Konoha Hospital.

The door to the hospital room stood half-open, and the white curtains stirred gently in the breeze. Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a rectangle of light on the floor, its edges traced by the window frame.

Shisui Uchiha sat on the bed with his back against the wall and his hands at his sides.

Thick bandages covered his eyes, running from the bridge of his nose around to the back of his head, where they were tied in a knot. The white gauze had a faint sheen in the sunlight, and pale yellow medicine had seeped around its edges.

The room was quiet.

A cup of water sat on the bedside table, long since gone cold. A cane leaned against the table. A nurse had prepared it for him, but Shisui had no intention of using it.

He raised his right hand and felt around the bedside table. His fingers touched the cup. He paused, then moved on. He found the cane, paused again, and moved on.

He found his Ninja Tool Pouch.

His fingers slipped inside and touched the grip of a Kunai. The metal was cold and smooth, and the cloth wrapped around the grip was damp with sweat.

He drew the Kunai from the pouch.

He turned it in his hand until the blade faced up, then pressed it against his throat.

Cold metal touched his skin. His Adam's apple bobbed beneath the edge.

Shisui pressed his lips into a thin line. The muscles in his jaw tightened.

As an Uchiha, he could not accept becoming blind!

He used to comfort the little blind kid in the clan all the time. Now Shisui realized all those comforting words had been useless. They hadn't helped a damn bit!

The Sharingan was everything to an Uchiha.
