Ch. 281Exposed!

Plot points and events

  • Li Xiang realizes the Netherworld authorities are searching for the six living-world prodigies after someone exposed them. He suspects Tian Yan, whose demonic arts and past dealings with Netherworld factions could have helped him secure protection in exchange for information.
  • At the Bone Cavern Tavern, a ghost general uses a Netherworld Soul-Seeking Mirror to identify living beings. Li Xiang knows the mirror will expose his hidden pure-yang energy, so he sets a trap: he plants a trace of that energy on a large evil ghost, diverting the search party’s attention.
  • While the tavern erupts into chaos, Li Xiang silently breaks through a weakened section of the bone wall and escapes. The ghost general discovers the decoy too late and orders a citywide search.
  • Li Xiang navigates Wangsi City’s alleys and evades patrols, then returns to the group’s concealed bone house. He warns the others that they have been betrayed and that the city is being searched for them.
  • Li Xiang reports that the newly enthroned Yin Tianzi plans to build a Golden Bridge of Naihe at the Yin-Yang Boundary River, opening a route to the living world. The Red-Rumped Yama’s vanguard is gathering there.
  • With their hideout likely to be discovered, Li Xiang proposes that the six attack the bridgehead when the bridge opens and the boundary is weakest. The group unanimously agrees.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang demonstrates sharp deduction, composure, and resourcefulness, using a decoy, stealth, and his knowledge of the tavern’s structure to escape detection. He returns as the group’s decisive leader.
  • Tian Yan is identified as the likely traitor: Li Xiang believes he exchanged details about the six for a chance to survive in the Netherworld.
  • The others—Guo Kai, Lin Xuanshu, Chu Tian, Tang Hua’an, and Miao Xiyue—are tense and prepared to fight when Li Xiang returns. Once he explains the betrayal, their fear turns to anger and resolve. Chu Tian independently echoes Li Xiang’s suspicion of Tian Yan, while Lin Xuanshu urges taking the initiative.
  • The group’s trust in Li Xiang is clear: despite the danger of his plan, all accept it as their only chance to escape.

Significant themes

  • Betrayal and self-preservation: Tian Yan’s suspected deal reflects the ruthless logic of sacrificing others to secure one’s own survival.
  • Cunning over force: Li Xiang survives through deception, observation, and precise movement rather than direct combat.
  • Solidarity under pressure: The six turn a desperate situation into a shared plan, choosing to face danger together rather than wait to be hunted.
  • Hope through risk: The Golden Bridge offers a possible route home, but reaching it requires a near-suicidal assault.

Ch. 282It was him!

Key plot points and events

  • Li Xiang rallies the group to escape Wangsi City by infiltrating the Netherworld army. He assigns roles: Lin Xuanshu and Guo Kai will conceal their powerful living qi; Tang Hua’an will break the enemy line with his spear; Chu Tian will locate the Golden Bridge of Naihe’s spatial core; Miao Xiyue and Dabao will sow chaos with poison; Li Xiang will disguise them all as ghost soldiers.
  • Before they can leave, Li Xiang’s danger-sensing technique, Dabao, Tang’s spear, and the others all react to an overwhelming presence outside. A stranger enters the hut without triggering Li Xiang’s Feng Shui defenses and seals the group off from the rest of the city.
  • The stranger’s power is so immense that Chu Tian cannot perceive his form, and Li Xiang warns everyone not to look. Li Xiang nevertheless recognizes the figure as his senior brother, Qin Zhong.
  • Qin Zhong suppresses his imperial aura and confirms his identity. The group’s terror gives way to relief and disbelief. He explains that he sensed Li Xiang’s living blood qi and nearly crushed them by accident with the Netherworld’s Imperial Qi.
  • Li Xiang teases Qin Zhong about becoming ruler of the Netherworld. Qin Zhong, exhausted and bitter, rejects the idea that he chose the role, removes his Pingtian Crown, and says he had no choice.
  • The chapter ends with Li Xiang asking how Qin Zhong fell into the Netherworld and became its Yin Tianzi. The others gather to hear his account, which remains untold.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang leads with composure and tactical care, coordinating the escape plan. Even under Qin Zhong’s crushing authority, he steps forward to shield his companions and addresses him as “Senior Brother,” showing both courage and deep trust.
  • Qin Zhong appears transformed into a near-divine ruler, yet his familiar, irreverent complaints reveal that his old personality survives. Beneath his authority, he is weary and resentful of his unwanted position.
  • The companions begin the chapter confident and eager for battle, then are rendered helpless by Qin Zhong’s presence. Their varied reactions—Chu Tian’s bloodied effort to see him, Tang’s frozen spear hand, Lin’s collapse with relief, and Guo’s blunt disbelief—underline the shock of the reunion.
  • Li Xiang and Qin Zhong’s teasing, familiar exchange restores warmth after the terrifying confrontation and confirms their bond.

Significant themes

  • Power and vulnerability: Qin Zhong’s immense authority threatens the group simply by existing, while Li Xiang’s courage lies in standing up to it for his friends.
  • Identity amid transformation: Though Qin Zhong has become the Netherworld’s ruler, his speech and habits remain recognizably his own.
  • Duty and lack of choice: Qin Zhong’s bitter response suggests that his elevation to power was forced, not desired.
  • Loyalty and fellowship: The group’s coordinated plan and Li Xiang’s protective response show the trust forged through shared danger.

Ch. 283See It Through to the End!

Chapter Summary: “A Beginning and an End!”

Key plot points and events

  • Qin Zhong reveals that, although Li Xiang and the others believed they spent less than half a month in the Azure Dragon Cavern, six months passed in the living world. Li Xiang explains that the collision of the cavern’s laws, the Netherworld, and the living world distorted time.
  • During those six months, the Commander-in-Chief unified much of the realm, secured the South’s formal surrender, and became emperor after holding the Nine Tripods Heaven-Sacrifice Ceremony.
  • Qin Zhong explains that the Ghost Calamity was never truly defeated. On the day the new emperor took the throne, Black Sky Lord triggered a hidden Yellow Springs passage beneath Riverside. Millions of ghosts poured into Linjiang County and massacred its defenders.
  • Qin Zhong died fighting at the gates of the Shocking Heron Martial Hall. He awoke in the deepest Netherworld, seated on the White Bone Throne, where the ghost clans hailed him as their ruler.
  • Qin Zhong learns that his birth amid supernatural omens and his great-grandmother’s actions made him the vessel chosen to become the Yin Tianzi, the Netherworld’s counterpart to the living emperor. His death activated this fate.
  • Despite inheriting the Yin Tianzi’s power and Netherworld karma, Qin Zhong refuses to surrender his humanity. He proposes a dangerous plan: Li Xiang must find and awaken an Innately Immaculate Body hidden in his great-grandmother’s tomb. Working from both worlds, they will use the Yin-Yang Reversal Technique to sever Qin Zhong’s bond to the Netherworld and return his soul to life.
  • Li Xiang agrees to undertake the mission.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang reacts to the time discrepancy with reasoned analysis, then presses Qin Zhong to explain his death and identity. He distinguishes the man from the cosmic role imposed on him and ultimately supports his plan.
  • Qin Zhong reveals the grief of his death and the immense burden of becoming the Yin Tianzi. Though he now commands the Netherworld, he remains fiercely himself and chooses the uncertain possibility of returning to human life.
  • Guo Kai, Tang Hua’an, Lin Xuanshu, Chu Tian, and Miao Xiyue are stunned by the passage of six months, the emperor’s ascension, and the destruction of Riverside. Their reactions underscore the scale of the losses.

