Ch. 61A Name Entered His Thoughts, and His Mind Shook
Plot points and events
- When Chen Cuo thinks of the Primordial Heavenly Venerable, his Mind Palace begins to collapse. Qiuyuzi warns that some names carry dangerous cause and effect. Chen Cuo uses his Wisdom Sword to cut away the thoughts, then secretly places them in the Human Thought Network as bait for the Evil Ghost, which may be drawn to them.
- Qiuyuzi explains that Chen Cuo’s Nine-Dragon Divine Fire has gathered in his heart, leaving his Five Elements unbalanced. The fire is consuming his blood and qi and will grow harder to control, eventually threatening his life and cultivation.
- Qiuyuzi offers three ways forward:
- Worst: Remove the fire by washing away Chen Cuo’s cultivation, at the cost of lasting damage and reduced aptitude.
- Middling: Switch to a true-cultivation method, reach Longevity quickly, then discard the heart fire as a false element.
- Best: Find an exquisite Qi Refining method and rare treasures containing the Five Elements, using them to restore a balanced path. Qiuyuzi says Kunlun could provide both if Chen Cuo joins the sect.
- Before Chen Cuo can decide whether to accept, a young Daoist from the Cloudsky Sect, Nanmingzi, arrives and warns him not to be misled: Qiuyuzi’s explanation was true, but incomplete.
Character development
- Chen Cuo shows strong mental discipline by stabilizing his Mind Palace and turning the severed thoughts into a trap for the Evil Ghost.
- He reveals that Longevity matters more to him than preserving his current cultivation. He sees cultivation as a means to keep progressing, not as status or power, and values a steady purpose over rushed advancement.
- His perceptiveness is evident as he quickly understands the true-cultivation path and recognizes the practical barriers to Qiuyuzi’s “best” option. He also remains wary of joining Kunlun, suspecting Qiuyuzi’s interest may be tied to his supposed reincarnated identity.
- Qiuyuzi’s respect for Chen Cuo grows as he sees his insight and resolve. The Peachwood Sword likewise praises his clarity.
Character interactions
- Qiuyuzi acts as mentor and recruiter: he explains the danger, lays out the options, and presents Kunlun as a way to obtain the resources for the best path.
- Chen Cuo questions Qiuyuzi’s advice rather than accepting it blindly, while the Peachwood Sword adds commentary and praise.
- Nanmingzi’s interruption challenges Qiuyuzi’s account and introduces a new source of uncertainty just as Chen Cuo is weighing his choices.
Significant themes
- Longevity and purpose: Chen Cuo’s central aim is continued life and progress; power and accumulated cultivation matter less than preserving the chance to pursue the immortal path.
- Balance and consequences: The heart fire’s growth shows the danger of an unbalanced foundation and of short-term fixes that worsen the underlying problem.
- Knowledge versus action: Understanding a cultivation principle is not enough; Chen Cuo recognizes that the path must also preserve his state of mind.
- Trust and hidden motives: Qiuyuzi’s offer may be beneficial, but Chen Cuo questions what Kunlun truly wants from him, and Nanmingzi’s warning suggests the guidance may have omitted crucial details.
