Ch. 261Heavenly Emperor Talks
Plot and events
- Meng Chuan asks why Shi Hao has appeared to speak with him. Shi Hao reveals he has crossed the Heavens, passed through the Sacrificial Sea and entered the Calamity Land, aiming for the uncanny’s ancestral land.
- Shi Hao explains that the uncanny have many Immortal Emperors—called End-of-the-Road beings—and that such beings can return if traces or memories of them persist.
- The Corpse Immortal Emperor, whom Shi Hao once killed, is dead but could be revived. Shi Hao is considering bringing him back because he was originally on their side, corrupted through the uncanny’s schemes, and might fight them once cleansed.
- The uncanny vastly outnumber their opponents: Shi Hao estimates they may have more than twenty Immortal Emperors. Worse, they revive far faster than ordinary Immortal Emperors, making the conflict feel nearly unwinnable.
- Shi Hao plans to investigate the ancestral land and find or destroy the source of their rapid revivals. He senses multiple terrifying Ancestors there, likely stronger than any Immortal Emperor he has faced.
- Shi Hao admits he is unsure he will survive. He compares the mission to his earlier journey into the Foreign Realm, when he was prepared to die.
- Meng Chuan asks whether Shi Hao has come to make his final arrangements. The chapter ends before Shi Hao answers.
Character development and interactions
- Shi Hao reveals the scale of the threat and his willingness to consider reviving a former enemy for the greater cause. Despite his confidence that he can eventually defeat the uncanny, he is candid about the danger and his own uncertainty.
- Meng Chuan is shocked by the uncanny’s numbers and revival advantage. He empathizes with Shi Hao’s long history of hardship, while also recognizing the gravity of this mission.
- Their conversation is frank and familiar: Meng Chuan probes Shi Hao’s motives and concern for help, while Shi Hao wonders how much Meng Chuan knows about his past. Meng Chuan admits he knows events from Shi Hao’s childhood up to his entry into the Heavens.
Significant themes
- Overwhelming odds and endurance: Shi Hao faces enemies who vastly outnumber him and return repeatedly, yet believes persistence may eventually turn the tide.
- Sacrifice and uncertain survival: Even supreme power does not spare Shi Hao from hardship or the possibility of death.
- Redemption and uneasy alliances: Shi Hao considers restoring the Corpse Immortal Emperor, setting aside past suffering to reclaim a potential ally.
- Power and vulnerability: Immortal Emperor status is immense, but it does not guarantee victory against stronger forces or prevent loss and despair.
