Ch. 301Blood Sea Formation
Key plot points and events
- Tang Changsheng breaks through the magically sealed gate of Skanda Temple by driving his Ritual Sword into it while his companions chant. The Primordial Yang Divine Lamp burns away the gate’s illusion, revealing a hall filled with corpses and blood.
- Inside, the monk Haifeng sits before the altar, bleeding from every orifice. A blood-colored cloud above him shows that he is gathering enormous Blood Essence and Killing Intent through a sinister ritual.
- Haifeng’s voice shifts between two distinct personalities: one appears to be the monk, asking Tang to cut off his head, while the other is a hostile fiend determined to kill him. The two souls are fighting for control of Haifeng’s body.
- The corpses rise and advance. Tang’s frightened men begin to flee, threatening the group’s protective formation, but he stops them and forces them to resume chanting.
- Tang hurls Solar Ghost-Slaying Talismans, which destroy the animated corpses. When another talisman fails to pierce Haifeng’s blood-cloud shield, Tang reveals a stronger attack: he projects a radiant Divine General from the lamp’s power and sends it against Haifeng.
- The fiend gains the upper hand and unleashes the accumulated Blood Baleful Intent, engulfing the Divine General. The chapter ends with Tang’s attack facing a formidable counter.
Character developments and interactions
- Tang Changsheng remains composed and commanding despite the horrors. He improvises when the lamp weakens, keeps his men from breaking formation, and reveals that he prepared a more powerful technique.
- Haifeng is caught between his own will and a demon within him. His plea for Tang to decapitate him suggests he wants the fiend stopped, while the fiend mocks Tang and boasts of its power.
- Tang’s companions are badly shaken by the sight and stench of the slaughter. Their chanting strengthens the lamp, but their panic makes them a danger to the plan; Tang restores order through forceful commands.
Significant themes
- Courage and discipline under terror: The men’s collective chanting sustains the lamp, while panic threatens everyone’s survival.
- Sacrifice and the cost of power: The formation is fueled by bloodshed on a mass scale, presenting the ritual as profoundly cruel and corrupt.
- Inner conflict: Haifeng’s body becomes the battleground between a desperate human will and a murderous supernatural force.
- Limits of preparation and power: Tang’s tools can overcome lesser threats, but the fiend’s blood magic pushes his defenses to their limit.
