Ch. 41A Mortal Heart
Plot points and events
- On Mid-Autumn Festival, Chen Shu visits Professor Shi Qian and brings homemade mooncakes. He asks Shi to help analyze flaws in a new version of Bodyguard Divine Light, which appears to contain an older component linked to Thousand Mechanisms Art.
- Shi agrees to study the spell under the guise of academic research. He is stunned when Chen Shu says he expects to finish solidifying Thousand Mechanisms Art within days—far faster than Shi’s estimates.
- After Chen Shu leaves, Shi checks his university records. He discovers Chen’s entrance-test spiritual-power aptitude was perfect, though Chen had previously described himself as only at the peak of the Second Tier. Shi realizes Chen had not actually concealed the truth from him and reflects warmly on him.
- Chen meets Ning Qing and takes her shopping for ingredients. She silently studies the people around them—and Chen—while he teases her, chooses food, and gets her to select seafood.
- On the ride home, Chen takes an abrupt curb drop, knocking their helmets together. Ning Qing worries about the groceries and has to calm herself using the Stillheart Way.
- At home, Ning Qing watches Chen cook while Banxia sleeps on the sofa. She asks where he learned to cook. Their exchange turns flirtatious when Chen jokes that she owes him for putting an arm around him.
Character developments and interactions
- Chen Shu is confident and playful, both in his rapid progress with cultivation and in his casual teasing of Ning Qing. His cooking and care in choosing a festive meal show a comfortable domestic side.
- Shi Qian moves from surprise at Chen’s extraordinary pace to quiet affection and respect. Seeing Chen’s records reassures him that the young man has been candid, even if not explicit.
- Ning Qing remains observant and reserved, but her curiosity about Chen and her willingness to ask personal questions suggest growing ease and closeness. She responds to his provocations mostly with silence, though she accepts his joking bargain.
- Chen and Ning Qing share an increasingly familiar, lightly flirtatious dynamic: he directs their shopping and teases her, while she follows along, watches him closely, and enters his personal space in the kitchen.
- Banxia remains sleepy and largely disengaged, briefly roused by the food’s aroma before going back to sleep.
Significant themes
- Home and belonging: Mid-Autumn’s association with reunion evokes Chen’s longing for his former-life family, softened by the kindness of his present family and friends.
- Everyday life alongside the extraordinary: Advanced spells and cultivation coexist with mooncakes, grocery shopping, cooking, and teasing.
- Observation and intimacy: Ning Qing studies ordinary people and Chen in particular; her quiet attention contrasts with Chen’s expressive, playful manner.
- Trust and understated affection: Shi’s recognition of Chen’s honesty and the easy domestic rapport between Chen and Ning Qing show bonds deepening through small, ordinary moments.
