Ch. 81Friendly Sparring
Plot and key events
- Zhou Sining reunites with Mu Nujiao and tries awkwardly to spend more time with her. He openly says he is pursuing her, but Mu Nujiao sends him to prepare for his match.
- Jiang Shaoxu and Mu Bai arrive to invite Zhou to a team tactics session. Jiang is quietly irritated that Zhou introduces her merely as a classmate despite their shared hardships.
- The next morning, all six academies are rushed into the exchange matches. The schedule gives the six visiting schools the morning while Pearl Academy gets the afternoon, provoking resentment and a desire to prove themselves against Imperial Capital Academy.
- Ancient Capital Academy draws the first match. Its team expects a difficult fight but takes heart from Jiang Shaoxu’s Mind Element and Zhou’s strong Fire Element record.
- The first lineup is Zhou, Liu Haitao, Mu Bai, and Bai Manyin. As Zhou heads to the arena, he spots Mu Nujiao, makes an over-the-top attempt to look cool, and boasts that she is practically his girlfriend.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhou Sining is confident in combat but inexperienced and flustered in romance. He is candid about pursuing Mu Nujiao and becomes eager to perform with her watching.
- Mu Nujiao teases Zhou, then returns to her composed manner and urges him to prioritize training and rest.
- Jiang Shaoxu shows a flash of jealousy or annoyance at being introduced as a classmate rather than a close friend; she otherwise joins the team’s preparations.
- Mu Bai reacts with surprise to Zhou’s declaration but regards his romantic awkwardness as ordinary.
- Ancient Capital’s teammates encourage one another, though Bai Manyin worries that Imperial Capital’s students may be more advanced.
Significant themes
- Romantic awkwardness: Zhou’s bold declarations contrast with his lack of confidence around Mu Nujiao.
- Rivalry and pride: Imperial Capital Academy’s scheduling is perceived as an insult, fueling the visiting schools’ determination to compete.
- Teamwork and confidence: Ancient Capital’s students balance anxiety about their opponents with confidence in their own strengths.
