Biross studied the Stuen Ratfolk High Priest. So much for standing together as one... But that was fine. A divided Ratfolk people benefited everyone, Demons included.
Ratfolk included.
The Stuen Ratfolk High Priest ignored what Biross thought, or simply did not care. "It will happen within the month. You can wait."
Biross did begin to consider working with the Ratfolk.
Unlike the McKennan Ratfolk, the Stuen Ratfolk did not have their main force in the Northern Frontier, and they were poor fighters. There was no need to worry about them threatening the Demons.
And when the time came to betray them, it would cost little.
Biross flicked her forked tongue and adopted a tone of consideration. "The area near the Volcano is out of the question. I can ask Lady Lilith to give you a piece of the Northern Frontier—the old territory of Annan Reeves."
"No. It must be the Far North."
Biross frowned. "Why?"
The Stuen Ratfolk High Priest had no intention of explaining. This was different from before. Now that Biross saw a basis for cooperation, she was willing to show some goodwill.
But to Demons who could not scrape together one complete brain between a hundred of them, compromise was a sign of Devil weakness.
Biross replied, "I can't decide that. I need to ask Lady Lilith."
"The Holy Race will stay here."
"Fine, but you must remain within our sight."
The Stuen Ratfolk High Priest agreed even to that harsh demand. Biross could not tell what the Stuen Ratfolk were up to. Was there something special about this frozen land?
"Who brought you here?" Biross asked at last. She had her suspicions, but she wanted to confirm them.
"Annan Reeves."
So it was Lady Lilith's arrangement?
*Lady Lilith didn't want me to eat these Ratfolk. She
