Ch. 161Talent
Plot points and events
- Hades kills a CP0 agent by binding him with Haki and draining his life force, which strengthens him and gives him an unsettling sense of pleasure.
- The narration explains several hereditary powers: the Tartarus Family’s Fierce God physique; the Great Xia Kingdom’s powerful, gold-colored Armament Haki, or “qi”; and the Fairland Family’s exceptional Observation Haki, including the rare Observation Haki Killer.
- During the Rocks Pirates’ attack, Hades fights through World Government reinforcements while deliberately avoiding the Celestial Dragons.
- Fiorella Maso duels Blade Edge. Though Edge is the stronger fighter, he is holding back on Hades’s orders, keeping Maso safe while protecting her family’s hidden guardian from having to reveal himself.
- Golden King Donovan traps Celestial Dragon Watsonberg Soto inside his Golden Domain. Soto’s powerful guardian—a fighter with an Ancient Zoan Emperor Crocodile fruit—attacks Donovan, but Soto remains at risk of being killed.
- Maso warns Hades that Soto’s death could provoke the powerful Watsonberg Family. Hades argues that the family cannot destroy the Rocks Pirates and notes that Donovan, not he, is the one threatening Soto.
Character developments
- Hades displays increasingly refined Haki and a ruthless fighting style. Draining life force exhilarates him, suggesting the power may be addictive. He also shows strategic concern for Maso’s safety.
- Maso is established as a capable young fighter: at twenty-one, she has Regular Vice Admiral strength without a Devil Fruit. She remains composed under pressure but is mindful of political consequences.
- Edge follows Hades’s orders, using a controlled duel to protect Maso without exposing her guardian.
- Donovan is shown as a formidable, methodical combatant whose awakened Devil Fruit lets him dominate the battlefield. His anger at Soto makes the danger to the Celestial Dragon especially serious.
Significant themes
- Inherited power and hierarchy: Families and kingdoms possess distinct bloodline gifts, while strength also determines political influence.
- Power and its cost: Hades’s life-draining ability grants strength but may foster addiction; Donovan’s domain likewise consumes stamina.
- Protection through restraint: Edge shields Maso by holding back, while the guardian’s strength is concealed.
- Political power versus battlefield power: Soto’s family status may have consequences, but it cannot necessarily protect him from the Rocks Pirates’ superior force.
Character interactions
- Hades keeps watch over his fiancée, Maso, while she fights Edge, and reassures her that Soto’s likely death will not destroy the Rocks Pirates.
- Maso challenges Hades over the consequences of killing Soto; Hades counters that the Watsonbergs cannot defeat his crew and distances himself from the act.
- Donovan’s contempt for Soto drives his determination to kill him, while Soto’s guardian risks himself in an attempt to break Donovan’s control.
