The man who had taken the full force of the punch slammed into the tree trunk behind him, knocking down several trees. He lay at the base of a trunk, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He no longer moved. Clearly, he was dead.
The fist, which had vanished from sight, suddenly shot back out of the man's stomach and flew toward Pain.
Everyone stared in shock and scrambled to get away, but the fist seemed to have no intention of attacking them.
It struck Pain's wrist head-on. In the blink of an eye, it reattached, as though it had never come off.
At the sight, panic spread across their faces. Every one of them looked ready to run.
Just then, someone leaped forward and shouted, "This man is a demon! We can't allow someone like him to remain in Amegakure!"
He paused, then raised his voice. "We can't back down! We have to kill him, or Amegakure will suffer. Our families and children will be in danger!"
That last line seemed to ignite their will to fight. They glared at Pain, their faces indignant and their eyes burning with anger.
Pain had already been displeased with them. Hearing those words made his voice even more scornful. "You have no right to say that! If you truly cared about Amegakure and your children, what were you doing when the other villages attacked?"
The more Pain spoke, the angrier he became. His face turned cold. "You did nothing then, so don't stand up now and talk about duty. People like you should experience pain—experience the pain your children will have to bear!"
He raised one hand and said coldly, "Five-Finger Missiles!"
The instant he spoke, all five of Pain's fingers detached from his palm and shot into the crowd
