Preliminary estimates put the toll from the airstrike at no fewer than hundreds of thousands of Ratfolk and millions of rats. Their remains and the leftover oil formed a long carpet of ash and char, flecked with dark red sparks.

The first Ratfolk to venture onto it broke through its thin crust. Their feet sank into the molten red heat beneath, and they burst into flames.

The Reconnaissance Airships returned to the Northern Great Wall and hovered two hundred meters up, beyond the Ratfolk's reach. Then they began attacking the ground below.

From ordinary muskets to Arcane Missiles, from Grease to the Living Rope Spell to a sneeze, from Fireball to Shadow Detection to curses—there was a little of everything.

Tons of spells rained down on the Rat Swarm atop the wall. It looked impressive, and the results were impressive too. Ratfolk were shocked, frozen, burned, and cursed. The unluckiest survived all that with a breath left in them, only to be bombarded with more spells.

Other Reconnaissance Airships descended over the defenders' heads and dropped large quantities of potions to restore their strength and energy.

Free City had plenty of Mage Apprentices and Alchemy Apprentices. Under the structured instruction of the Mage Tower and Free City University, every student had homework: brew a potion, inscribe a Magic Scroll, or construct a Spell Model.

As a result, Free City had accumulated a huge stock of low-level Magic Scrolls and potions.

They worked, just not as well as they should. Selling them outright would hurt Free City's reputation, while selling them cheaply as defective goods would be a waste. Using them on the Ratfolk was perfect.

As for the potions... if they had passed inspection, they weren't failures. At most, they had a few... side effects.