Significant themes

  • Time and displacement: A brief passage through another realm has cost the group half a year in the world they left behind.
  • Fate versus free will: Heaven and earth have assigned Qin Zhong a cosmic role, but he refuses to accept it as the sum of his identity.
  • Humanity and power: Qin Zhong values being human over ruling the Netherworld.
  • Sacrifice and loyalty: Qin Zhong died defending his home; Li Xiang now accepts a perilous mission to help save him.
  • Political and supernatural upheaval: The emperor’s rise and the Ghost Calamity are presented as forces reshaping both the living world and the Netherworld.

Ch. 284The First-Generation Yin Tianzi!

Key events and plot

  • Qin Zhong explains that, during the six months the group has been trapped in the Netherworld, a coalition of monsters, Demonfolk, ghosts, and Western powers has overrun the three northern provinces. The Commander-in-Chief’s newly restored Great Xin Dynasty was forced to retreat south of the Yangtze; the south is now humanity’s last refuge.
  • The Netherworld plans to invade through Demon City. Its forces intend to seize City God Headquarters, break its seals, and unleash the vengeful spirits beneath it. Their resentment and yin energy could cancel the south’s protective laws and turn Demon City into a ghostly foothold.
  • The invasion is set for three days hence, when the Golden Bridge of Naihe opens. Qin Zhong promises to create a three-breath opportunity for Li Xiang’s group during the assault.
  • Qin Zhong reveals that the Yin Tianzi’s power is consuming him. He retains clarity for only one shichen a day; otherwise, the throne’s laws overwhelm his humanity and drive him to kill. He leaves before losing control.
  • The group considers using the Yin-Yang Reversal Technique to restore Qin Zhong to life. Lin Xuanshu judges it theoretically possible but gives it less than a one-in-ten chance of success. Tang Hua’an insists that even those odds are worth taking.
  • Chu Tian reveals that the First Emperor survived his failed attempt at ascension, followed the broken Dijiang Dragon Vein into the abyss, and became the founder of the Netherworld: the First-Generation Yin Tianzi.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qin Zhong shows both resolve and compassion: despite becoming a ruler of the Netherworld, he risks himself to deliver critical intelligence and withdraws to protect the others from his loss of control.
  • Li Xiang responds to the catastrophe with practical resolve, focusing on the coming battle and the possibility of saving Qin Zhong rather than giving in to despair. He shelters the group and leads their discussion.
  • Guo Kai is shaken by the fall of the north and fears for his grandfather, who may have died defending Linjiang City.
  • Tang Hua’an openly admires Qin Zhong’s endurance and supports the dangerous revival plan.
  • Lin Xuanshu offers a cautious, technical assessment of the resurrection method, emphasizing its extreme risks.
  • Chu Tian moves from silence to a pivotal revelation, using his Double Pupils to uncover a hidden truth about the Netherworld’s origin.

Significant themes

  • Humanity versus power: Qin Zhong’s struggle to retain his compassion shows the cost of wielding overwhelming supernatural authority.
  • Sacrifice and loyalty: He accepts immense personal danger to help his comrades and preserve hope for the living world.
  • Hope amid near-impossible odds: The revival plan is perilous, but the group weighs whether a slim chance is still worth pursuing.
  • Hidden history and the nature of rebellion: The revelation that the First Emperor founded the Netherworld reframes its origins as the consequence of defiance against Heaven.
  • Collective survival: The coming conflict threatens not just individuals but humanity’s remaining homeland and traditions.

Ch. 285A bold conjecture!

Key plot points and events

  • Chu Tian reveals that Qin Shi Huang—the First Emperor—became the first Yin Tianzi after dying. He tried to return to the living world by sending his soul upstream through the Yin-Yang Boundary River into a body prepared from the Twelve Golden Figures in his mausoleum.
  • The Heavenly Dao destroyed his soul and preparations with a lightning tribulation. Though he failed, his attempt proves that reversing yin and yang and escaping the Netherworld is theoretically possible—the same approach Qin Zhong is pursuing to escape the white-bone throne.
  • Li Xiang argues that Qin Zhong may have a better chance than the First Emperor: he is only a half-formed Yin Tianzi, and his ties to the Netherworld’s rules are less firmly established. Li Xiang commits to helping him despite the odds.
  • Privately, Li Xiang suspects Qin Zhong may be connected to the First Emperor—perhaps a remnant of his true spirit or a long-prepared vessel for his return. He keeps the theory to himself, deciding that Qin Zhong is his senior brother regardless of his origins.
  • The next day, Li Xiang organizes a backup plan for the group’s escape. They will leave that night and wait near the Yin-Yang Boundary River, rather than relying entirely on Qin Zhong’s promise to create an opening when the Golden Bridge of Naihe appears three nights later.
  • Li Xiang assigns roles: Lin Xuanshu and Miao Xiyue will prepare hidden formations and poison miasma to distract pursuers; Guo Kai and Tang Hua’an will break through the ghost army; Chu Tian will use his Double Pupils to locate weaknesses in enemy formations.
  • Before the group departs, Li Xiang disguises himself as a sickly ghost and slips back into the Bone Cavern Tavern, despite the citywide manhunt. He wants to investigate the “Great Sage Wine,” which appears to contain fragments of the Reincarnation Law and gave him a vision of his family’s past.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang moves from shock at Chu Tian’s revelation to firm resolve. His loyalty to Qin Zhong outweighs his growing suspicion about Qin Zhong’s identity, and he keeps that dangerous possibility secret to protect the group’s morale. He also takes command by turning the group’s strengths into a practical escape plan.
  • Qin Zhong, though absent from the chapter’s action, remains central: he has promised to create an opening, but his limited periods of consciousness and the Yin Tianzi Rules make that promise uncertain.
  • Chu Tian shares the First Emperor’s history despite the apparent strain that uncovering the secret places on his soul. He then accepts a forward role in the planned breakthrough.
  • Guo Kai, Tang Hua’an, Lin Xuanshu, and Miao Xiyue recover and follow Li Xiang’s leadership. Their willingness to act reflects their desperation and trust in one another.
  • The group’s discussion shifts from confronting an overwhelming secret to cooperating on concrete roles, while Li Xiang’s private suspicions remain undisclosed.

