I'll detonate it inside you. Even a Titled Douluo wouldn't survive."
He flicked his hand, sending the Core Pearl into Lin Yuan's arms.
Lin Yuan looked down at the stinking Core Pearl against his chest. His mouth twitched. He picked it up and tossed it back to Dugu Bo.
"You want me to swallow something you spat out of your mouth?"
Dugu Bo's face went black. "You—"
"A Martial Soul Oath." Lin Yuan cut him off. "I, Lin Yuan, swear upon my Martial Soul: if I bear you the slightest ill will, or if the Earth Dragon Golden Melon harms you, may my Martial Soul shatter, my Soul Power be utterly destroyed, and may I die a wretched death."
The moment he finished speaking, an invisible ripple rose from his body and vanished into the void.
The Martial Soul Oath was sealed.
Dugu Bo froze.
He hadn't expected the kid to actually dare swear it.
Yang Wudi stepped forward and said solemnly, "I, Yang Wudi, swear upon the Martial Soul of the Breaking Clan: if the Earth Dragon Golden Melon harms you, the Breaking Clan and I shall share the consequences of this oath."
Niu Gao stepped forward too. "I, Niu Gao, swear upon the Martial Soul of the Defense Clan. The same oath."
Bai He spread his wings. "I, Bai He, swear upon the Martial Soul of the Speed Clan. The same oath."
Three invisible ripples vanished into the void, one after another.
Dugu Bo looked at the people before him, his expression shifting.
He thought of how he had only a few years left to live. He thought of his son and daughter-in-law, whose lives the curse of their Martial Souls had stolen while they were still young. He thought of Yanyan, still so young herself, and how she would follow the same path if he could not solve this.
At last, he gritted his teeth, seized the Earth Dragon Golden Melon, and sat cross-legged beside the spring.
"I'll trust you this once."
He bit into the Earth Dragon Golden Melon. Golden juice ran down the corner of his mouth, and a vast medicinal force erupted inside him. Dugu Bo grunted. Soul Power surged wildly around him, and the phantom of his Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor rose behind him. Its body twisted violently, as though undergoing an agonizing transformation.
Yang Wudi glanced at him and saw that he would need time to absorb it. Leaving him alone, Yang Wudi turned to preparing medicine. He took out the Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng and Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, then retrieved several supplementary ingredients from his Soul Tool. Finding a flat rock beside the spring, he began mixing the medicine.
Guga waddled through the Medicine Garden. He lowered his head to sniff one Immortal Herb, sneezed, then went to sniff another.
Yang Wudi caught sight of him out of the corner of his eye and shouted without looking up, "Don't step on the Immortal Herbs!"
Guga shrank his neck in fright and covered his head with his little hands. He waddled back to Lin Yuan's feet and crouched there, looking up at him with a pitifully innocent face.
Lin Yuan looked down and nudged his backside with a foot. "Serves you right. That's what you get for running around."
Mist from the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well mingled in the air.
