In the boundless darkness, Graz'zt had just recovered from blindness when he saw Demogorgon launch a sneak attack on Orcus. Surprise flashed in his eyes.

Ruled by their chaotic nature, demons of the Abyss had a habit of pulling absurd stunts and stabbing their allies in the back. From the lowliest demon to the mightiest Demon Lord, all had a proud history of attacking their own side in the middle of a battle.

For a Demon Lord, there were only two ways to rise in rank.

One was to drag other Planes into the Abyss, strengthening its power and earning a reward from the Abyssal Consciousness that would raise his standing.

The other was to kill another Demon Lord and seize the Authority granted by that lord's layer of the Abyss—what Mages elsewhere called a "virtual divine spark"—to strengthen his own standing.

Compared with tearing apart the Sevenfold Heavenly Mountain and dragging one of its layers into the Abyss, ambushing an "ally" who had left his own territory and seizing his virtual divine spark was plainly easier.

What surprised Graz'zt was how quickly Demogorgon had struck. He had not even had a chance to make his own move.

Ambushed by Demogorgon, Orcus flew into a rage and began struggling wildly. His enormous body thrashed as he tried to break free.

But no matter how hard he fought, he could not escape Demogorgon's grip. All he could do was roar.

What a shame...

Graz'zt had long planned to ambush Orcus. If he seized Orcus's Authority, he could surpass Demogorgon and become the strongest demon. The title of Demon Prince would then be his.

As Graz'zt lamented his missed chance, he suddenly felt a burning gaze settle on him.

He turned and saw the Lord of Dawn approaching.
