Ch. 701Heavenly Net Locks the Netherworld, Part Two
Key plot points and events
- Tang Changsheng helps refine the formation banners while discreetly continuing to refine the Ghost General. Yuan Zicheng, impressed by Tang’s skill and unusually strong Dao Heart, regrets that he belongs to a small sect rather than a powerful one.
- At moonrise, the group completes the ritual for a partial Heavenly Net Locks the Netherworld Formation. The moonlight reaches beneath Ten-Thousand-Ghost Shoal, causing violent tremors and revealing a vast, spiderweb-like net for an instant.
- A Ghost God of the Tribal Stockade Barbarians attacks from underground, shaking the formation and threatening to disrupt the banners. Tang steadies his twelve banners with the Primordial Yang Divine Lamp’s Wishfire; Yuan and the other cultivators struggle to hold theirs.
- The formation catches the Ghost God and drains its power into the banners. Although some banners break and the strain nearly overwhelms Tang, the captive entity is eventually exhausted.
- Tang realizes that the formation grows stronger by absorbing its enemies’ power, making his task easier—and more dangerous—as the work continues.
Character developments and interactions
- Tang Changsheng demonstrates increasing confidence and endurance. His Manifestation Realm Spirit Terrace, reinforced by the Divine Lamp, lets him withstand pressure that nearly defeats the other cultivators. He also views the formation’s soul-devouring methods with unease, but pragmatically recognizes the political power of acting under the Heavenly Court’s “righteous” authority.
- Yuan Zicheng admires Tang’s talent and Dao Heart, while expressing sympathy that Tang lacks the backing of a great sect. He shares responsibility for most of the banners.
- The other Rogue Cultivators are far less capable of bearing the formation’s strain, highlighting Tang’s strength and the limits of their collective effort.
- Tang coordinates with Wishfire, directing it to stabilize a banner when the first impact hits.
Significant themes
- Talent versus institutional advantage: Tang’s ability is exceptional, but Yuan believes sect affiliation determines how far a cultivator can rise.
- Power and moral legitimacy: The Heavenly Court’s formation openly consumes an enemy’s power, prompting Tang to question its cruelty. He recognizes that authority and the label of “righteous cause” shape how violence is judged.
- Strength through conflict: The formation becomes more powerful by absorbing its captured enemy, turning resistance into further fuel.