Significant themes

  • Defying fate and Heaven: The First Emperor’s failed attempt establishes that escape from the Netherworld may be possible, but carries catastrophic risks.
  • Identity and loyalty: Li Xiang chooses to treat Qin Zhong as his brother rather than define him by a potentially terrifying ancient identity.
  • Hope balanced by contingency: The group hopes Qin Zhong can help, but prepares to survive without depending on him.
  • Secrecy and sacrifice: Li Xiang conceals his suspicion to preserve the others’ resolve and undertakes a dangerous investigation alone.
  • Karma and the past: The wine’s connection to reincarnation and Li Xiang’s family vision suggest that his own history is entangled with larger supernatural forces.

Ch. 286Equal-to-Heaven Great Sage!

Key plot points and events

  • Li Xiang returns to the Bone Cavern Tavern while ghost soldiers hunt him through Wangsi City. The tavern has been mysteriously restored and is open, but its usual staff and customers are gone.
  • He senses the tavern is cut off from the Netherworld’s Death Qi, yet enters, disguised as a frail old ghost.
  • The blind-looking old Ghost Ape recognizes him immediately and offers him Great Sage Wine. Li Xiang refuses at first, noting that his previous cup contained fragments of reincarnation’s laws and showed him memories that were not his.
  • The Ghost Ape reveals that the wine is made from a monkey’s Obsessive Thought—not, as the city’s ghosts believe, ordinary ingredients blessed by the Red-Rumped Yama.
  • The old keeper uses the Fiery Golden Eyes and asks whether Li Xiang knows the Equal-to-Heaven Great Sage. Li Xiang identifies him as the Victorious Fighting Buddha, a legendary figure who reached the supreme realm of Illuminating the Heavens.
  • The Ghost Ape challenges the celebrated account of the Buddha’s enlightenment: he says the Great Sage severed and discarded parts of himself to attain Buddhahood. His violent Monkey Nature and Evil Thought became the Red-Rumped Yama, while his Benevolent Thought formed the Buddha.
  • The tavern keeper explains that he is another discarded fragment: the Great Sage’s regret and longing for his lost past. He has spent ages making the true Great Sage Wine from that lingering memory.
  • The Ghost Ape urges Li Xiang to drink again, claiming that the wine can help him complete the vision from the previous night and discover his own destiny.
  • Li Xiang recalls the vision: his family’s estate burning, his father fighting overwhelming enemies, his mother weeping, and Li Zhong escaping through a tear in space with infant Li Xiang. The revelation that his past involves a vast blood feud and powerful inheritance has left him desperate for answers.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang remains cautious and composed despite the danger, but the revelations strike at his deepest uncertainties. He recognizes that unresolved questions about his origins could undermine his future cultivation.
  • The old Ghost Ape shifts from an enigmatic wine seller to a sorrowful witness to the Great Sage’s lost humanity. His account is defiant toward the Red-Rumped Yama and mournful about the memories and attachments discarded for Buddhahood.
  • Their conversation is a tense exchange of scrutiny and disclosure: Li Xiang questions the wine and the keeper’s identity, while the Ghost Ape tests Li Xiang’s understanding and offers him a chance to confront his own past. The chapter ends as Li Xiang prepares to respond, leaving his decision about the wine unresolved.

Significant themes

  • The cost of transcendence: The Great Sage’s path to Buddhahood required severing not only evil but also rebellion, regret, and attachment.
  • Identity and fragmentation: The Red-Rumped Yama, the Buddha, and the old Ghost Ape are presented as different remnants of one being, raising questions about what makes a person whole.
  • Memory, longing, and karma: The wine carries the weight of past lives and discarded memories, linking personal history to spiritual destiny.
  • Truth versus legend: The keeper’s account contradicts the revered public story of the Victorious Fighting Buddha’s enlightenment.
  • The need to face one’s past: Li Xiang’s hidden origins are no longer a distant mystery; understanding them may be essential to his strength and future path.

Ch. 287Seeking His Roots and Ancestors!

Chapter Summary

  • Li Xiang enters a deeper memory: The old Ghost Ape gives Li Xiang a Bodhi Seed to protect his consciousness, then serves him another bowl of Great Sage Wine. The wine sends Li Xiang into a memory from his infancy, far more powerful than the one he experienced before.
  • Li Zhong’s desperate flight: Li Xiang witnesses his adoptive grandfather and loyal servant, Li Zhong, carrying him as an infant across a storm-wracked black sea toward Penglai Immortal Island. Gravely wounded and near death, Li Zhong reveals that the island is the Li family’s ancestral home. The Sword Mound surrounding it is a formation built by Li ancestors to suppress a calamity capable of destroying the Dao.
  • The family’s legacy and a hidden enemy: Li Zhong explains that the Sword Mound Token will let the infant pass through the island’s defenses and that the Li family’s true inheritance—including the complete True Explanation of the Sword Dao—lies there. Before they can reach safety, a Sage Patriarch attacks from across the void, pursuing the Li family’s remnants.
  • Li Zhong’s sacrifice: Unable to defeat the attacker, Li Zhong shields the infant, then uses his final strength to hurl him toward the mainland and away from Penglai. He urges the child to live and conceal his identity. The Sage’s blow kills Li Zhong, and the memory ends.
  • Li Xiang chooses his path: Back in the tavern, Li Xiang understands that Penglai holds both the truth of his family’s destruction and the inheritance he needs. He resolves to go there—not merely to survive, but to gain the strength to confront the powerful enemies who destroyed his clan.
  • Farewell to the Ghost Ape: Li Xiang thanks the old Ghost Ape for the wine and promises to return with a good drink if he survives. The Ghost Ape warns that Li Xiang’s pursuers are nearing, and Li Xiang leaves the tavern to continue through Wangsi City.

Character Developments and Interactions

  • Li Xiang remains cautious during the dangerous memory journey, but what he learns turns his search for strength into a personal mission. He responds to grief and anger with resolve, believing power—not emotion—is what can change his fate.
  • Li Zhong is revealed as a devoted protector who risks everything for the infant Li Xiang. His final act secures the child’s survival while preserving the secret of his identity.
  • The old Ghost Ape acts as a mentor and benefactor. He enables Li Xiang to access the memory and offers a warm, mutual farewell, despite their brief acquaintance.

Significant Themes

  • Sacrifice and loyalty: Li Zhong’s devotion to the Li family and its young heir culminates in his self-sacrifice.
  • Inheritance and identity: Li Xiang discovers that his origins, family legacy, and future are tied to Penglai and the Sword Mound.
  • Power and survival: The Sage’s overwhelming attack underscores the brutal hierarchy of the world, while Li Xiang concludes that only sufficient strength can challenge it.
  • Memory and risk: Recovering the past provides vital truth, but accessing memories through reincarnation carries grave danger to the soul.

Ch. 288Red-Rumped Yama!

