Tang Wulin and Huo Yuhao exchanged a glance. They hadn't expected to be the first ones up.
Still, with their strength, going first gave them no cause for concern. They quickly entered the arena and took their places in the northwest corner.
The other team looked at the two of them with delight, clearly believing they'd found a soft persimmon to squeeze, and eagerly headed to the southeast corner.
"How long do you two think Wulin will take to finish off his opponents?"
Mu En watched the figures in Area Thirteen, an amused look on his face.
Whether it was Huo Yuhao or Tang Wulin, their strength put them in an entirely different dimension from their peers. Losing was out of the question; the only question was how long they would take to finish the other team off.
"Ten seconds."
Niu Tian thought it over and gave his answer.
He wasn't quite sure how this so-called assessment worked, so he gave a fairly generous estimate.
"Come on, big brother, you're underestimating Wulin."
"Three seconds!"
Tai Tan slapped his elder brother's shoulder in protest and offered a much shorter time.
"Then I'll take something in the middle. Five seconds."
Mu En smiled as he gave his estimate. They were just passing the time, with nothing at stake, so it hardly mattered.
"Let's keep watching, then."
Niu Tian folded his arms across his chest and spoke in a low voice, his gaze turning toward Tang Wulin.
The three students from Freshman Class Three had the standard lineup of two boys and one girl. One was tall and burly, one looked too frail to withstand a breeze, and the last was rather good-looking.
Seeing both sides in position, the teacher nodded and announced, "Begin the assessment."
Both sides immediately released their Martial Souls.
Light flashed in Huo Yuhao's eyes. In the blink of an eye, the girl at the rear let out a muffled groan and collapsed heavily.
But before the referee could get behind her and pull her out of the arena, the two boys on the other side had already flown out of the designated area.
Tang Wulin had used teleportation outright, delivering two kicks in succession within a single second. Before either boy could react, a heavy blow struck his stomach, sending him flying with an immense force.
"Holy shit!"
The teacher couldn't help swearing. His Soul Rings flashed, and three werewolves appeared in the arena, trying to catch the three students.
But he was still a step too late. Although Tang Wulin had held back, he'd used just a little more force to avoid getting hurt through carelessness. Before the teacher could catch them, the two boys had already flown into another area and landed heavily in the middle of its arena.
Area Eleven.
The two teams currently fighting, along with the other teams in that area, stared blankly at the two people falling from the sky and the teacher following behind them.
"Pause the match!"
Area Eleven's referee quickly stopped the match and hurried over to examine their injuries.
"What happened?"
"They got taken out in one hit. It looked like teleportation."
Area Thirteen's teacher wore a bitter expression. Who could have imagined those two youngsters were so strong?
"Ahem. It's nothing serious. They'll be fine after some healing."
Area Eleven's teacher said no more, merely patting the other teacher's shoulder in consolation.
The teacher responsible for healing soon arrived to treat the two injured students. The teams in Area Eleven resumed their matches distractedly, with some even craning their necks to try to see what was happening in Area Thirteen.
"Tang Wulin's team wins."
Area Thirteen's teacher looked at the pair with a complicated expression. One had incomparably powerful spiritual power, while the other teleported and took people out instantly. They were both freaks.
The teams in Area Thirteen had long since fallen utterly silent. They'd thought this two-person team consisted of weak leftovers from their class. Who could have guessed they'd formed a pair because they were too strong?
Some were utterly dispirited, while others brimmed with determination.
"Hahaha, looks like we all lost."
Mu En chuckled. That team was already above average among the freshmen, with all three members being Two-Ring Soul Grandmasters. Unfortunately, they'd run into Tang Wulin and Huo Yuhao and could only bow out in the first round.
"Not bad, not bad."
Tai Tan nodded in satisfaction. He didn't care how much Tang Wulin had eaten to gain his current strength. Why didn't other people eat those things? Did they not want that strength?
Bloodlines were one of the most rigidly stratified things on the Douluo Continent, and this was even more true for soul beasts. The gulf in strength between a dark gold terrorclaw bear and a stalk of blue silver grass of the same age was as vast as the distance between heaven and earth.
Humans already had it relatively good. Their bloodlines manifested only as Martial Souls, which could still mutate. Even the children of gods would be willing to compete on the same stage as the children of ordinary commoner Soul Masters.
As for soul beasts, the Emperor Auspicious Beast's attitude was, Your brain marrow should taste pretty good. Don't run away.
"Yeah!"
Tang Wulin and Huo Yuhao high-fived in celebration. They certainly didn't think a crushing victory like this was nothing to celebrate. A win deserved some wholehearted joy!
Their assessment for the day was over, but today was merely an opportunity to get used to this combat-based assessment format. Tomorrow would bring two rounds each in the morning and afternoon. The third day would be even more grueling, with five matches for every team.
This tested not only the students' practical combat skills, but also their ability to sustain prolonged fighting.
Tang Wulin and Huo Yuhao went back to continue cultivating, but tales of their exploits began spreading among the students.
Huo Yuhao had still kept something in reserve, hiding both their Soul Rings when he used Soul Shock.
Of course, some might suspect Tang Wulin had a Soul Bone, but Huo Yuhao knew those two men protected Tang Wulin almost constantly. There was no danger whatsoever.
Still, he'd discussed all this with Tang Wulin before putting it into practice. After all, he wanted to shatter his own inner demon with his own hands, but wasn't sure he could defeat those two people's Hell White Tiger alone. That was why he'd begun concealing information now.
Thus, although everyone knew there were two such monsters, no one knew how to deal with them.
After all, most of them were only one- or two-ring Soul Masters. At that stage, spiritual power scarcely entered the picture. As for teleportation, there was even less they could do about it. They could only endure the blows with their bodies.
According to one rumor, however, a certain boy surnamed Dai declared that the boy named Tang Wulin was nothing but trash who relied on sneak attacks. His physique surely couldn't compare to Dai's own.
That very night, a certain boy surnamed Dai had a sack thrown over his head and was savagely beaten. Then he was healed and savagely beaten again, over and over.
Although he'd slept poorly, the healing left him brimming with energy. He even gained a blessing from the misfortune and advanced by one level, leaving some people silently cursing their rotten luck.
The battles on the second day were just as easily settled.
Since Huo Yuhao wanted to conceal his strength, he used Soul Shock to take out one opponent each time, and Tang Wulin then sent the other two flying with two sharp kicks.
All this was so that, when the day came, Cui Yajie would face Tang Wulin, the golden Dayun truck, while preparing to counter Huo Yuhao's attack, and Dai Huabin and his teammate would face Huo Yuhao's ultimate ice while waiting for Tang Wulin.
The third day's matches began.
Thanks to some behind-the-scenes manipulation, Wang Dong's team and Tang Wulin's team didn't meet. Instead, Tang Wulin's team faced Huang Chutian's team.
"Tang Wulin, Huo Yuhao. We look forward to learning from you."
Tang Wulin spoke politely.
"Huang Chutian. On my left is Lan Susu, and on my right is Lan Luoluo."
Huang Chutian's gaze was grave. Clearly, he knew about the pair.
"I remember you have a Martial Soul Fusion Skill?"
Tang Wulin looked at the twins, sounding somewhat uncertain.
Every day after returning, Wang Yan compiled information about some of the stronger teams for their class. This team had been included.
"That's right!"
Lan Susu and Lan Luoluo exchanged a glance and answered in unison.
"Please use your Martial Soul Fusion Skill. I haven't seen anyone else's Martial Soul Fusion Skill yet."
Tang Wulin spoke eagerly, but his words stirred towering waves in everyone's hearts.
Before you continue
