"Lu Mingfei, have you already gone to your Cassell interview?"
Meng Chuan steered the red Ferrari with one hand as he asked Lu Mingfei, who sat in the passenger seat.
"I went to the interview. I've already agreed to join." Lu Mingfei nodded. It wasn't something he could avoid.
"But..." Lu Mingfei looked a little odd. "I went there, but I didn't actually do the interview."
Meng Chuan shot him a strange look. "Tell the whole story in one go, or I'll throw you out!"
"Oh!"
"I got there and told the two interviewers straight out: I believe in aliens, I believe in superpowers, and I agree to join your academy. Hello, seniors. Goodbye, seniors."
Meng Chuan pictured Lu Mingfei deliberately putting on a cold, haughty expression and the two interviewers staring at him in bewilderment. He burst out laughing.
"You're one overbearing Loser! Hahahaha."
At the Regent Hotel, Nono was reporting to Professor Goodman what she had seen yesterday.
The elderly professor Cassell Academy had sent specifically to recruit Lu Mingfei wore a grave expression.
"We miscalculated..."
Goodman looked at Nono and slowly delivered his verdict.
"I never expected Lu Mingfei to be so unusual. I shouldn't have brought you. Chu Zihang might have worked better! He's quite a handsome young man himself..."
Nono's face darkened. She slapped the table and shot to her feet.
"Professor, Lu Mingfei already agreed to join the academy! It wouldn't have mattered whom you sent!"
"Oh, right, right. We've settled everything with his uncle and aunt. Just look at my memory." Professor Goodman showed no embarrassment. Instead, he stroked his chin thoughtfully.
"But once Lu Mingfei enrolls, I could recommend that he join the Lionheart Club. Weren't those two schoolmates? That would give Lu Mingfei an even better chance!"
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Nono pounded the table and stared at the old man with his dangerous line of thought.
"Professor, you're focusing on the wrong thing! Forget handsome young men. That man yesterday said Lu Mingfei was S-Class!"
Goodman remained perfectly calm. He looked at Nono and waved a hand.
"The principal sent me here to recruit Lu Mingfei. Lu Mingfei has agreed, so the principal's mission is complete. As for everything else, trust the principal."
Goodman placed deliberate emphasis on "trust the principal."
"Fine. I only wanted to warn you!" Seeing how confident Goodman was, Nono said no more. None of this had much to do with her anyway.
"Professor, I'm going to get breakfast. What should I bring you?"
"Girls shouldn't eat too much. It'd be terrible if you lost your figure! Bring me soy milk and fried dough sticks. They're quite tasty!"
"Someone would still want me if I lost my figure! Since when did you, an old foreign man, start eating fried dough sticks?"
Nono slammed the door and headed downstairs to buy the foreign gentleman his fried dough sticks from a street stall.
After Nono left, Goodman sat on the sofa for a while, silently counting down. When he reached a certain number, he sprang to the window. Nono had already appeared by the roadside. With a swish, he pulled the curtains shut.
The old professor took out his phone and dialed a number. Before long, the call connected.
"Hello, Principal? It's me. Hello? Principal, can you hear me?" Goodman kept his voice very low.
"I can hear you, Professor. I may be old, but I'm not deaf yet." On the other end was Cassell Academy's principal, the most steadfast and iron-blooded dragon slayer, Hilbert Jean Angers.
"Principal, there's something I need to tell you."
"Has something happened to our S-Class? Has he changed his mind about joining the academy?" Angers raised his voice. If that was the case, it would be disastrous. He would never allow Lu Mingfei to stay out of Cassell College. If it came to that, he might have to resort to special measures!
Angers began considering whether to borrow Caesar's Lace Girl Corps and send the entire force across the ocean to persuade Lu Mingfei.
"No, Lu Mingfei hasn't changed his mind. He's still very willing to join our academy. I've been working on him every day, going to his house without even eating breakfast so we can talk. He's looking forward to life at the academy now," Goodman said, shaking his head. The implication was that, thanks to his efforts, the S-Class felt such affection for the academy that it seemed like a second home.
"Oh? Thank you for the effort, Professor!" Angers sounded surprised. Clearly, he had never realized he had such talent under his command. "When you get back, Professor, I'll give you a raise."
"Haha, it's what I should do. Huh? A raise? Wouldn't that be a little inappropriate?" Goodman was quietly pleased by the principal's praise. As for the raise, he didn't much care whether he got one.
Angers named a figure over the phone.
"What? That much? All right! Principal, I'll move into Lu Mingfei's house from now on!" Goodman immediately pledged to carry out every task the principal gave him. At the same time, he understood why the Board of Trustees objected to the academy's spending.
"So, Professor, was there something urgent you called about?" Angers asked, sounding more relaxed. As long as Lu Mingfei was fine, everything else was a minor problem.
"Principal, a stranger appeared beside Lu Mingfei yesterday. They seemed very close."
"A man or a woman? It's normal for Lu Mingfei to have a friend or two." Angers was puzzled. Was this urgent enough to interrupt his work bringing money into the academy?
"A man, a man. How would Lu Mingfei have a girl around him?" Goodman sounded as though the answer were self-evident. Angers found himself nodding in agreement.
"No, Principal, I didn't call just to disturb you. There was something strange about the man. He said right in front of Lu Mingfei that Lu Mingfei was the organization's S-Class! Nono couldn't find any record of the man before he appeared at the cinema!" Disbelief colored Goodman's voice. "It's as if he suddenly appeared in this world. Lu Mingfei shouldn't know someone like that."
Goodman said nothing about Lu Mingfei's changes over the past two months. He had already reported them to Angers.
As soon as Angers heard this, he used his authority to have Nono pull up last night's footage from the cinema. He also asked her for the man's records. The results were exactly as Goodman had described.
Apart from a few videos from last night, there was no information about the man at all. Yet Lu Mingfei clearly knew him well.
"Professor, why didn't you tell me last night?"
"Principal, I thought you had everything under control." Hearing that something was amiss, Goodman spoke with sudden caution.
Angers fell silent. He wanted to say something but had no idea what. I don't have that much confidence in myself!
"Professor, get Lu Mingfei enrolled as soon as possible." Angers hung up and stared at Meng Chuan's face in the video.
There were quite a few people who could evade Nono's searches and knew Lu Mingfei was S-Class. But this man was definitely not one of them.
"Who exactly are you?"
A black card danced between Angers's fingers, sending knife-sharp currents of air through the room.