Chapter Summary

Key plot points and events

  • After the tavern disturbance, Wangsi City is under intense security, with ghost soldiers and netherworld hounds searching the streets.
  • Li Xiang, disguised as a frail old ghost, moves through the patrols unnoticed. He reflects on what he learned about his origins: Penglai Immortal Island and Sword Mound are connected. Rather than give in to anger or grief, he resolves to survive, return to the living world, and uncover the truth once he is stronger.
  • Li Xiang scouts three possible routes to the source of the Yin-Yang Boundary River and the cross-world portal:
    1. Yellow Springs Imperial Road: Too dangerous, guarded by a vast army and lethal formations.
    2. River of Forgetfulness cliff path: A hazardous flank route, potentially usable with his companions’ abilities.
    3. Ancient underground drainage channel: His preferred plan, bypassing the army and reaching beneath the Golden Bridge of Naihe. Though filled with poison and miasma, the group may be able to withstand it using their combined skills.
  • After committing all three routes to memory, Li Xiang heads back to the abandoned bone house to rejoin his companions.
  • At the Bone Cavern Tavern, the old Ghost Ape remains behind after the other patrons have fled. He drinks Great Sage Wine and senses an unseen visitor.
  • Red-Rumped Yama, one of the Netherworld’s Ten Great Yama Kings and the terrifying figure glimpsed when the Two-World Passage collapsed, appears in the tavern. Despite the pressure of his overwhelming power, the old bartender remains completely unmoved.
  • Red-Rumped Yama asks the old Ghost Ape, “You’ve placed your bet on him?”—apparently referring to Li Xiang and suggesting the bartender has a hidden stake in his fate.

Character developments

  • Li Xiang becomes more emotionally composed and purposeful after learning more about his origins. He recognizes how far he is from the power of the forces involved and prioritizes preparation over reckless action.
  • The old Ghost Ape is revealed to be far more formidable and mysterious than his frail, blind-bartender appearance suggests. He can withstand Red-Rumped Yama’s presence without even stirring.
  • Red-Rumped Yama is introduced as a violent, immensely powerful Netherworld ruler who takes a personal interest in the old Ghost Ape’s choice to support—or “bet on”—someone.

Significant themes

  • Survival through preparation: Li Xiang rejects a direct assault and instead plans multiple routes, balancing danger against the group’s abilities.
  • Power and humility: His victories against powerful opponents mean little beside the ancient forces shaping events; he understands the need to grow before seeking answers.
  • Fate and agency: Li Xiang prepares as thoroughly as he can, while acknowledging that the outcome will ultimately depend on forces beyond his control.
  • Hidden identities and loyalties: The disguised Li Xiang, the deceptively frail bartender, and the mysterious “bet” all suggest that appearances conceal deeper truths.

Character interactions

  • Li Xiang’s planning centers on how his companions’ strengths could make dangerous routes viable: Tang Hua’an’s spear, Chu Tian’s Double Pupils, Miao Xiyue’s poison resistance, and Daoist Xuan Shu’s Thunder Arts.
  • In the tavern, the old Ghost Ape calmly invites the unseen presence to drink, then faces Red-Rumped Yama without fear.
  • Red-Rumped Yama’s question implies a tense, personal history between the two apes—and raises the possibility that the old Ghost Ape’s support of Li Xiang has drawn the Yama King’s attention.

Ch. 289The Same Root, the Same Source!

Plot points and events

  • At the Bone Cavern Tavern, Red-Rumped Yama confronts the blind old Ghost Ape after sensing his power in Li Xiang. He suspects the Ghost Ape is an “Obsessive Thought” left behind when Victorious Fighting Buddha became Buddha, and demands to know why he survived in the Netherworld with Fiery Golden Eyes.
  • The Ghost Ape answers only, “Why cling so tightly?” Golden flames flare in his blind eyes, effortlessly suppressing Red-Rumped Yama’s karmic fire and revealing power connected to Victorious Fighting Buddha. Red-Rumped Yama restrains himself, unwilling to jeopardize his larger plan to conquer the living world, and leaves after threatening the Ghost Ape.
  • Once alone, the Ghost Ape’s golden flames fade. He pours out the last of his wine, says the wind is rising, and dissolves along with his stool, erasing every trace of his presence from the tavern.
  • Meanwhile, Li Xiang returns to his companions and explains three possible routes to the Yin-Yang Boundary River. He chooses the abandoned underground drainage channel as their best chance to reach the base of the Golden Bridge of Naihe undetected, despite its deadly Corpse Poison and Poison Miasma.
  • Li Xiang assigns roles: Miao Xiyue and Dabao will neutralize poison; Lin Xuanshu will use Daoist lightning to eliminate threats quietly; the others will conserve strength. Their escape depends on the bridge opening at midnight in three days and Senior Brother Qin staying lucid long enough to restrain Yin Tianzi’s laws for three crucial breaths.
  • The group agrees to fight for survival, then spends hours planning for hazards in the channel and beneath the bridge.
  • Just as they finish, a familiar, overwhelming pressure descends on their hiding place. Li Xiang recognizes it as Senior Brother Qin’s presence.

Character developments and interactions

  • Red-Rumped Yama is furious and unsettled by the Ghost Ape’s mysterious survival and connection to Victorious Fighting Buddha. Though tempted to attack, he chooses caution to protect his invasion plans.
  • The old Ghost Ape remains calm under threat, demonstrating immense spiritual authority before quietly disappearing. His farewell suggests both acceptance of change and an imminent turning point.
  • Li Xiang shows composure and leadership, turning what he learned into a practical escape plan and clearly assigning responsibilities.
  • Tang Hua’an and Guo Kai respond with defiant enthusiasm, reaffirming the group’s trust and willingness to risk their lives together. The others show the same resolve more quietly.
  • Miao Xiyue and Lin Xuanshu accept vital, specialized roles in the plan. The group’s coordination reflects how close and dependable they have become through repeated trials.
  • Senior Brother Qin’s arrival interrupts the preparations and signals that the next stage may depend on his condition and ability to control the underworld’s laws.

Significant themes

  • Identity and shared origins: Red-Rumped Yama and the Ghost Ape are linked to the same source, yet embody radically different remnants of Victorious Fighting Buddha.
  • Letting go versus clinging: The Ghost Ape’s question challenges Red-Rumped Yama’s attachment to conquest and control, while the Ghost Ape himself releases his final ties to the tavern.
  • Survival through solidarity and preparation: Li Xiang’s group faces overwhelming odds by combining individual strengths, planning carefully, and trusting one another.
  • A world on the brink: The approaching ghost army, the planned invasion, and the Ghost Ape’s warning that “the wind is rising” all foreshadow imminent upheaval.

Ch. 290The Golden Bridge of Naihe!

