"Sect Master Yu, what brings you here today?"
Bibi Dong decided to go through the motions first.
She would pretend she knew nothing about Yu Xiaogang.
After all, it would hardly be strange if she did not know what had happened to him.
How could news from a little place like Nuoding City possibly reach the Pope of Spirit Hall?
It would be stranger if it had reached her.
If Huisinuo had not once served as a bishop, with the right to offer her counsel, she might truly have known nothing about Xiaogang.
Yu Yuanzhen clearly knew Spirit Hall's rules as well. Otherwise, he could not have chosen this moment to come.
"Your Holiness, I have come chiefly on account of my son Xiaogang.
"You may not yet have heard that, a few days ago, my son Yu Xiaogang was injured by a deacon of your Spirit Hall in Nuoding City.
"I came today to seek justice for my son."
Yu Yuanzhen sighed and shook his head helplessly, looking every inch a father worried over his injured son.
"I was unaware of this."
Yu Yuanzhen's eyes lit up. "Alas, my poor son is around forty now, yet he still cannot advance beyond Soul Elder."
"And now he has been beaten so badly that he lies at death's door. As his father, I can only feel grief and helplessness."
Reading a report was one thing. Hearing it with her own ears was another.
The sight of her would-be father-in-law, haggard with worry for Xiaogang, struck Bibi Dong to the heart.
She could barely sit still.
"Sect Master Yu, rest assured, Xiaogang will be all right. Spirit Hall was at fault in this matter."
"I will personally bring an apology to your residence. I hope this will not affect the friendly relations between the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect and Spirit Hall."
Bibi Dong spoke a little too quickly.
She had to admit she was panicking.
She was even willing to sacrifice Spirit Hall's authority if it meant she could see Yu Xiaogang's condition for herself.
For a moment, Bibi Dong almost fell under an illusion.
She was only Bibi Dong, an ordinary young woman.
The man before her was her future father-in-law, talking about her husband Yu Xiaogang's injuries.
She was not the Pope of Spirit Hall discussing humanitarian compensation with the sect master of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect.
Seeing Bibi Dong drift into a daze, Yu Yuanzhen waved a hand, trying to bring her back to herself.
"Your Holiness, what is wrong?"
"Nothing. I just remembered something from the past." Bibi Dong shook her head, a trace of sorrow and helplessness in her eyes.
She knew that she and Yu Xiaogang could never be together now.
All she could be was the Pope of Spirit Hall.
The empress who would one day unite the whole of Douluo Continent.
It was precisely that clear knowledge that made her despair all the more.
If she could choose, she would rather have been someone of ordinary talent.
Perhaps then she and Yu Xiaogang could have stayed together for the rest of their lives.
Damn Qian Xunji!
Damn Spirit Hall!
Damn the Angel Clan!
Bibi Dong was heartbroken, but none of it showed on her face.
She continued to trade words with Yu Yuanzhen.
"Then it is settled. Tomorrow, I will bring the gifts to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect."
Yu Yuanzhen knew when to stop. After all, compensation had never been his sole purpose.
He had come to test Spirit Hall's attitude.
He had not expected Spirit Hall to be so accommodating.
To Yu Yuanzhen, it even seemed a little weak.
Perhaps he could use this news to build ties with the other sects. If they joined forces, why should they fear they could not stand against Spirit Hall?
Only by toppling Spirit Hall could Douluo Continent have a bright future.
Spirit Hall was evil to its very bones!
It had thrown all of Douluo Continent into a foul, choking haze!
It was a blight on the Soul Master World.
Yu Yuanzhen left Spirit Hall in high spirits.
Bibi Dong slumped on the papal throne, her eyes vacant. The papal crown sat slightly askew because of her posture.
Far away in the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect, Yu Xiaogang knew nothing of the exchange at Spirit Hall.
At that moment, he was sitting in a wooden wheelchair while several maids pushed him outside for some air.
"I want to go back. I'm a patient. You can't treat me like this."
Yu Xiaogang's backside had been beaten raw too. Sitting in the wheelchair was agony, especially since its wooden frame offered little cushioning.
The cobblestone path made for a rough ride.
With every jolt, the wounds on Yu Xiaogang's backside slammed against the hard wheelchair.
The pain left his face pale and sweat pouring down his forehead.
"Stop! I told you to stop pushing!"
"I'll kill you! I'll kill you all!"
Yu Xiaogang roared, panting like an ox.
Unfortunately for him, his threats did nothing.
"Young master, everything we're doing has Sect Master Yu's approval."
"Sect Master Yu told us to bring you out at this hour for some fresh air."
The maid in charge stepped forward to explain.
"We wouldn't dare disobey Sect Master Yu's orders."
"I'm your master. You're supposed to serve me."
The wheelchair stopped, giving Yu Xiaogang a chance to catch his breath.
"Now I order you to push me back inside, then leave at once."
"Now! At once! Move!"
"Understood, young master. The rest of you, stand aside. I'll handle this."
The maid in charge took hold of Yu Xiaogang's wheelchair.
She suddenly picked up speed. The wheels spun furiously, and the chair jolted just as fast.
Yu Xiaogang's vision went white. He could no longer feel his backside.
A moment later, the wheelchair came to a steady stop beside the bed.
Yu Xiaogang felt a warm stream beneath him. Yellow liquid mixed with red ran down the edge of the wheelchair.
He sprawled back in the chair, eyes rolled up, looking as though he had been utterly broken.
The maid remained unruffled and methodically cleaned up the mess beneath him.
As she worked, she smiled and said, "Young master, do you remember when we first met?"
"We seemed to be about the same age then."
"We trained together and spent every day together until we grew up."
"But you were the young master, and I was only a maid. I could never overstep my place."
"But later, from the day you demanded that I sleep beside you, everything changed.
"For me, the sky was never bright again, and the sunlight was never warm."
At that, the maid leaned close to Yu Xiaogang's ear.
"Do you remember? That night, you pulled me into the Secret Room."
"It was so dark inside. There wasn't a sliver of light, and I couldn't see a thing. If I hadn't recognized your scent,
"I might not even have known it was you, young master!"
Yu Xiaogang slowly regained his senses. "You're only a maid, while I'm the son of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect's sect master."
"Of course I know I'm not worthy. I'm only a maid, only a commoner. How could there ever be feelings between me and a noble young master?"
"Good. Then hurry up and change my clothes!" Yu Xiaogang assumed his old air as Grandmaster and barked the order.
"Yu Xiaogang! How heartless you are!"
The maid spoke bitterly, then, as though resigned to her fate, changed Yu Xiaogang into fresh clothes and put him back in bed.
"Don't tell anyone what just happened," Yu Xiaogang warned with his eyes closed.
The maid's wounded expression suddenly twisted into a sickly, teasing smile. Red flushed her cheeks, and she gazed at Yu Xiaogang through hazy eyes as she whispered,
"Xiaogang, don't worry. I won't tell anyone about pulling you into the Secret Room. That's a secret just for the two of us..."
