History

During the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen directed Konoha’s response to the fighting with Sunagakure. After a Senju squad was destroyed, he called on Tsunade to join the Sand front 161. When a figure claiming to be Madara Uchiha destroyed Root and killed Danzo, Hiruzen demanded an explanation but declined to risk a battle that could cripple Konoha during the war. He subsequently ordered Root’s intelligence gathered 176. He later discovered records of Danzo’s operations and burned them 182.

Tsunade’s victory over Hanzō and the growing strength of Yin, Mikoto, and Kushina left Hiruzen uneasy: all four were close to Tsunade, concentrating considerable power around her 261 262. His judgment of Yin was also incomplete. Although he accepted reports that Yin had killed Chiyo, he assumed the boy had ambushed an injured opponent rather than won a direct fight 262.

Hiruzen’s view of Yin changed as Yin brought capable newcomers into Konoha. Initially cautious, he came to trust that they would remain loyal to the village while Yin did 571. He began considering Yin as his successor, then pressed him to accept the position despite Yin’s reluctance 571 1197 1198. At the inauguration, Hiruzen placed the Hokage robe on Yin and announced him as Fourth Hokage, with Minato Namikaze serving as Acting Hokage 1201.

Personality

Hiruzen places a high priority on Konoha’s stability. He avoids a potentially ruinous confrontation after Danzo’s death, takes Yin’s warning of a Sand attack seriously, and later accepts that Yin holds greater practical power in the village 176 671 988. His loyalty to old teammates can make him reluctant to oppose Koharu and Homura, even when their conduct undermines his authority 313 326.

He often handles political friction with humor or restraint: he ignores the Third Kazekage’s taunt during the Chunin Exams and trades familiar barbs with Yin after stepping down 533 1559. His concern for his students remains evident when he worries about the danger of Orochimaru’s undercover mission 989.