Key plot points and events

  • Qin Zhong visits the bone hut during the brief daily hour when he can still control himself. Yin Tianzi’s laws are steadily consuming his soul and reason.
  • He reveals that Red-Rumped Yama and Black Moon Yama have gathered their strongest troops around the Golden Bridge of Naihe. They have also deployed the ancient Nine Abyss Tenfold Extinction Formation, a peerless killing array capable of trapping saints.
  • Qin Zhong identifies a narrow cliffside route as the formation’s blind spot and urges the group to use it. Li Xiang accepts the information but privately favors their more concealed, comparatively stable route through an abandoned drainage channel. He intends to choose based on conditions rather than commit to one plan.
  • As Qin Zhong loses control to Yin Tianzi, he secretly warns Li Xiang that his great-grandmother may still be alive—and that she was responsible for making him Yin Tianzi. Qin Zhong then departs for the White Bone Throne.
  • The warning radically changes Li Xiang’s understanding of events. He suspects that forces behind Qin Zhong’s transformation may also be connected to the wider conflicts over Fortune, the Netherworld invasion, and the search for immortality. He resolves to survive and cut through whatever stands in his way.
  • Over the next two days, the group prepares for its escape: Miao Xiyue makes pills to resist Corpse Poison, Lin Xuanshu crafts Purple Thunder Sealing Talismans, Guo Kai works to restore his strength, Tang Hua’an prepares his gun, Chu Tian adjusts to the Netherworld’s laws, and Li Xiang creates paper doubles disguised as ghost soldiers.
  • On the third day, three ancient horns announce the bridge’s imminent completion and the ghost army’s expedition. The Netherworld shakes, and the baleful clouds begin to tear apart.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qin Zhong remains determined to help Li Xiang despite his worsening condition. He gives him tactical intelligence and risks a final act of independent will to deliver his warning about his great-grandmother.
  • Li Xiang responds carefully rather than openly challenging Qin Zhong’s route advice. After the revelation, his strategic caution deepens into suspicion about the larger conspiracy, but he keeps his attention on the immediate task of survival.
  • The group shows disciplined cooperation: each member prepares according to their strengths, while their silence and focus reflect the danger of their coming operation.

Significant themes

  • Agency versus manipulation: Qin Zhong may not have become Yin Tianzi by fate or chance; someone may have deliberately shaped his destiny.
  • Uncertainty and strategic flexibility: Li Xiang refuses to treat any route or plan as certain, recognizing that conditions can change.
  • Sacrifice and resistance: Qin Zhong uses his remaining clarity to help others, while Li Xiang vows to resist any scheme that threatens them.
  • Escalating conflict: The formation, massed ghost army, and opening bridge signal that the crisis is moving from covert preparation to imminent invasion.

Ch. 291The Four Great Yamas!

Key plot points and events

  • A million-strong Ghost Clan army gathers on the blood-red plain to force open the passage between worlds. The Yin-Yang Boundary River and the Golden Bridge of Naihe are taking shape.
  • Li Xiang and his five companions disguise themselves as Corpse Ghouls using handmade ghost skins. The disguise suppresses their living signs, but the skins’ poison and resentment will assimilate them if they cannot remove them within twelve double-hours.
  • Their planned route through an underground drain is blocked by the Nine Abyss Tenfold Extinction Formation and lethal Yellow Springs balefulness. Li Xiang instead chooses a perilous cliffside walkway, following a route hinted at by Qin Zhong.
  • The group crosses above the River of Forgetfulness, avoiding the formation and its deadly waters. When a plank breaks beneath Guo Kai, Tang Hua’an saves him by hauling him against the cliff without using energy that might expose them.
  • Guided by Li Xiang’s Dragon-Seeking Instinct and Chu Tian’s Double Pupils, all six reach the army’s rear and blend into its ranks undetected.
  • They see four of the Netherworld’s Ten Halls of Yama at the bridge: Black Sky Lord, Red-Rumped Yama, Thousand-Head Yama, and a female Yama associated with the Yellow Springs. Black Sky Lord is revealed as the mastermind behind the catastrophe in Linjiang County.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang remains composed and decisive, adapting quickly when the escape route fails. He leads the dangerous crossing and keeps the group focused, even as the scale of the enemy forces becomes clear.
  • Tang Hua’an accepts the ghost skin without hesitation and later saves Guo Kai through strength and quick judgment, showing his courage and reliability.
  • Guo Kai narrowly avoids falling into the river, underscoring how fragile their stealthy escape is.
  • Chu Tian contributes his Double Pupils to identify spatial dangers and supports Li Xiang’s routefinding.
  • The companions follow Li Xiang’s instructions without protest, displaying trust and resolve. The group’s cooperation—not force—gets them through the crossing.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and urgency: The ghost skins offer concealment at the cost of bodily corruption and a strict time limit.
  • Courage under overwhelming odds: The heroes press on despite the deadly route and an army of unimaginable size.
  • Tactical restraint and teamwork: Their survival depends on precise coordination and avoiding any use of power that could reveal them.
  • Escalating stakes: The formation of the bridge and the arrival of four powerful Yamas make clear that the crisis is larger than a simple escape.

Ch. 292The Great Battle Begins: No Rest Until Death!

Key plot points and events

  • Four Kings of Hell—Black Heaven, Red-Rump, Thousand Heads, and Nether-Spring—assemble above the Netherworld’s million-strong army. Their combined power makes clear that ordinary Grandmasters cannot stop the invasion.
  • Yin Tianzi arrives on a White Bone Throne. He wears Qin Zhong’s face and body, but Li Xiang sees that his senior brother’s humanity has been overwhelmed by the Netherworld’s laws. The ghost army kneels and swears to conquer the living world.
  • The Golden Bridge of Naihe tears at the boundary between the worlds. Blood rain and fading protective formations mark the violent collapse of the barriers.
  • The Netherworld’s target is not the vulnerable north but Demon City, the living world’s strategic heart and home of the City God Headquarters. If it falls, southern defenses could collapse and the city’s buried evil spirits could be unleashed.
  • A huge gate opens onto Demon City, near the Huangpu River and the City God Headquarters. Li Xiang and his five companions—Guo Kai, Lin Xuanshu, Tang Hua’an, Chu Tian, and Miao Xiyue—remain disguised among the ghosts and prepare to escape through the gate when the two worlds’ laws clash.
  • Nether-Spring Yama senses traces of the living among the vanguard and warns the other Kings of Hell that infiltrators have joined the army.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang suppresses his shock and humiliation at being forced to kneel, then focuses on survival. He understands the scale and strategy of the invasion and gives his companions strict instructions: stay hidden and seize the chance to cross.
  • Qin Zhong appears to have lost control of himself to Yin Tianzi, a devastating sign of how completely the Netherworld has claimed him.
  • The companions share Li Xiang’s horror at seeing Demon City exposed, but his warning redirects them from despair to their immediate escape plan.
  • Nether-Spring Yama reveals a perceptive, playful cruelty, identifying the infiltrators through her Yellow Springs Water.

