Impenetrable darkness, flashes streaking across the night sky, dull booms that shook the earth.
Nothing seemed to have changed since the night before...
Blood still stained the corner of Hangi's mouth as he followed Grand Marshal Garkin, a knight's sword at his side.
What was happening in the depths of the night gradually came into focus.
The glimmers in the sky became dazzling spells, vicious Fel Energy, and flames that set half the heavens ablaze. The dull booms resolved into the clash of battle, shouts, shrieks, and the roar of a "tide."
That tide was a black sea pounding against the far side of the high wall. Its waves were an endless Rat Tide.
Illumination Spells hanging high in the sky lit up the City Wall and left the seething Rat Swarm outside nowhere to hide.
Countless spells, Fire Oil, Arrows, and boulders poured down beyond the City Wall.
Where spells struck, they cleared swathes of the Rat Tide, only for more rats to fill the gaps in an instant;
Fire Oil drenched the Ratfolk. Fire Arrows set it alight, turning them into shrieking balls of flame that raced about in chaos, until another wave of rats surged forward;
Tumbling boulders carved bloody paths, and Arrows felled Ratfolk by the score. More Ratfolk rushed in right behind them.
The battle at Fenris Pass was like the Battle of Hell Mountain magnified hundreds of times. Hundreds of thousands of Kingdom soldiers held the Mountain Pass, cutting down wave after wave of the Rat Tide.
But... could an Ocean fear a handful of scattered sand?
The Ratfolk had kept up this assault for three days. And these were not even their main force, let alone their elite.
"Gru, report on the battle," Grand Marshal Garkin told the Deputy Commander of the Legion.
