Background and History

Chen Cuo comes from a modern era and takes the place of Chen Fangqing, who died shortly after receiving the title Marquis of Linru County. Fangqing’s grandfather, Chen Xiuxian, was the brother of Southern Chen’s founding emperor, Chen Baxian. Left with only fragments of Fangqing’s memories, Chen Cuo initially stays within his residence and tries to avoid exposing how little he knows of the family 1.

At first, he doubts accounts of immortals and spirits. His younger sister Chen Jiao’s animated paper crane makes him reconsider what kind of world he has entered. He also resolves to honor Fangqing’s family obligations without continuing to submit to every household demand 1 2.

His cultivation draws the attention of monks, Daoists, the emperor, and political figures seeking his help against Hou Andu. Chen Cuo accepts a role in the plan to confront Hou, gains access to the Eastern Observatory’s cultivation texts, and ultimately leaves the mortal household for Great Hua Mountain. There, Daoyinzi accepts him as a disciple and gives him the Daoist name Master Soaring 58 85 125 128.

Chen Cuo’s later investigations increasingly connect cultivation to human thought, history, dynastic Fortune, and the lives of ordinary people. In Huainan, he begins assembling these domains into a Human Dao path. He continues to investigate mysteries surrounding his past, his name, and the Little Gourd 387 598.

Appearance

Chen Cuo initially inhabits Fangqing’s youthful, handsome body. Poor sleep leaves conspicuous dark circles beneath his eyes; as his cultivation develops, his bearing becomes markedly more composed and imposing 1 63.