Significant themes

  • Humanity versus supernatural power: Qin Zhong’s transformation shows the cost of being consumed by forces beyond human control.
  • Strategic annihilation: The Netherworld seeks to strike the living world’s heart and dismantle its defenses, not merely claim territory.
  • Survival amid overwhelming forces: Li Xiang and his companions must rely on concealment and timing when individual strength is nearly meaningless.
  • Infiltration and exposure: The group’s disguise offers temporary protection, but Nether-Spring’s discovery threatens to end their escape before it begins.

Ch. 293A sword's cold radiance shone across the Ninefold Abyss!

Key plot points and events

  • Nether-Spring Yama detects that Li Xiang and five companions are living humans disguised as Corpse Ghouls. Thousand-Head Yama immediately tries to smash their formation, threatening them and the nearby ghost soldiers.
  • Red-Rumped Yama stops him, arguing that an attack could disrupt the opening of the Golden Bridge of Naihe and the invasion plan. He recognizes Li Xiang but decides to let the group hide, hoping they will witness the destruction of the mortal world before he kills them.
  • Black Sky Lord also notices Li Xiang but keeps silent, hoping the young man might cause trouble for Red-Rumped Yama. The Kings of Hell’s rivalries and schemes inadvertently spare the infiltrators.
  • Li Xiang realizes the four supreme beings have found them. He restrains his companions and maintains the corpse disguise as the terrifying gazes pass over them. Though they survive, he understands they are now being treated as prey.
  • As Yin Tianzi Qin Zhong prepares to signal the invasion, he briefly regains control of his body. Instead of striking toward the mortal world, he turns his imperial sword against the Kings of Hell’s carriages and the formation near the bridge. The chapter ends as the unexpected blow crashes into the Netherworld’s forces.

Character developments

  • Li Xiang stays disciplined under overwhelming pressure, stopping Guo Kai from reacting and deciding not to rely on luck.
  • Red-Rumped Yama reveals his cruelty and confidence, preferring to prolong the humans’ fear rather than kill them outright.
  • Black Sky Lord emerges as a calculating opportunist, silently encouraging conflict among his rivals.
  • Qin Zhong shows that his human consciousness is not entirely lost: at a decisive moment, he wrests control from Yin Tianzi and acts against the invasion.

Significant themes

  • Power and vulnerability: Even expert disguises cannot fool beings who embody the Netherworld’s laws.
  • Cruelty and dehumanization: The Kings of Hell treat people as playthings and souls as food.
  • Rivalry and self-interest: The rulers’ internal schemes shape events as much as their military plans.
  • Resistance and agency: Qin Zhong’s brief act of defiance disrupts the enemy’s intended course, while Li Xiang’s restraint helps his group survive.

Character interactions

  • Thousand-Head Yama’s fury is checked by Red-Rumped Yama, who asserts command and turns the discovery into a cruel game.
  • Nether-Spring Yama remains indifferent, prioritizing the invasion’s progress over the hidden humans.
  • Black Sky Lord silently watches the exchange, choosing not to help either side.
  • Li Xiang quietly commands his frightened companions to remain motionless.
  • Qin Zhong’s sudden attack breaks the Kings of Hell’s unity just as they prepare to launch the invasion.

Ch. 294On the Banks of the Huangpu River!

Key plot points and events

  • Qin Zhong, newly seated on the White Bone Throne, unleashes a Saint-level sword stroke. Though the four great Yamas prepare to defend themselves, he redirects the blow at the Nine Abyss Tenfold Extinction Formation around the Golden Bridge of Naihe.
  • Qin Zhong destroys the formation and pours the Netherworld’s source power into the unfinished bridge, completing it and tearing open a vast gateway from the Netherworld into Demon City’s Living World.
  • The effort exhausts Qin Zhong’s remaining human will. He collapses onto the throne, apparently surrendering fully to the laws of the Netherworld.
  • With the Yamas’ attention fixed on the newly opened passage, Li Xiang and his five companions seize their chance. Disguised in Corpse Ghoul hides, they blend into the ghost army’s charge and head for the bridge.
  • Li Xiang directs the group to avoid using supernatural powers, rely on physical strength, and follow the safest route across the bridge. The Yamas rally the million-strong army and order an invasion of the Living World.
  • The scene shifts to Demon City, where the glittering Foreign Concession contrasts with the guarded old Chinese quarter surrounding the City God Headquarters. Elder Pei Yanlai, a powerful pro-Western figure, relaxes in the Headquarters as he boasts that the Lu Family’s influence has weakened.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qin Zhong makes a final, deliberate sacrifice: he uses his last moment of clarity not to attack the Yamas, but to open the route home for his allies. His action costs him the last of his humanity.
  • Li Xiang suppresses his grief and turns immediately to action, privately promising his senior brother to protect the Living World. He coordinates the group’s escape with calm, practical orders.
  • The companions are shaken by Qin Zhong’s power and sacrifice, but rally behind Li Xiang. Tang Hua’an and Guo Kai lead the push through the crowd; Chu Tian tracks stable spatial paths; Miao Xiyue and Lin Xuanshu guard the flanks.
  • The four Yamas shift from fear of Qin Zhong’s sword to greed and excitement at the open gateway, directing their forces toward the Living World.
  • Pei Yanlai’s boastful confidence introduces political tension within Demon City, setting his factional maneuvering against the imminent supernatural invasion.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and hope: Qin Zhong gives up his remaining self to create a chance for his friends and the Living World.
  • Duty over grief: Li Xiang chooses action and responsibility even as he mourns his senior brother.
  • Power and its cost: The throne grants Qin Zhong immense authority, but its use accelerates his loss of identity.
  • Invasion and divided defenses: The ghost army’s advance threatens a Living World whose city is already marked by political factionalism and contrasting degrees of vigilance.

Ch. 295Night Parade of a Hundred Ghosts!

Key plot points and events

  • Pei Yanlai celebrates the supposed deaths of Lu Zaizhou and Li Xiang, expecting his Pro-Western faction to seize control of the City God Headquarters with Western technology.
  • The Heaven-Shaking Bell tolls eighty-one times, signaling that the Netherworld has breached the mortal world. A huge rift opens over Demon City, blood rain falls, and the Golden Bridge of Naihe carries a million ghost soldiers into the city.
  • The City God Headquarters’ rival factions gather in shock. With the Commander-in-Chief’s forces away, its leaders fear Demon City has little power to resist.
  • Li Xiang and five companions—Guo Kai, Lin Xuanshu, Tang Hua’an, Chu Tian, and Miao Xiyue—return from the Netherworld disguised in Corpse Ghoul skins. They survive the crossing but discover that the Yin-Yang boundary still separates them from safety.
  • Li Xiang realizes the gateway is only partly open. The four Kings of Hell are present as Grandmaster-level avatars, held back by the mortal world’s Heavenly Dao; the ghost army’s deaths may help widen the rift and let their true bodies through.
  • Rather than reveal themselves amid the advancing horde, Li Xiang’s group stays concealed. Across the Huangpu River, the City God Headquarters’ Ghost Controller Families raise the Night Parade of a Hundred Ghosts formation, unleashing thousands of captive ghosts and Corpse Kings to meet the invasion.

