Background
Mobile Infantry served in the Federation garrison on Robert IV. Before the Star Dragon Empire’s invasion, the border force had little combat experience, and security at Yasin Base was lax during its Armed Forces Day celebration 11 24.
When orbital strikes hit the base, surviving Mobile Infantry regrouped with multi-legged combat vehicles and held the main road against Imperial Orbital Paratroopers 20. Elsewhere, an ambush separated D Platoon of the 2nd Mobile Infantry Company, 179th Combined Battalion, from Lieutenant Colonel Dallas’s breakout force. Its platoon leader and operations staff officer were aboard the destroyed lead vehicle 26.
Equipment
- Sabertooth Type 2 medium exoskeleton — standard equipment for a Federation Mobile Infantry soldier, powered by a gas turbine and metallic-hydrogen battery pack. Silicon carbide plates protect vital areas; powered assistance lets a fully loaded soldier run faster and jump higher 37.
- Individual weapons — typically an 8 mm Gauss rifle on the right-arm rail and either a 20 mm automatic shotgun or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher on the left. Some soldiers instead carry a rocket-powered Combat Stinger 37.
- Other battlefield weapons — shoulder-mounted launchers can deploy anti-infrared smoke and plasma grenades. Mortar teams use 120 mm weapons for indirect fire 26 40 42.
- Mongoose Mark IV vehicles — eight-wheeled armored vehicles used as troop carriers, communications relays, and reconnaissance-and-jamming platforms. Standard troop carriers mount a 40 mm chain gun and a coaxial 12 mm machine gun 27.
- Heavy guard equipment — two Mobile Infantry guarding Yasin Base’s Core Communications Room wore power armor rather than standard medium exoskeletons 14.
Combat Capabilities and Limits
- Mobility and carrying capacity — exoskeletons let infantry carry substantial weapons and supplies while moving at speeds beyond an unassisted person’s 37 42.
- Combined-arms attacks — under Amber’s command, Mobile Infantry coordinated smoke, mortar fire, electronic warfare, armored vehicles, and an infantry charge to overrun an Imperial mortar position 41 42 43.
- Vulnerability to armor — infantry weapons could damage a Holy Spirit combat vehicle’s external components but struggled to penetrate its armor. Amber assigned a Mongoose 4 to engage it instead 43.
- Reliance on command and support — D Platoon was pinned beside its vehicles after losing its lead and rear vehicles. It counterattacked after Amber took command and ordered smoke cover and a flanking maneuver 24 26.
Notable Units and Engagements
- Yasin Base defenders — held the base’s main road with multi-legged combat-vehicle support during the Imperial assault 20.
- D Platoon — survived the valley ambush, accepted Amber as temporary commander, and escaped in five remaining Mongoose Mark IV vehicles 26 27.
- Village defenders — an isolated Mobile Infantry platoon and logistics personnel were surrounded after their temporary commander fled. They accepted Amber’s command when his force restored contact 39 44.
- Village counterattack — Amber’s eighteen available Mobile Infantry helped defeat the besieging Imperial force. Three soldiers were killed and five wounded in the battle 40 46.
Relationships
- Amber — rescued and temporarily commanded D Platoon, then incorporated the village defenders into his force. His soldiers came to trust his orders after fighting under him 26 27 33 44.
- Isabel — treated D Platoon’s wounded after joining its convoy under the name Captain Margaret 27.
- Imperial Orbital Paratroopers — principal opponents in the valley ambush and the village siege 24 39.
