Millennium Soul Beasts Pulled Sneak Attacks Too

Soul Hunting Forest.

The light dimmed as soon as they entered.

The reason was simple: the trees here grew thick and sturdy, their branches and leaves spreading dense overhead.

Every other kind of vegetation flourished just as wildly.

"Linfei, this is the Soul Hunting Forest. Stay close to me. You must not go more than five paces away."

Once they entered the Soul Hunting Forest, Director Su's expression grew grave as he warned Huo Linfei.

"Okay, Director Su."

Huo Linfei nodded. He understood the danger well enough.

He had some confidence in his strength, but he didn't know what sort of enemies he could handle. Without a proper comparison, there was no way to tell. Tang San and Xiao Wu, those two little kids, didn't count.

They walked for nearly half an hour without finding a suitable Soul Beast.

Either its attributes were wrong, or it was a little too young.

Neither of them was in a hurry. They both knew this was normal.

The odds of finding a suitable Soul Beast the moment they entered were tiny. Most of the time, it took a good deal of searching.

Rustle, rustle...

Something moved through the grass—a Soul Beast.

"Careful. Stay close to me."

At the sound, Director Su turned to Huo Linfei.

Huo Linfei nodded and instinctively edged closer.

The next moment, a silver-gray gorilla emerged from the grass. Its scarlet eyes watched the two humans warily, and it bared its teeth from time to time.

"Looks like a Silverback Gorilla around thirteen years old. It isn't much of a threat, but we still need to be careful. I'll use my Soul Power to drive it off."

Director Su explained this to Huo Linfei. As he spoke, he prepared to reveal his Soul Rings and release the aura of a Soul Elder.

Just then, Huo Linfei interrupted him.

"Director Su, let me try."

"No. It's too dangerous."

Director Su refused without hesitation.

A Soul Scholar without a Soul Ring could fight a low-level Soul Beast under fifteen years old, but the risk was still enormous. Being able to fight one was no guarantee of winning.

He couldn't let his student take that risk.

"Director Su, it's fine. You're right here, aren't you? Let me try. If I can't handle it, you can step in."

"No—"

Before he could finish, Huo Linfei had already charged forward. Director Su was about to stop him when he noticed, to his surprise, how fast the boy was. That wasn't speed a Soul Master of his level should have been able to muster.

Didn't he say he wanted to follow the Power Attack System? How is he so fast?

Seeing this, Director Su gave up on stopping him. With speed like that and Director Su standing nearby, there shouldn't be too much trouble.

Even so, Director Su stayed on high alert. If anything seemed wrong, he would step in at once.

By then, Huo Linfei had already engaged the Silverback Gorilla.

Without a Soul Ring or Soul Skill, all Huo Linfei could use against the Soul Beast were plain, unadorned punches and kicks.

The Silverback Gorilla flew into a rage at the sight of a little brat daring to swagger up to it. It beat its chest with both fists and threw back its head in a long roar!

Bang!

The Silverback Gorilla brought down a fist and smashed straight through a tree as thick as an arm!

But it hadn't hit Huo Linfei. Instead, it took a kick from him.

That seemingly feeble kick sent its hulking body stumbling two steps backward.

The Silverback Gorilla froze. Director Su, watching from the side, stared in disbelief too.

What on earth is going on with this kid? His Martial Soul is ordinary. Even with Innate Full Soul Power, this is ridiculous! His speed was one thing, but where did that strength come from?

Director Su even began to wonder whether the people at Spirit Hall had certified Huo Linfei's Martial Soul incorrectly.

Unable to keep up with Huo Linfei's speed, the Silverback Gorilla could only take the blows. After enough hits, it covered its head and fled like a rat.

The little brat couldn't kill it, but every punch and kick still hurt.

Seeing it flee in panic, Huo Linfei didn't pursue it. By now, he had a rough estimate of his current fighting strength.

He could fight Soul Beasts under fifteen years old without much trouble. Killing one would be a different matter.

Director Su watched, his expression shifting through a bewildering array of emotions.

I've found a treasure.

Just then, Director Su's expression changed sharply, and three Soul Rings appeared in an instant.

One white, two yellow.

He sprang to Huo Linfei's side. Azure Soul Power surged over his fist, and he drove it forward!

Only then did Huo Linfei see the enormous red python that had somehow appeared beside him!

Director Su's fist struck the giant python squarely on the head!

Bang!

Hiss!

The blow slammed the python's head into the ground with a thunderous crash and a pained shriek!!

"Third Soul Skill: Giant Rhinoceros Shakes the Earth!"

With a low shout, Director Su activated his Soul Skill and pressed his attack on the giant python.

He stamped a foot and launched himself into the air. Azure light blazed around him as he charged into the python!

Bang!

Another tremendous crash sent dust billowing up!

When the dust cleared, Huo Linfei saw that the ground beneath the python had caved in. Its body was covered in wounds, and it lay limp and listless. To say it was on its last breath would be no exaggeration.

Director Su returned to Huo Linfei's side and let out a small breath of relief. "That was close. Luckily, this Fire-Patterned Python has only just reached a thousand years, and it was already injured. Otherwise, even I would've had trouble with it. What a shame. This Soul Beast would suit you quite well, but it's far too old."

No sooner had Director Su said this than his brow furrowed again, and his three Soul Rings reappeared.

Not far away, an earthy-yellow python, even larger than the Fire-Patterned Python, slithered out of the dense forest.

"That's a Yellow Mountain Python over two thousand years old. Stay here and don't move. I'll drive it away. It's probably here for the Fire-Patterned Python, but from the look of it, it doesn't intend to let us go either."

With that, Director Su went to meet the Yellow Mountain Python. Huo Linfei had no Soul Ring or Soul Skill and couldn't help in a battle at this level, so he obediently stayed where he was.

Still, watching the battle could teach Huo Linfei quite a lot.

Just as he became absorbed in it, a sudden sense of danger struck him like a flash of insight, making his scalp prickle. He turned, and his eyes met those of the Fire-Patterned Python from earlier...

Holy shit. Even Soul Beasts pull sneak attacks...
