Ch. 1321Fierce in Appearance, Faint of Heart
Plot points and events
- A Demon attacks Tang Changsheng with a feint from the front while a second attacker ambushes him from behind with Mysterious Yin Black Baleful Qi, a substance deadly even to powerful immortals.
- Tang sees through the deception using his heightened perception, and his Yin-Yang Netherworld Sacred Coin absorbs the Baleful Qi, saving him.
- Angered by the near-fatal attack, Tang strikes with Gan Jiang and Mo Ye, killing the ambusher in one blow.
- Although the strike nearly empties his Dharma Power, Tang taunts the remaining Demon. The Demon pretends to attack, then tries to flee, but Tang sees through his bluff and sends a weak sword strike after him.
- Realizing Tang is nearly spent, the Demon turns to attack from Tang’s shadow. Tang remains unnervingly calm as the Demon’s shadow closes around him—only for it to find empty space and be pulled toward Tang by a powerful, unexplained suction.
Character developments
- Tang demonstrates exceptional insight and composure, but the ambush exposes that even his perception cannot prevent every danger; without his Sacred Coin, he would have died.
- His close call turns his anger into a firm resolve to kill the surviving Demon. Though low on Dharma Power, he uses confidence and deception to control the encounter.
- The Demon shifts from contempt and rage to fear, then overconfidence when he believes Tang is exhausted. His aggression and suspicion ultimately lead him into Tang’s trap.
Themes
- Appearance versus reality: The attackers’ feint, the Demon’s threatening bravado, and Tang’s apparent vulnerability all conceal the true situation.
- Perception and strategy: Tang’s ability to see through disguises and ambushes gives him an edge, while the Demon’s misjudgments make him vulnerable.
- Courage, fear, and deception: The Demon is “fierce in appearance, faint of heart,” while Tang uses calm confidence to disguise his depleted strength.
- Preparedness and limits: Tang survives through his artifact, but the encounter also shows that his own power has finite reserves.
Character interactions
- Tang calmly challenges the hidden attacker and then taunts the surviving Demon, provoking him into abandoning his escape.
- The Demon’s companion is killed before the two can capitalize on their coordinated attack.
- Tang and the Demon engage in a battle of feints and judgments: the Demon mistakes Tang’s weak sword strike for weakness, while Tang’s still-unexplained trap turns the Demon’s attack against him.
