In a secret chamber beneath the Underking Cathedral on Terra, the Cult of the Underworld Archbishop, still sporting a balding hairstyle, handed him his new dog tag. The words "Church Deacon" had been changed to "Cardinal."

"May the Underking bless you."

The archbishop said gravely. John accepted the dog tag with equal solemnity. At the time, both of them believed the Underking did not exist, but the ritual still had to be observed.

They exchanged a few pleasantries before the archbishop fixed John with his deep, unblinking eyes.

"Congratulations, John Fabian."

Samuel said, a teasing smile curling at the corner of his mouth.

"I have heard of your accomplishments. You are a clever man, so I do not think I need remind you how to make the Cult of the Underworld great. You know, every few appointments, there is always one whose thinking is not quite so flexible."
