In the end, Shen's Father stopped paying attention to Little Doudou, because he had already seen the divine dog Shen Bing had mentioned.
"You mean this mutt?"
"What mutt? This is a Chinese Rural Dog, okay?"
"A Chinese Rural Dog is still a mutt! Nobody wants one of these even for a few dozen yuan, and you have the nerve to ask me for a million?"
"Mine is the smartest Chinese Rural Dog there is!"
"It's still a mutt." Shen Bing's father felt he had made the trip for nothing.
Had he somehow raised a fake son? What kind of son tried to fleece his own father like this?
"Don't regret this, Dad. Big Yellow, go pour me a cup of tea." Shen Bing gave the order without a care.
Shen's Father watched, dumbstruck, as Big Yellow trotted to the water dispenser, held a glass cup between his front paws, placed it beneath the spout, and pressed the switch.
Splash, splash, splash... Steaming water poured into the glass.
"Why do you never learn? Where are the tea leaves?" Shen Bing said with a look of disdain.
Shen's Father felt as though he had been struck on the head with a club.
But the next moment left Shen's Father completely bewildered. Big Yellow froze for two seconds, then ran to the desk. Somehow, his paws pried the lid off the tea tin, and he tipped some leaves into the glass.
"Is... is that still a dog? How long did you train him?"
"Two hours," Shen Bing answered honestly.
As if I'd believe that! Shen's Father shot him a scornful look.
Still, Shen's Father had to admit that even if Shen Bing had trained the dog for a year or more, getting him to this level would have been extraordinary.
"One hundred thousand. That's my highest Gao." His father gazed at Big Yellow as if the dog were a rare treasure.
"I might as well make soup out of him. A dog this smart must be very nourishing." Shen Bing gave Big Yellow a malicious look.
Big Yellow instantly lowered his eyes, looking so pitiful that Shen Bing's father's heart ached.
"Two hundred thousand."
"I'll make soup."
"Three hundred thousand."
"Soup it is."
"Four hundred thousand."
"I—"
"Soup, my foot! Four hundred thousand for a mutt! If you weren't my son..."
"Dad, even at a million, you'd be getting a bargain. If you weren't my father, I wouldn't offer you this deal. Think about it: nobody's surprised when a Border Collie is smart. But take a mutt like this out in public, and he's the perfect way to show off. He's one of a kind, too. Rich young men love exactly that sort of thing."
When it came to business, Shen's Father was leagues ahead of Shen Bing. He just hadn't wanted to pay that much.
Now that he saw Shen Bing understood the dog's value, he stopped arguing and agreed to pay the million.
Shen's Father might not have been the most dependable parent, but he was dependable as a businessman. He immediately transferred a million yuan to Shen Bing, called Big Yellow over, and left.
Of course, Shen Bing had already told Big Yellow to go with him. Otherwise, Shen's Father might not have been able to take the dog away.
At the door, Shen's Father casually remarked, "Son, that's the money I set aside for your wedding. Don't squander it. And don't tell your mother, or she'll skin you alive."
Shen Bing stood there in a daze, watching his father stroll away.
"Tra-la-la... I'm rich now!" Shen Bing bounced around his little apartment in delight.
But his excitement lasted less than half a minute. The thought that a million yuan would buy him only one Immortal Jade made it vanish at once.
I'm still broke.
It wasn't that Shen Bing hadn't wanted to ask for more for Big Yellow. The old man's dog farm was only so big, and he had at most one or two million yuan available. Asking for more than half of that was already pushing it.
His father was usually strict about his spending money. The mere thousand yuan he got each month for living expenses made that clear.
There was a reason for it, of course. He had offended someone he shouldn't have.
What can I do with a million? Buy Immortal Jade? Forget it. That's a drop in the bucket. The best bet is to use the money to make more money.
Shen Bing looked at his phone and opened the Gate to the Immortal Realm. A tiny blue ball of light sat in his inventory.
"Over-the-Horizon Telescope Manufacturing Technology."
This technology shouldn't be too Gao-level. It's only one color, while Quantum Teleportation Technology has five.
Shen Bing didn't dare tackle Quantum Teleportation Technology yet, but the Telescope seemed worth a try.
The technology had come from analyzing the kaleidoscope-like treasure Thousand-Mile Eye had given him. Called the Eye of Gods and Demons, it could make a target a thousand miles away appear right before one's eyes.
What troubled Shen Bing was that transferring the Over-the-Horizon Telescope Manufacturing Technology out would cost six Immortal Jade.
