Less than fifteen minutes after Shrek's first match ended, someone came to summon Bai Jin to the VIP stand.

The messenger wore court attire and spoke politely, but his gaze lingered on Bai Jin's face several times.

"His Majesty and Sect Master Ning wish to see Mr. Bai."

Bai Jin pointed at himself. "Just me?"

"Bishop Salas will be there as well."

"Then I'd better bring something to eat."

The court attendant failed to see the connection, but Bai Jin had already picked up the box of pastries on Flender's table.

Flender chased him a few steps. "Those came from the VIP stand!"

"I'm taking them back."

The lounge behind the VIP stand was quiet, its heavy curtains shutting out the cheers outside. Emperor Xue Ye sat in the main seat, with Ning Fengzhi to his left and Salas to his right. Xue Qinghe stood behind his father, gentle in manner, every inch the flawless imperial crown prince.

The first thing Bai Jin saw when he entered was the candy on the table.

Xue Qinghe nudged the dish toward him. "I thought you might like these, Mr. Bai."

"Your Highness certainly knows how to look after people."

Their eyes met for an instant, then parted. Neither said more.

Ning Fengzhi smiled. "Shrek gave an impressive showing today, and Rongrong has made great progress. You've put a great deal of effort into teaching her, my young friend."

"Uncle Ning pays promptly, so I teach happily."

Emperor Xue Ye chuckled. "There can't be many people in all of Heaven Dou whom Sect Master Ning would trust with his daughter. I hear you're also with Spirit Hall?"

"I collect their stipend and fight for them now and then."

Salas's eyebrow twitched.

He closed the roster beside him and spoke in a low voice.
