Background / History

Grindelwald was expelled from Durmstrang before meeting Albus Dumbledore in Godric’s Hollow during the summer of 1899. The two shared ambitions to locate the Deathly Hallows, overturn the International Statute of Secrecy, and establish a global order led by powerful witches and wizards. Their relationship became romantic, though it was not accepted by society. 3 32 37

After the pair fell out, Grindelwald launched the Global Wizarding War. His followers spread across Europe and America, and his crimes earned him recognition as one of history’s most powerful Dark Wizards. Dumbledore defeated him in the Alps in 1945, ending the war. 3 31 32

Following his defeat, Grindelwald spent forty-five years imprisoned in Nurmengard. Before or around his defeat, he arranged for Kyle—a magical creation made using both his and Dumbledore’s genes—to be hidden in a safe house, later giving Dumbledore the address. 26 29 31

Seeing the name “Kyle Dumbledore” in a newspaper prompted Grindelwald to leave Nurmengard. He soon reunited with Kyle, accepted him as his son, and began personally teaching him combat magic, Dark Arts, and magical theory. 26 29 33

Appearance

Grindelwald is an elderly but still handsome wizard with a mischievous manner and a distinctive pair of mismatched eyes shared by Kyle. After recovering from the malnutrition of his imprisonment, he regrows a full head of white hair. 26 264 265

  • One eye is deep brown-black; the other is an eerie pale white. 264
  • He has completely white hair and an aged yet refined appearance. 264
  • He wears a silver Deathly Hallows pendant, the personal symbol of his former ambitions with Dumbledore. 37
  • During battle, he surrounds himself with ethereal blue Fiendfyre and can manifest grand magical armor. 594

Personality

Grindelwald is proud, calculating, and openly competitive with Dumbledore. He considers himself exceptionally knowledgeable in elemental magic, frequently belittles Dumbledore’s expertise, and takes satisfaction in provoking him. 33 73 112

Despite his ruthless reputation, he is deeply affectionate and protective toward Kyle. He takes personal responsibility for Kyle’s education, gifts him magical creatures, investigates attacks against him, and treats threats to Kyle as obstacles to be removed. 33 110 302 306

He remains committed to his old revolutionary ideals, particularly wizarding supremacy and the rejection of the Statute of Secrecy. However, his priorities increasingly center on ensuring Kyle’s growth, safety, and eventual succession. 73 306 618

Abilities & Skills

Fiendfyre Mastery

Grindelwald wields ethereal blue Fiendfyre with exceptional precision and destructive power. His flames can function as barriers, autonomous attacks, cavalry formations, wings, and components of larger constructs. 464 594 675

  • Creates the offensive Fire Shield Protection, commonly called the “Grindelwald Gas Stove.” 464
  • Summons a four-hundred-knight Fiendfyre cavalry to assault Voldemort. 675
  • Uses Fiendfyre to form wings, armor, and a path of flame during Kyle’s summoning. 593 594
  • His Fiendfyre is stated to surpass Voldemort’s in direct confrontation. 464

Elemental Magic and Attribute Conversion

Grindelwald is among the few modern wizards to master true elemental magic and considers himself its foremost researcher. He teaches Kyle that magical power can be perceived and converted into elemental or dark attributes. 112

  • Uses curse magic to teach the perception and conversion of magical power. 112 113
  • Developed Shadow Burn specifically for Kyle, converting neutral magic power into dark-attributed magic that erodes targets. 113
  • Identifies the practical limits of Voldemort’s Death God Cloak by observing that it cannot fully negate magic’s secondary effects. 675

Susanoo and Large-Scale Combat Magic

After observing Kyle’s Susanoo, Grindelwald reproduces the technique through his own magical mastery. His version can reach nearly one hundred meters in height. 306

  • Combines Susanoo with Fiendfyre armor and weather magic. 675
  • Merges his Susanoo with a Thunder Beast, gaining lightning-based weaponry. 676
  • Conjures and directs Kirin, a massive lightning beast drawn from storm clouds. 675
  • Forms a Blood Oath with Dumbledore to merge their magic and combine an armored Susanoo with Dumbledore’s Thousand-Hand Great Buddha. 665

Leadership and Saint Summoning

Grindelwald commands the Saints, a longstanding network of loyal followers identifiable by the Deathly Hallows symbol. His signature method of calling them is a black, semi-transparent veil sweeping across an entire city. 241 304

  • Reassembles his followers after escaping Nurmengard. 26 304
  • Commands the assault that incapacitates the French Ministry of Magic and snaps the wands of its personnel. 284 285
  • Seals the American Magical Congress headquarters and takes thousands hostage after war is declared against him. 306
  • Orders the Saints to use the Imperius Curse to seize control of key Muggle governments after the Statute of Secrecy fails. 618

Combat Analysis

Grindelwald is regarded as one of the most experienced and composed combatants in the Magical World. Voldemort judges him slightly superior in magical attainment and likely the strongest active fighter in combat experience and tactical planning. 464

  • Orders the Wizard Alliance to retreat when ordinary wizards can no longer safely participate in the battle. 675
  • Maintains contingency plans and stays calm under coordinated enemy attacks. 464

Life-Force Transfer

When Dumbledore is critically wounded, Grindelwald uses a final contingency to transfer his own spirit and vitality into Dumbledore’s body. The act revives Dumbledore but kills Grindelwald. 689

  • Manifests a golden projection of himself to merge with Dumbledore. 689
  • Continues supplying life force through a golden ribbon connecting their bodies until his death. 689