With Immortal Jade in such short supply, he had to budget carefully. He didn't want to end up unable to afford a Teleportation Talisman when he needed one.
But now that he had a million yuan on hand, he felt more confident. He transferred the Over-the-Horizon Telescope Manufacturing Technology immediately.
Only two Immortal Jade remained in his inventory. Shen Bing forced himself to look away. Out of sight, out of mind.
He wanted to transfer the Eye of Gods and Demons out as well, but he couldn't afford it. More than a single item, Shen Bing needed technology—the goose that laid golden eggs.
After the Aperture-Opening Pill had transformed Shen Bing's brain, his ability to absorb information had improved enormously. When the Over-the-Horizon Telescope Manufacturing Technology flowed into his mind, he didn't even blink.
His expression turned serious as he sorted through the information in his head.
The Telescope technology was far simpler than Quantum Teleportation Technology. At least he could understand much of it.
That was only because his brain had been transformed, of course.
There was still plenty he didn't understand, but that was because he lacked the relevant background knowledge.
"Looks like I'll be spending more time at the Library."
The Over-the-Horizon Telescope was far more than a simple Telescope. It also involved a great deal of electronic information technology, including Image Restoration Technology and Ray Enhancement Technology...
Its most essential component, though, was Glass-processing technology.
Shen Bing was a complete novice in that field and had no idea how Gao-level it was.
But after two days at the Library, he wanted to shout, "Who else can match this?"
The Telescope might have been handheld, but it contained thirty-eight Lenses. More astonishingly, each Lens had its own properties, with performance specifications superior to anything produced by any factory in the world today.
The manufacturing process for any one type of Lens could form the basis of a fiercely competitive company.
Shen Bing had spent only one day at the library when Old Yang dragged him away.
Yang said he needed to rescue a troubled young man who was sliding further and further toward insanity.
A street food stall. Four people. One table. Four glasses of beer...
"Shen Bing, I know being treated as a backup boyfriend hurts, but you can't give up on yourself. Learn from me: setbacks only make me stronger," Wang Bo said earnestly. "When was I ever—" Shen Bing's eyes widened as he tried to object.
Sun Li cut in at once. "Shen Bing, don't bother denying it. Old Yang told us you were wandering around the library carrying a stack of books. If that isn't self-torture, what is?"
"I..."
Old Yang said, "Shen Bing, there's no need to rush into finding a job. Senior year's only just begun. We've got a whole year to waste!"
"Shut up. Are you three jerks messing with me on purpose?" Shen Bing glared at them. "First, I was never anyone's backup boyfriend. That was just a coincidence. Second, I'm not worried about finding a job. Finally, I'm planning to start my own business, and I've been studying at the library these past few days. Could you guys be serious for once?"
As Shen Bing spoke, Wang Bo, who sat beside him, reached out and felt his forehead. "Strange. No fever. Are you okay?"
Shen Bing deflated. These guys seemed convinced something was wrong with him.
Forget it. No point explaining. They'll see for themselves soon enough.
"Oh, right, Sun Li. You're from Rongcheng. Do you know where I can find a Glass factory? Ideally one that both makes and processes Glass," Shen Bing asked.
Sun Li and the other two stared at him, baffled. That was quite a leap. One moment they were talking about him being a backup boyfriend; how had they ended up discussing Glass factories?
The three exchanged glances and saw the same thought in one another's eyes.
There really is something wrong with him!
"What are you planning to do? Get a job at a Glass Factory?" Old Yang asked. It seemed unlikely, but it was the most plausible explanation he could think of.
Shen Bing raised his eyes. "Why would I get a job? I want to be the boss. I'm thinking of buying a Glass factory and experimenting with Glass."
Old Yang and the other two stared at Shen Bing. He had definitely lost his mind.
"Shen Bing, isn't a Glass Factory a bit low-end? They're all over the country. Even tiny backwater counties have one or two. You think you can break into that market?"
Old Yang, the top student, tried to reason with him. "You'd be better off going back and raising pigs."
“All right, setting aside whether you can make high-end Gao Glass, even an ordinary Glass Factory would cost tens of millions to acquire. Do you have that kind of money?”
"Uh..." Could he say he had a million?
For the past few days, he had focused entirely on building up his knowledge of Glass and related electronics. He hadn't considered the cost of the equipment at all.
"I'll look it up!" Shen Bing pulled out his phone and started searching online.
Yang and the others were left speechless.
Was this a joke? He was looking it up now? Looking up what? He'd decided to open a factory without knowing how much money it would take?
Could he be any less prepared?
