Background / History

Macron tests Rubick shortly after Rubick defeats Clay and becomes the tavern’s deputy security captain. He evades Rubick’s full-strength punch, counters, and criticizes him for relying on brute strength without technique 3 4.

A letter announcing an inspection from headquarters changes Macron’s plans. The Rose Tavern belongs to a secret organization that gathers intelligence and recruits talent, but Macron has yet to send it a recruit. He selects Rubick for intensive training because Rubick has good physical ability despite his inexperience. Macron tells him that betrayal would bring a hunt by the organization, then begins training him through punishing defensive drills 4.

Two months later, Macron brings Nico Robin to assess Rubick and claims the new recruit is nearly as capable as he is. When Rubick defeats the pirate Ace of Spades, Macron urges him to kill Ace for the bounty. Rubick refuses; Robin takes charge of the matter and orders medical treatment for him. Macron later takes the bounty money after Ace is handed over to the Marines 5 6 8.

• Clay — Former deputy security captain. Macron had previously beaten him into compliance and later considers Rubick the better recruit 4.
