It was lunchtime.
Teacher Liu joined the principal, vice principal, dean, and other school leaders in warmly hosting a visiting teacher from Ling'an Academy.
After lunch, they returned to school. As Xiaoxiao's homeroom teacher, Teacher Liu led the way, while the school leaders walked behind her with the teacher surnamed Zhan. The large group chatted and laughed as they headed for Xiaoxiao's classroom.
The students were still eating. Most ate in the cafeteria, while a few brought their food back to the classroom.
School rules forbade eating in classrooms.

Teacher Liu knew the girl would be eating in the classroom. As they walked, she introduced her to the tall, thin Teacher Zhan. "Ning Ji is a very frugal girl. I know the students in my class fairly well. She rarely buys food at the cafeteria. She used to leave school at lunchtime now and then, perhaps to eat at home. But at the start of this semester, her older sister was specially admitted to Ling'an Academy. Heh, your Ling'an Academy, as it happens. She was admitted through the Spell Principles Competition too."
"What a coincidence." Teacher Zhan already knew that. "Please go on, Teacher Liu."
"Oh, right..." Teacher Liu paused. "Anyway, since this semester started, she hasn't gone home for lunch, but she doesn't go to the cafeteria either. Unless the cafeteria happens to have Shredded Potatoes, the cheapest dish, that day."
"Is Ning Ji's family struggling?"