Character developments and interactions

  • Pei Yanlai shifts from smug confidence to terror as the invasion renders his political schemes and reliance on Western technology seemingly worthless.
  • Li Xiang remains composed and perceptive: he diagnoses the barrier, identifies the Kings of Hell as avatars, and warns his companions not to mistake their return for safety.
  • Guo Kai is eager to fight, but Tang Hua’an restrains him, pointing out that charging into the ghost horde would be suicidal.
  • Lin Xuanshu recognizes the Yin-Yang Boundary River’s projection, while Chu Tian identifies the defenders as Ghost Controller families.
  • The Ghost Controllers reveal their grim resolve: they use their own blood and release the evil spirits they have contained, even sacrificing themselves to defend Demon City.

Significant themes

  • Political rivalry becomes irrelevant before an existential threat: the factions’ power struggles collapse in the face of the Netherworld invasion.
  • Sacrifice and duty: the Ghost Controllers choose to unleash dangerous forces—and offer themselves—to hold the line.
  • Survival through restraint and insight: Li Xiang’s group survives by staying hidden and understanding the danger rather than acting rashly.
  • A fragile boundary between worlds: the Heavenly Dao limits the invasion, but the gateway’s instability makes the mortal world’s protection precarious.

Ch. 296Ten Thousand Ghosts in Tow!

Key plot points and events

  • The disguised group led by Li Xiang enters the Huangpu River battlefield amid a massive clash between the Netherworld army and Demon City’s Ghost Controller defenders. Li orders everyone to act like ordinary Corpse Ghouls, avoid using human abilities, and find a way through the fighting.
  • As they near the defenders’ formation, a mysterious force freezes the entire battlefield—including Li and his companions. The source is Yang Yuan, the Yang Family patriarch and the Ghost Controllers’ hidden “Sea-Calming Needle.”
  • Yang Yuan, who has sealed thousands of vicious ghosts inside his own body, halts the million-strong invasion with a single display of will, destroying the vanguard and warning the Netherworld army not to advance.
  • A Peak Grandmaster Ghost King attacks Yang Yuan with a bone dragon and Yellow Springs Deathwater. Yang dismisses him as a fool and begins releasing the ghosts trapped within himself, invoking “Ten Thousand Ghosts in Tow! Night Parade of a Hundred Ghosts!”

Character developments

  • Li Xiang remains disciplined under extreme danger, keeping his disguise and leading his group through the battle. Seeing Yang Yuan’s sacrifice gives him profound respect for the patriarch.
  • Yang Yuan is revealed as a frail, near-death but immensely powerful guardian. He has sacrificed the chance to pursue a higher realm, enduring a cursed existence to contain ghosts and protect Demon City.
  • Chu Tian identifies Yang Yuan and explains his role, showing his knowledge of the Ghost Controller lineages and his awe of the patriarch.
  • The Ghost King attackers initially mock Yang Yuan’s apparent weakness, but his power forces the Netherworld army to pause; one then challenges him directly.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and duty: Yang Yuan accepts torment and a shortened life to defend the Yin-Yang boundary and Demon City.
  • Power born from suffering: His mastery comes from controlling a forbidden, inherently destructive practice rather than escaping it.
  • Appearance versus reality: The seemingly dying old man proves more formidable than an invading army.
  • Courage amid overwhelming danger: Li’s group must suppress their instincts and stay hidden while surrounded by slaughter.

Character interactions

  • Li gives his companions strict instructions to maintain their Corpse Ghoul disguises and avoid intervening.
  • Yang Yuan faces the four Yama incarnations’ taunts with silence, answering them through action rather than argument.
  • The Yama incarnations mock his condition and demand Demon City’s surrender; Yang responds with a warning that no one may pass.
  • When a Ghost King attacks, Yang dismisses him and unleashes the ghosts within his body, escalating the confrontation.

Ch. 297King of Hell Youquan!

Plot points and events

  • Yang Yuan unleashes his ghost army with the precision of a trained force. It overwhelms the Netherworld’s charge, killing a Ghost King and its Two-Headed Bone Dragon.
  • His intervention shocks Li Xiang and the others. They recognize that Yang Yuan must constantly suppress the ten thousand ghosts within him even while fighting.
  • Red-Rumped Yama prepares to attack Yang Yuan, but King of Hell Youquan volunteers to deal with him so the other Yamas can preserve their strength and keep the passage to the living world open.
  • Youquan attacks with Yellow Springs water, which rapidly corrodes Yang Yuan’s ghosts. Rather than retreat, Yang Yuan transforms himself into the Ghost Abyss, releasing the vast store of evil spirits the Yang family’s ancestors have accumulated and sealed over generations.
  • The endless Ghost Tide initially counters Youquan’s attack, but she invokes her royal authority as one of the Ten Halls of Yama. The ghosts submit and kneel to her, leaving Yang Yuan’s ultimate sacrifice unable to stop her.
  • While Youquan taunts Yang Yuan, the other Yamas continue widening the Golden Bridge of Naihe. The rift opens more than halfway, exposing Demon City and its fleeing civilians; the Netherworld army is close to crossing.

Character developments and interactions

  • Yang Yuan is revealed as a formidable Ghost Controller whose power comes at terrible personal cost. He knowingly gives up his human form—and any chance of reincarnation—to defend Demon City.
  • Youquan is confident and cruel, treating Yang Yuan as an old acquaintance and dismissing his sacrifice as futile. Her authority over ghosts proves stronger than his command of them.
  • Red-Rumped Yama is eager to destroy Yang Yuan, but accepts Youquan’s intervention because the invasion takes priority. Black Sky Lord reinforces that the gate-opening plan must not be delayed.
  • Li Xiang, Guo Kai, Tang Hua’an, and Chu Tian watch from within the ghost ranks. Their fear and respect deepen as they grasp both Yang Yuan’s strength and the cost of his role.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and duty: Yang Yuan spends his life and humanity to protect the living.
  • Power and its limits: Vast numbers and personal mastery cannot overcome Youquan’s inherent authority over the Netherworld’s ghosts.
  • Legacy: The Yang family’s generations of sacrifice have built the Ghost Abyss and supplied its army.
  • The scale of the threat: Even Yang Yuan’s stand only buys time; the invasion of Demon City is on the verge of beginning.

Ch. 298A True Ghost!

