Bo City, Water Orchid Middle School, ninth grade, Class 4.
Classes were out. The students gathered in their usual groups, chatting about things they liked, where they planned to go on Saturday, and the difficult questions on the exam.
Amid the noisy classroom, Mo Fan sat in the back row, completely out of step with everyone else.
He sat with his hands clasped behind his head and his eyes vacant. His mouth opened and closed, but no one could tell what he was saying.
Mo Fan had no idea what had happened. As a realist, how was he supposed to accept that he had crossed into another world?
He was eighteen, a model student fresh out of high school and about to enter university and make his own contribution to society. Instead, fate had played a colossal joke on him and sent him back to middle school.
Mo Fan had read a few novels about people returning to their student days. Armed with knowledge of future business trends, they showed everyone up and became billionaires.
He had not gone quite that far, but he had mentally prepared himself to start down the road to riches.
Then he opened a textbook to review his middle school lessons, and reality smashed that dream to pieces.
Mo Fan could not understand a word of it. The four main categories of magic, how to identify types of Demon Beasts, the history of magic...
In his mind, a hundred Teacher Guos rode Red Hares across his face, Sky Piercers in hand. What the hell was this?!
Mo Fan felt as though his nine years of compulsory education and three years of high school had been for nothing. These were not normal textbooks. What normal textbook was full of magic and all this other nonsense?
While Mo Fan wrestled furiously with his thoughts, Zhang Xiaohou came over.
At the sight of him, Mo Fan felt a glimmer of hope. He grabbed Xiaohou by the shoulders and asked,
"Monkey, did you swap out my textbooks? Where the hell are my language, math, and English books?"
Zhang Xiaohou looked puzzled and asked with concern,
"Brother Fan, you haven't seemed yourself these past few days. Have you been staying up late reading science fiction again?"
"Huh?!"
Mo Fan stared at Zhang Xiaohou. If Xiaohou had looked even slightly dishonest, Mo Fan might have punched him.
The chatter around him reached his ears. As Mo Fan listened to those strange topics, he gradually calmed down, sat back down, and slumped over his desk, utterly defeated.
Zhang Xiaohou was startled by everything Mo Fan had just done. What was going on? Had he really read so many novels that something had gone wrong with him?
The bell rang, and Zhang Xiaohou had no choice but to return to his seat.
Mo Fan, meanwhile, was caught in a storm of thoughts. Little by little, he began to accept the reality that he had crossed into a world of magic.
Well, I'm here now. What else can I say?
Once he had thought it through, Mo Fan did not panic. The people around him had not changed, so it could not be that bad.
On the contrary, excitement surged through him.
Magic was something Mo Fan had never encountered. He had never even dared imagine he might come across it in the real world!
Mo Fan broke into a grin, his body trembling with excitement. Magic, Brother Fan is here!
Bang!
The loud noise made Mo Fan flinch and snapped him back to the present.
"Mo Fan, is what I'm saying that funny?"
Their homeroom teacher, Deng Yongchuan, slapped the lectern and spoke angrily.
Crap, I forgot we were in class!
Mo Fan cursed inwardly and looked up at his homeroom teacher.
"You think this is funny? Do you know what you scored this time?"
Deng Yongchuan picked up a stack of exam papers and pulled one out.
"Mo Fan, six points!"
The classroom erupted in mocking laughter.
"Mo Fan, hah!" Even Deng Yongchuan let out a laugh before continuing. "I didn't think it was possible to score as low as six on this paper."
Mo Fan paused. He remembered reading too many novels back in middle school and deliberately scoring low because he wanted to try hiding his abilities before stunning everyone.
In truth, his grades had been excellent. He could easily rank in the top three at school. He was not the hopeless student his teachers and classmates thought he was.
Mo Fan still vividly remembered the disbelief on Deng Yongchuan's face when he saw his entrance exam results, and the admiring looks from his classmates.
Back then, Mo Fan had strode out of the middle school gates full of confidence. All he had lacked was a trench coat, sunglasses, and two rows of bodyguards in black.
But Mo Fan could not argue now. In the eyes of his teachers and classmates, he was still a hopeless student.
He even agreed with them. He did not understand a thing in his textbooks! Damn it!
Deng Yongchuan sighed helplessly and said with frustration, "Mo Fan, your grades were good when you first joined my class. How did you end up like this? It's not too late to turn things around!"
"Can't you learn from your brother Mo Xie? He gets full marks every time."
At the mention of Mo Xie, the classroom erupted in cheers.
Mo Xie was the Evil Emperor, an idol to every one of them!
Mo Xie was handsome, got excellent grades, could sing, and most importantly, he was loaded!
He was the standard every boy aspired to and the man of every girl's dreams!
Deng Yongchuan waved a hand. Apparently used to this reaction, he signaled for the students to quiet down. "Now, come up and collect your papers. Mu Bai..."
At the back of the classroom, students went up one by one to collect their papers. Mo Fan remained in his seat, a strange look on his face.
His pupils tightened, his whole body trembled, and his breathing quickened. Whether he felt panic or fear was hard to tell, but more than anything, he was visibly excited.
Mo Fan drifted through the rest of the lesson. At last, the bell rang.
Deng Yongchao dismissed the class, and the classroom came alive again. The students eagerly packed their bags and left together.
Mu Bai walked over to Mo Fan. "Mo Fan, how did you score this badly? If Mo Xie finds out, he'll chew you out."
Mo Fan shot to his feet and grabbed Mu Bai by the shoulders. "Mu Bai, where is my brother right now?"
His gaze was utterly serious, without a trace of its usual carelessness.
Mo Fan's behavior startled Mu Bai. Then he gave him an odd look. "You told me a few days ago that Mo Xie was coming back today. Did you forget? What's gotten into—hey, Mo Fan!"
Before Mu Bai could finish, Mo Fan ran out of the classroom.
"Brother Fan, you forgot your bag!" Zhang Xiaohou shouted, holding up Mo Fan's schoolbag.
But Mo Fan had already vanished. He was too far away to hear Zhang Xiaohou.
"Mu Bai, what's wrong with Mo Fan?" Zhao Kunsan asked as he came over.
"How should I know?" Mu Bai said irritably. "Let's go. Xiaohou, sorry for the trouble, but could you take Mo Fan's bag home for him?"
"Sure." Zhang Xiaohou nodded.
