Ch. 21Beaten to Death Sooner or Later
Plot points and events
- Tang Hao attempts to heal his long-standing injuries by swallowing the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot and entering the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well.
- The herbs stabilize his damaged meridians long enough for him to confront the Angel Soul Power embedded near his heart. He uses the Clear Sky Hammer and his nine Soul Rings to force it out, while the spring’s opposing forces help repair the damage.
- Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan fear he may have died when blood bubbles rise. Dugu Bo refuses to disturb the dangerous waters, though he remains ready to intervene.
- Tang Hao drives the foreign power into his right arm, where a golden manifestation erupts from the spring and is destroyed by the Clear Sky Hammer.
- He emerges alive. His injuries are greatly improved, and using Soul Power no longer triggers the severe pain in his chest.
- Before leaving, Tang Hao asks Dugu Bo to keep the Blue Silver Grass safe. He plans to visit his son, Tang San, in Nuoding City, then meet some old friends.
Character developments and interactions
- Tang Hao shows determination to live and make use of the life he has inherited, rather than surrendering to pain and despair. His recovery restores his confidence that he can fight.
- Dugu Bo’s crude teasing masks genuine concern: he protects the Blue Silver Grass, keeps watch over Tang Hao, and is visibly relieved when he survives.
- Tang Hao calls Dugu Bo his friend. The unexpected remark affects Dugu Bo, who has never been addressed that way, though he hides his reaction behind his usual gruffness.
- Their friendship is expressed through constant insults and jokes. Dugu Yan witnesses their rough-edged affection and is sent away when the situation becomes dangerous.
Significant themes
- Choosing to live: Tang Hao rejects the despair associated with his inherited memories and commits to his future.
- Trust and friendship: Dugu Bo and Tang Hao show care through actions more readily than words.
- Pain, healing, and renewal: The ordeal removes the source of Tang Hao’s worst suffering and parallels the Blue Silver Grass’s gradual growth.