Key events

  • Hidden among the underworld army, Li Xiang prepares to lead his five companions through the chaos and onto the Golden Bridge of Naihe. Just as he is about to act, Yang Yuan reveals that the Ghost Controllers’ sealed ghosts were not merely enslaved—they were stored within them as their graves.
  • Yang Yuan collapses the Ghost Abyss and devours the essence of the million ghosts it had contained, transforming into the hundred-zhang fiend Ten Thousand Ghosts Become Divine.
  • His first attack nearly destroys King of Hell Youquan’s incarnation. The other three kings—Red-Rumped Yama, Black Sky Lord, and Thousand-Head Yama—join the fight when Yang Yuan’s power begins threatening the Golden Bridge passage.
  • Yang Yuan battles all four kings at once, using his remaining life and the ghosts’ essence to hold them back. As his fiendish body weakens, the kings launch a combined killing strike that annihilates him completely.
  • With Yang Yuan gone, the kings order the million-strong army to charge and attack Demon City. The chapter ends as the invasion resumes.

Character developments and interactions

  • Yang Yuan makes a final, self-sacrificing stand, knowingly burning through his soul and life to oppose the underworld kings. His defiance turns him into a terrifying force, but his ultimate sacrifice cannot stop the invasion permanently.
  • Youquan shifts from confidence to genuine fear when Yang Yuan’s attack overwhelms her defenses. She survives and joins the other kings in bringing him down.
  • Red-Rumped Yama, Black Sky Lord, and Thousand-Head Yama set aside their schemes and grudges to protect the Golden Bridge and defeat Yang Yuan. Their coordinated assault shows that his power is a threat even to the four kings together.
  • Li Xiang and his companions remain concealed as the confrontation draws the army’s attention away from them, though the chapter does not show them making their move.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and duty: Yang Yuan spends his remaining life protecting the living world, fulfilling his family’s legacy of guarding Guanjiang Pass.
  • The cost of power: His transformation comes from consuming the ghosts bound within him and burning away his own existence.
  • Defiance against overwhelming force: Though Yang Yuan cannot win, he forces the kings to fight at full strength and delays their advance.
  • The tragedy of victory: The kings survive at great cost, but Yang Yuan’s death clears the way for the army’s assault on Demon City.

Ch. 299Ghosts cannot be killed!

Key plot points and events

  • As a flood of ghosts carries Li Xiang and his five companions toward the open interworld gate, they grieve Yang Yuan’s apparent death. Li Xiang urges them to keep moving: Yang’s sacrifice has weakened the four Kings of Hell and created their only chance to reach the bridge.
  • Cane taps sound from the devastated battlefield. Yang Yuan reappears unharmed, despite having been blasted apart. Red-Rumped Yama attacks him again and again, but each time Yang is destroyed, he returns moments later.
  • The Kings of Hell are shaken when their strongest attacks prove futile. Yang does not fight back; he simply stands in their way and warns them not to advance.
  • Watching from the ghost army, Li Xiang realizes Yang has become a rule-bound being—a “living rule,” like the Ghost Bride sealed in his Ghost-Slaying Blade. Yang’s enduring resolve to guard Guanjiang Pass fused with a broken law of the world, making him impossible to kill as long as that rule remains intact.
  • Li Xiang also deduces that the Ghost-Slaying Blade was forged from a true ghost of this same kind: only a rule can counter another rule.
  • Recognizing that Yang’s new state may not last, Li Xiang tells his companions to stop staring and seize the opening. The Kings of Hell are occupied, leaving their vast ghost army without leadership.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Xiang suppresses his grief and focuses on survival. His insight into Yang’s nature deepens his understanding of the Ghost-Slaying Blade and the supernatural rules underlying the conflict. He takes charge, urgently directing his companions to exploit the distraction.
  • Yang Yuan returns as a silent, uncanny guardian. His transformation makes him seemingly immortal, but his power appears tied to his unyielding duty—and may be consuming what remains of his existence.
  • The Kings of Hell, especially Red-Rumped Yama, shift from confidence and rage to terror as their attacks repeatedly fail. The Black Sky Lord recognizes that Yang is neither human nor an ordinary ghost.
  • Li Xiang’s companions—Guo Kai, Lin Xuanshu, Tang Hua’an, Chu Tian, and the others—are grief-stricken by Yang’s apparent sacrifice, then stunned by his return. Li Xiang’s command pulls them back to the immediate danger.

Significant themes

  • Sacrifice and duty: Yang’s resolve to protect the boundary between worlds persists beyond the destruction of his body and soul.
  • Rules versus force: Ordinary attacks cannot defeat a being whose existence is a rule; overcoming him would require a higher-order rule.
  • Grief transformed into action: Li Xiang honors Yang not through despair, but by using the chance Yang has created.
  • The cost of persistence: Yang may be impossible to kill, yet maintaining his existence could consume him entirely.

Ch. 300The nation rises against the ghosts!

  • Yang Yuan holds the line—but cannot be killed. The four Kings of Hell repeatedly destroy his body, only for him to reappear. Black Sky Lord recognizes that Yang Yuan has become a Concept Incarnation of the rule “No Passage,” sustained by Demon City’s City God formation and his unyielding vow to defend Guanjiang Pass. As long as those foundations endure, he cannot be slain.
  • The Netherworld finds a way around him. Pressured by Yin Tianzi, the Kings of Hell sacrifice the incarnations of Thousand-Head Yama and Nether-Spring Yama to open a rift to Yama Hell beneath Yang Yuan. Black Sky Lord knocks him into the void, banishing him from the battlefield. With the barrier gone, Red-Rumped Yama leads the million-strong army across the Golden Bridge of Naihe toward Demon City.
  • Li Xiang’s group escapes in the invasion’s confusion. Li Xiang, Guo Kai, Lin Xuanshu, Tang Hua’an, Chu Tian, and Miao Xiyue grieve Yang Yuan’s fate but recognize that his stand has created their chance to return to the living world. Disguised as ghosts and suppressing every trace of life, they blend into the army and cross the bridge into Demon City.
  • Demon City’s defenders are overwhelmed. The Netherworld army pours into the city and clashes with its City God forces. At City God Headquarters, leaders from rival factions despair as their first defense collapses. One elder urges retreat, but the Shen Family patriarch argues that losing Demon City would give the Netherworld a foothold and doom the Great Xin Dynasty.
  • The crisis triggers a nationwide call to arms. A white-bearded grand elder ends the factional dispute and orders the Nine Provinces Netherworld Altar activated. He calls for aid from every Dao tradition, warlord, and hidden sect, and opens emergency passages linking the dynasty’s 365 City God Temples. His message is clear: all rivalries must be set aside, and the nation must unite against the ghosts.
Character developments and interactions: Yang Yuan’s quiet, absolute resolve is revealed as the source of his extraordinary power; even in defeat, he buys crucial time at great cost. The Kings of Hell, initially confident, become fearful and desperate, while their rivalry and mutual threats force Thousand-Head and Nether-Spring to sacrifice their incarnations. Li Xiang emerges as a pragmatic leader, suppressing grief to guide his companions through danger. In Demon City, factional leaders clash over whether to flee or stand their ground, until the grand elder redirects their fear into collective action.
Themes: Sacrifice and duty; the limits of force against an idea or rule; courage amid apparent defeat; and the necessity of setting aside factional conflict when survival is at stake.
