Ch. 161Xu Feng: "Huh?"
Plot points and events
- A constable recruits Xu Feng to serve as a Spirit Suppressor during the county magistrate’s mother’s seven-day birthday rites. Xu is to remain in a pavilion near the stage, oversee offerings, and prevent wandering ghosts from disrupting the celebration. He accepts, receiving payment.
- Xu asks the constable for help obtaining the county gazetteer and learning about Fisherfolk Village. Old Ma warns that reaching the village requires lighting three incense sticks outside it, and advises Xu to avoid provoking its inhabitants—especially near the Yellow River.
- While waiting for the yamen to close, Xu considers whether Fisherfolk Village is connected to the coming Yellow River Demon Corpse. Unlike his former self, he now has foreknowledge and suspects the disaster has been preceded by clues.
- Old Ma takes Xu into the yamen’s restricted records room, where clerk Shen Jicheng provides gazetteers and historical volumes. Xu finds an account of a geomancy master who exposed the Yellow River’s riverbed, discovered a tomb beneath it, and moved its remains elsewhere.
- Further records mention an ox-shaped bronze suppressing object, a fork in the road near Fisherfolk Village, and a dangerous object relocated to an unidentified temple. Xu cannot determine where the grave or object ended up.
- Before Xu leaves at dawn, Shen reveals that Executioner Liu’s father also investigated the Yellow River’s ancient history. Shen arranges to meet Xu at the pavilion during his upcoming assignment and share something important.

- Old Ma acts as Xu’s guide and warns him about Fisherfolk Village, while downplaying the danger of the birthday assignment.
- The constable treats Xu as valuable because of his reputation, despite his youth, and helps him access the archives.
